Again for NY take home 400k you're doing well but take home 400k is different from 400k BEFORE TAXES
Those are two VERY different economic earning classes in NYC ....
That dynamic is not gonna be the same in some flyover city like Nashville or Arlington - but in LA or SF or DC you earning 400k is no where near like taking HOME 400k

1. You will need a nice home in a good community
2. Wife will not want to work.
3. Kids will need good schools
4. Kids AND wife will want fly shit.
5. You wil want fly shit.
All that will have you living pay check to pay check.
Private school is like 20k a year and up.

Wives purses cost 5k minimum!!

And again earning 400k and taking HOME 400K are two DIFFERENT things
You earn 400K you mite take HOME 200k which in NYC is not a lot of cash if you live and run in middle class circles- not that great but not that bad
You can take home 200k for a family and live as i said -
but a divorce will crush you with just ONE kid ( your child support will be about 30k for two at that income.level you're losing about 40k ) if you have a ok apt at 2000 a month that 24 k - a car costs a lot plus expenses to.keep it - and God help.you if you trying to save for retirement or college for you kids becuase all that is about 40k min ( a 401k would allow you to offset max about 25k )
So off just taking home that 200k you already down almost a 100k and thats before you get into regular shit expenses for yourself and your kids
If you're CLEARING 400K you are earning way more than that 400k and your circle and strata of ppl are completely and totally on another scale

They own several brownstones as well as other real estate, plus both use to work for the board of Ed making 6 figs b4 they decided to retire. They lived in a brownstone since early 90s. My older cousin aka her son always went to public school even though they could afford private for him. My aunt and husband never owned a car that cost more than 35,000 dollars, my cousin never owned a whip that cost 40,000. My older cousin brought a brownstone himself and had it for over a decade b4 he sold it for more than 2 and a half million dollars. Then he brought other rental property. He also worked for the feds making 6 figs a yr. His bank account got 6 zeros plus another number in the beginning. His mother account is even larger. He owns property in multiple states and has 2 kids and guess what they both in public school. Why cause there’s a bunch of public schools with great programs if you do your research. In fact there’s public schools that’s connected to all kinds of fields like medical , engineering, etc that put you into programs if your grades are good that connect you to great colleges, certain careers, open doors for you life after highschool. If you actually grew up in the 5 borough’s you would know all about this but you didn’t. You really think every millionaire owns a 6 fig car or splurge on dumbshit, no some actually don’t. Well.the discussion is about a family being middle class if they earn 400k in NYC ( or a city similar ) and decidedly a family can earn 400k and yet be very much middle class if they live in NYC ...
In Tennessee or Iowa or Ohio or Montana or Arizona or Misissippi and places like them a family earning 400k is def upper middle class ..but in NYC or SF a family earning that amount of money is mid and it will be mid becuase the cost of living in NY SF DC and the like is pretty high - and someone earning 400k is going to do or want to do the shit that someone of means would want to do ...so living here its not a cake walk but its not a chore ...
Earning 400k is not the same as taking home 400k ....guys seem to confuse or conflate the two - they aren't. If you earn 400k you still have to es and life expenses and shit so your 400k will be more like 80 or maybe even a 100k
If you're clearing 400k after taxes then you are living pretty well in NYC becuase you're income is way above a person just EARNING 400K
