The Story of Two Kids on Ice

One chilly winter afternoon, two best friends were playing on a frozen pond near their neighborhood park. The ice was smooth, and they were having a great time sliding around. Suddenly, the ice beneath one of the boys cracked, and he plunged into the freezing water.

The strong current beneath the ice began pulling the boy away from the hole. He was trapped and flailing in the icy water. His friend panicked but quickly realized there was no one nearby to help. He had to act fast.

Looking around, he spotted a large tree at the edge of the pond. Without hesitation, he ran to the tree, grabbed a thick branch, and, summoning all his strength, broke it off. Racing back to the pond, he used the branch like a tool, ramming it against the ice with all his might.

The ice was incredibly thick. He didn’t stop. He pounded the branch against the ice, going around in a circle to widen the hole. His hands were freezing, his body was exhausted, but he refused to give up. After what felt like an eternity, the ice finally gave way, and he managed to pull his friend out of the icy water.

When the paramedics finally arrived, they assessed the situation. The boy who had fallen into the water was alive, saved just in time. But as they looked around at the thick ice and the scrawny boy holding the broken branch, they were baffled.

“How did he do this?” one paramedic said aloud. “It’s impossible. Look at how thick this ice is!” Another paramedic began hitting the ice with their own tools, creating loud thumping sounds as they tested its thickness. “This ice is so solid—how did he break through it?”

The team examined the circle the boy had beaten into the ice with the branch and shook their heads in disbelief. “It’s a miracle he managed to do this,” one of them murmured. “He saved his friend’s life, but this… this should have been impossible.”

As they spoke, an old man who had been watching the scene stepped forward. He had been quietly listening to their astonishment. With a calm voice and a knowing smile, he said:

“I can tell you how he did it.... He didn’t have anybody here to tell him he couldn’t do it.”
