Twenty-eight years since “Clerks” redefined the buddy comedy in 1994, Kevin Smith is finally finishing out his trilogy.
The trailer for “Clerks 3” officially debuted ahead of a special two-night only theatrical run thanks to Fathom Events and Lionsgate. The third film will premiere September 13 and 15 in more than 700 U.S. movie theaters at 7 p.m. local time both nights with an exclusive look behind the scenes with director Smith and the cast. Smith will also take the latest installment of the franchise on a “Clerks III Convenience Tour” roadshow throughout September and October, starting in New Jersey on September 4.
“Clerks 3” picks up with Randal (Jeff Anderson) reconsidering his life’s purpose after surviving a heart attack. Randal sets out to make a movie about his life working at the Quick Stop convenience store, and auditions a slew of actors ranging from Ben Affleck to Fred Armisen and Sarah Michelle Gellar to star in the meta-comedy. Of course, Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) will also be making cameos.

“Jay and Silent Bob are like C-3PO and R2-D2,” Randal tells Dante (Brian O’Halloran). “They’ve been here since the first movie which is the last time they were cool, but they’ve been with the franchise so long, they still give them cameos and put them on the lunch boxes.”
Trevor Fehrman, Rosario Dawson, Michelle Buteau, and Justin Long also star in the ensemble comedy.
“‘Clerks III’ is the definition of event cinema, especially if you are a Kevin Smith fan or a maven of independent cinema,” Eda Kowan, Lionsgate’s EVP of Acquisitions & Co-Productions, said. “This film rounds out the story that started a revolution in filmmaking. And to bring it to the fans on the big screen, there is no greater partner in the world of event cinema than Fathom Events.”
Smith famously shut down the idea of kickstarting the financing for “Clerks III” following payment and rights disputes with The Weinstein Company. The writer-director added that the initial script for the third installment was 137 pages long and the “Empire Strikes Back” of the franchise. In 2019, Smith held a live benefit reading for his shelved script. The film was acquired by Lionsgate in 2021 and filmed that summer.
“In the story this time, I give Randal the heart attack that almost killed me,” Smith said on Instagram, referring to his own near-fatal heart attack. “But rather than succumb to the reality of middle age, Randal rages against the dying light by telling the story of his life in an indie film he shoots with his fellow clerks at Quick Stop! 27 years ago, I made a movie about Dante and Randal that made my dreams come true and changed my life — so now I get to return the favor!”
“Clerks III” premieres in theaters September 13 and 15.

Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes have a Clerks reunion at Ben Affleck's wedding to Jennifer Lopez

Jay and Silent Bob looked spiffy at Bennifer's wedding ceremony.
By Jessica WangAugust 21, 2022 at 03:23 PM EDT

Jay and Silent Bob got all dressed up to celebrate a special event.
Clerks stars Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes reunited at costar Ben Affleck's wedding to Jennifer Lopez in Georgia on Saturday. Smith donned a more formal version of his signature look (backwards baseball cap and shorts) to adhere to the all-white color scheme alongside his spiffy costar and their respective wives, per an Instagram photo Smith shared from the festivities.
A month after the two made it official in a "super small" Las Vegas wedding last month, Affleck and Lopez threw a lavish bash for friends and family on the grounds of Affleck's estate in Georgia.

Smith and the couple go way back: The filmmaker directed Affleck and Lopez in the 2004 rom-com Jersey Girl. Last year, Smith even maintained that he's actually the mastermind behind the Bennifer moniker. "'Bennifer' is trending," Smith tweeted. "It's a name I first gave the kids during Jersey Girl pre-production, before the world found out they were dating. I'd later drop the name in an interview with the @nytimes. Shortly thereafter, it appeared in the article and then entered the vernacular."

Affleck has appeared in many of Smith's films, including his directorial debut Clerks, in which he also starred as the Silent Bob to Mewes' Jay. Affleck's various roles in the View Askewniverse span Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, and the upcoming Clerks III.

Out Sept. 13, Clerks III will follow Smith's return to the Quick Stop convenience store for a sequel inspired by the heart attack he suffered in 2018. After video store clerk Randal (Jeff Anderson) suffers a massive heart attack, "he laments that he's wasted his life watching movies and never thought about making one himself," Smith teased to EW last month.
Randal and Dante (Brian O'Halloran) then decide to make their own version of Clerks, "a black-and-white movie called Inconvenience," Smith said, describing the sequel as "incredibly meta." The cast includes Mewes, Trevor Fehrman, Rosario Dawson, and Affleck. Smith remained tightlipped about his longtime collaborator's role in the film.
"In order to keep the integrity of the original universe together, there was no real place to put a zillion cameos," Smith said. "However, Dante and Randal at one point try to cast the movie, and that's where I called up every famous person I knew and had them do a line. So yes, you do see Ben Affleck in Clerks III, just not at the Quick Stop."

Rosario Dawson got unexpectedly emotional at the Clerks III premiere

"Crying at the premiere was not my expectation," says actress, "but there I was."
By Clark CollisSeptember 07, 2022 at 03:05 PM EDT

Rosario Dawson had read the script for Clerks III, and then reprised her role of Becky under the guidance of writer-director Kevin Smith for the film shoot in New Jersey — but the actress admits she was still taken aback by the emotions she felt when watching the comedy threequel at the movie's premiere last month.
"Crying at the premiere was not my expectation, but there I was," says the actress. "I hadn't seen it yet, so it was my first time watching it, and it's always nerve-racking to watch the film on the day, in the room, but it was just really beautiful and powerful and joyous and funny and just really great. It was great to be back with these characters again and see them evolve or not, you know, over the years."

In the film, Jeff Anderson's wise-cracking convenience store co-owner Randal suffers a heart attack and sets about making a Clerks-style film about his life. The script for Clerks III was directly inspired by the 'widow-maker' cardiac event Smith suffered in 2018.
"I wanted to tell my heart attack story with my characters," the filmmaker told EW earlier this year. "So Randal, the video-store guy, has a massive heart attack. While he recovers, he laments that he's wasted his life watching movies and never thought about making one himself. Randal and Dante (Brian O'Halloran) essentially make their own version of Clerks, a black-and-white movie called Inconvenience. It's incredibly meta."

"I was thinking about how he's really taking us along on the journey with him," says Dawson of Smith. "When we filmed Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, it was a year after his widow-maker heart attack. And so, we've all been really aware of that and, [him] going vegan and losing all this weight and working with his daughter (Harley Quinn Smith) and all of this. It was not surprising to see him bring that storyline to these characters, and bring them along on the journey as well, because it just adds such a layer. I think these characters have earned getting there. It's just a perfect encapsulation of both of those films, and the journey along the way, and the transition that comes with life if you're lucky enough to live it."
Clerks III will play in select cinemas Sept. 13-18. Smith will tour with the film in select markets in September and October.
