The Return

PRAISE: I think it's been about 15 years since I've readHomer’s epic poem The Odyssey. Even cutting out the mythology from the story, the movie is strong where it counts: The performances and the build to a reveal and the outcome of that revelation. Ralph Fiennes as Odysseus
Juliette Binoche as Penelope are excellent in their roles displaying weariness, strength and longing. The movie is beautifully filmed as landscapes and vistas are displayed in a grand way. The tension is well developed and even seeps into the lane of suspense for me even though knowing what's to come. I liked the way characters would dwell on the situations they were in and try to slyly come up with solutions. I was waiting for characters to meet their comeuppance, realizations and their fates and it all happens in a bloody and satisfying way.

PROBLEMS: The movie can be very ponderous at times with long drifting moments in which nothing really happens which made me start saying when are we going to get to the good stuff. Some characters were stuck on repeat delivering the same lines and goals.

Last Breath

Based on a true story that seems a lot like a documentary. Cool movie. It's not much to it, gives the bare minimum background to get some sort of character development and make you know who is who and get invested in the people some and it puts you right in the water. The movie is short. It's about an hour and twenty so it's not a lot of filler.

Mickey 17

I don't know what I feel about this movie. I wouldn't recommend it, but I was entertained. It kept me awake despite me looking at my watch a couple of times. It really could have been about 15 minutes shorter. I'm leaning towards not liking the third act.

I didn't understand Nasha (Naomi Ackie) at all. I was annoyed she was black. So you pick some sort of relationship with a dude, who isn't really going to be the same. Trying not to spoil anything, but black woman couldn't get another "man"?

The rollie pollie elephants were sort of cool. Steven Yeun wasn't used enough. This is the second movie where Mark Ruffalo annoys me. Maybe I would have liked it more if Trump wasn't in office right now. Mark Ruffalo really took me out of it to the point I was annoyed.

4.5/10

I watched this last night at home with my sons while eating dinner on MAX.

Not much to say, the premise has been done a zillion times since the 1950s. The film is basically a revision of HG Wells classic “War of the Worlds”.

The suspense is ok, nothing surprising or unexpected. VFX/SFX of the creatures is nothing fabulous.

For the Thirsty, Morena Baccarin co-stars and she looks like shit thru the movie. She isn’t glammed up like you are used to, but she is still attractive in a natural way. You will get an idea of what she looks like when she gets up in the morning after furiously Fuckin’ her the night before. HaHa!!!

One thing I noticed with Morena, the scenes where she was with Anthony Mackie, had me thinking she would be a perfect “Black Queen” of the Hellfire Club in the MCU, unfortunately she is already cast in the “Deadpool” films.

Overall, it’s a entertaining film to watch to get your mind off of what is going on in the real world.

There is a mid-credit scene that sets it up for a potential sequel.

Synopsis

Post-apocalyptic survivors find refuge in the Rocky Mountains to hide from giant, insect-like creatures that can't live above 8,000 feet. However, when one of them needs life-saving supplies, they risk it all to venture into the danger zone.

Pandemic
2016

4.5/10

I watched this tonight on the road on tubi. I stumbled upon a couple of months ago searching thru tubi while looking for something not relevant.

It is an action/horror film based around a viral outbreak causing people to turn rabid in various stages. What caught my attention was the preview tubi has for the film.

The movie is filmed in a “First Person” POV of using the cameras mounted on the characters Biohazard headgear. This gives the film a unique perspective and makes it stand out from other films in the genre.

It’s a B-Movie, but it plays out well. VFX/SFX are ok and the film does the “Less Is More” with it. The blood/gore is done well for a low budget film in some scenes. The film has a “28 Days Later” vibe, but it goes a different route. Action is just good enough to keep your eyes glued to the screen. Very little suspense through out the film.

The film is full of familiar B and D-List actors from well known film/TV shows.

Overall, it’s just a mindless entertaining film to watch.

Synopsis

After a devastating virus outbreak, the world is plunged into a state of chaos. Zombies roam the streets, while survivors fight to stay alive. With the human race under threat, an armed rescue team target the undead.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
2012

7.5/10

I watched this one tonight on the road on MAX. It’s a slow burn romance drama, low with the romance, heavy with the drama.

If you don’t already know, I have been going thru my future ex-wife, Melanie Lynskey’s film/TV catalog. It’s why I watched this.

The film mainly plays out as a “Coming of Age Drama”. The main character has some issues and it’s hinted at midway thru the film, and somewhat revealed towards the end. The main issue with the main character has to do with Melanie Lynskey’s character who plays his Aunt. I’m not gonna spoil it, but it was a surprise. Also Melanie is barely in the film.

Overall, it’s an interesting film. It’s not for everyone, but if you looking for something to watch with your girl, this should do.

Synopsis

Shy freshman Charlie is befriended by two outgoing senior students, who teach him about first love and friendship. However, as his friends prepare for college, Charlie must confront his troubled past.

@playahaitian

- With your LifeHack article from Variety ... noticed the SXSW mention.

One of the best things I like about the movie / entertainment podcasts is all the coverage in the months ahead for various film fests. Be it SXSW, Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, etc.

The media / critics will tell you which movies to keep an eye out for. Which ones may be eventual award winners. It's cool hearing the early hype over the years for the likes of Parasite, Anora, The Brutalist, etc.

I'm tempted to go to the Vancouver Film Fest again in the future. Went to the one in the fall of 2007 (got a pass for the festival as a birthday gift months prior). The weather was perfect as it was rainy and cool that fall season, so didn't mind being indoors. Went to about 20 movies in 2 weeks, and they were fine with people bringing food and drink from home. Plus, with all the movie buffs there people were very quiet with their snacks. People had saran wrap and Ziplocs for their stuff, instead of crinkly packaging, haha. Got lucky too as all my movies were at one now-defunct older multiplex in downtown Vancity. It had 7 - 8 screens, so I tried to time my showings so that you could walk from one to another with NO downtime. Or if you weren't feeling a movie, you could quietly exit early and go see something else that was starting soon thereafter. Sit near the back so that you aren't bothering too many people. Easy to exit (exits were at the back).
