Well deserved, excellent writing, excellent direction, excellent acting.
Agreed. Organized chaos with competent professionals doing their best under pressure.

I may be going a little overboard but...

Could shows like this actually build trust in the medical industry again?

I never under estimate the power and influence of shows like this on the overall society viewpoints.

Possibly.

I'll say this ... like alot of fields of work, there's plenty of good people in health care and medicine. People who have devoted their careers to helping others, often in highly stressful environments.

I was just reading about one of my friends from junior high. She was a year older and took me under her wing like a little bro, and introduced me to plenty of older kids back in the 90s. She's been in nursing for approx' 25 years now. Worked on a spinal cord unit, followed by 18 years in the ER and now heavily involved with acute care & home nursing. Salt of the earth person.

I've been in the health care field for just over 20 years, and next month will mark 21 years with my current organization. I've never worked in hospitals, but I've got all the respect in the world for all hospital staffing putting in long hours. I've done frontline work on the Downtown Eastside and in shelters, and I knew it would come at a cost given how trying it was. Definitely thankful to be in a more structured environment that runs more smoothly, as the majority of my peers have 15 - 35 years experience themselves.

Sadly we don't get enough of those stories highlighted. I got more than a few.

In the age we live in now and to be honest have always lived in

A good movie or TV show can have much more worldwide impact than a true life interaction

We have fact that top gun made people join the air force, star trek inspired scientists, ER inspired nurses, a different world increased black college applications etc etc

I wonder in a world that has mistrust for everything maybe shows like this can inspire change?

I could be bugging.

It's a good, optimistic mindset, Playa.

I remember back in elementary school there was that program wherein (many schools had this) ... parents would come in and talk to the class about their jobs / occupations. I.E. - how they got into that field / what they liked about it, and basically would open up the room for people to ask questions.

Seeing as most kids gave your standard answer about wanting to be a doctor, lawyer, dentist, pro athlete, famous musician, lol.

Then in junior high there was a really effective program called CAPP. Meaning - Career and Personal Planning. And they'd walk you through the pros and cons of certain occupations. Stuff you might not have thought about. OTHER occupations you might lean towards pursuing. Essentially trying to map out WHAT you might be more apt to pursue in college or university to avoid wasting your time in programs that might not be for you.

The people they brought in really helped you understand your own strengths and weaknesses better. I remember quietly thinking to myself - "This is really helpful" when they broke things down clearly.

- Are you strong in math and science?

- Do you work better in larger or smaller settings?

- Are you mechanically inclined?

- Do you see yourself wanting to travel frequently for your job, or not at all?

- Are you a leader by nature?

- Are you good in public speaking, or managing a workplace? Or do you prefer to be amongst the team?

* Shitload of questions like that ...

I agree with @Helico-pterFunk as well. I've worked in healthcare pretty much 20+ years and the folks from all aspect of the industry truely do care about people and want the best for their patients (both clinical and administrative side)....If you are the type of person who enjoys helping others, it's the best career field to get into IMO....I'm in healthcare policy right now and everyday I am working with organizations across the country to help guide them on how to improve the quality of healthcare to their patients....

It's an industry that can always be better when we can all agree that improving quality of care should be the #1 priority.

On a sidenote: I would like to see a show that shows the administrative side of healthcare.....Every hospitals has a organizational structure with a CEO, COO, VPs, and etc.....That's an entirely different world and those folks have to deal with other stressors that's unique from what the clinical staff (MDs, Nurses, Lab Techs, and etc.) are dealing with on a day to day basis....

Ben Carson inspired me to go into the healthcare field....Reading his book, Gifted Hands, in elementary school drove to the industry.....

I was in a program called the Medical Explorers Program in middle and high school where we had folks talk to us about different careers in the healthcare industry....The program was sponsored via AHEC which has offices all across the country....https://www.nationalahec.org/

We would take trips to the local Medical School, talks to current medical students, and even do paid internships at the local hospital.....
We need more programs like this so our kids can know about the various options in the healthcare field esp. seeing someone that looks like them that's a MD, Nurse, Physician Assistant, or etc....

When I was a mentor, I was responsible for heatlhcare initiatives with our mentees and I did a lot of work around bringing in MDs and other clinical folks that work in the industry to talk to our kids about career options and what's required after high school....Programming like this works...

Scary how good this show is. Was super pissed the way the last episode ended. I wanted it to keep going lol. Cant remember a show whose second half of the season that was as good as this

Agreed. I think with the larger number of episodes for the season it has allowed for more character traits / development. So despite it just being in one workplace setting, you know the personalities of the people. Seeing how they work under pressure and the more serious storylines in recent eps.

Well crafted.

Thanks for the intel re: Medical Explorers Program, etc. That sounds great.

I got into the health care field via my mom. She was an RN and RPN. She encouraged me to volunteer at a group home as she knew the nurse manager. Encouraged me to get into the mental health field, as I was spinning my wheels in college. Initial goal was to be in sports sciences and kinesiology. Did a number of those courses for a few years before branching off to psych and sociology, and did pretty well there. Having those credits helped me get a foot in the door with volunteer and oncall work. Then later completed program and got steadier work.

Your both perfect examples of the type of inspirations I'm talking about. We are blessed to have you both in the field in any capacity.

My original thought was that good shows like this could rebuild the trust that has been lost. People don't trust and borderline hate these insurance companies and hospitals and doctors and scientists.

We can't continue down that path any longer.

Is there any real solution?

Thanks Playa.

The organization I work for is grass roots from back in the day. That was part of the appeal for me. Knowing it was good, honest work. Improving the stability of peoples’ long-term health and in turn maintaining minimal turnover of regular staffing.

I have worked for some other orgs and locations and knew they were not conducive to long-term employment.

I.E. staffing stealing money and drugs / medication from clients. Reselling same. Sleeping with clients. Heavy staff turnover and burnout.

That just wasn’t it, mayne.

Give me a company that’s accredited and highly regarded.

Re: insurance companies and such. Don’t have to deal with them personally. Our members are paying room and board directly to housing, and not being fucked around by their health care team or the pharmacy that has a contract with hundreds of our people being served.

That's a damn good question....As someone who has worked in the industry for several years, I wish we could get people more engaged, but frankly most people think (in my experiences) the industry is just boring....

I do think more shows like this should exist.....I think healthcare entities (hospitals, health clinics, advocates, and etc.) should invest in social media and do more podcasts (over the past few years I am seeing more of this, but would like to see this grow)....
