Favors ‘excited’ to be free agent for first time in career
dfavors1-777x437.jpg

JUNE 27, 2018
Utah Jazz big man Derrick Favorswill be an unrestricted free agent this summer for the first time in his eight-year career and says he’s excited about testing the open market and controlling his own destiny.

Favors, who has been with the Jazz since 2010, has set up a few free agent meetings already when free agency starts on July 1, according to Eric Woodyard of the Deseret News.

“I’m definitely excited about being a free agent for the first time and pretty much getting a chance to control my own destiny,” Favors told ESPN’s The Undefeated. “I’m just trying to find the right situation that makes sense for me as a player. Be in the right spot. Get a chance to showcase my talent. Get a chance to showcase what I can do. I’m just focused on finding the right situation that is the right fit for me. I don’t think you get a really good feel over the phone. I’d rather be face-to-face in a meeting, ask questions and kind of figure stuff out.”

In 77 games this past regular season, Favors averaged 12.3 points and 7.2 rebounds while shooting 56.3 percent from the field for the Jazz.

Utah defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first-round of the playoffs, but lost to the Houston Rockets in the second-round. During the postseason, Favors posted 9.3 points and 5.2 rebounds. He shot roughly three shots less per game compared to the regular season.

“It was a great season for me,” Favors said. “I think I exceeded a lot of expectations in a sense. I know there was a lot of question of how I would come back after the season before being injured. People wondered if I could guard the perimeter. I know there was a lot of question on whether me and Rudy[Gobert] could fit offensively. I know I went out and proved a lot of people wrong. I didn’t have the best stats because I had to sacrifice a lot. In terms of basketball, I exceeded a lot of expectations.”

Favors enjoys playing for Jazz head coach Quin Snyder, regarded as one of the best coaches in the league. He’s open to re-signing with the Jazz but will definitely do his due diligence to see if there is another team which can utilize his skills more.

“Like I said, I want to be in the right situation that benefits me as a player,” Favors said. “It will play a big role. I am trying to work on more things to get more involved in the offense. I really do enjoy being out there in Utah. I enjoyed all of my teammates. I enjoy the organization, the front office and the coaching staff. But it is definitely a business. There might be a situation where I do have to leave. It would be tough. But you have to put yourself in the right situation, because the teams are going to do that for themselves, too. You just have to find the right situation.”

LeBron James declining option, will become free agent

CLEVELAND -- LeBron James will not pick up the player option on the final year of his contract with the Cavaliers and will become an unrestricted free agent, according to ESPN and multiple reports.

James had until 11:59 p.m. ET Friday to inform the Cavs of his intentions before the option expired.

The decision will make the four-time MVP the headliner of a star-studded free-agent class that includes Paul George, Chris Paul and DeMarcus Cousins, among others.

Free agency will begin at 12:01 a.m. ET Sunday and the balance of power in the NBA could shift, should James leave Cleveland to possibly create a new superteam with the Los Angeles Lakers or join a burgeoning power such as the Houston Rockets or Philadelphia 76ers.

James has bolted as a free agent twice -- in 2010, when his contract was up with Cleveland and he chose the Miami Heat, and in 2014, when he exercised the early termination option in his Heat contract and returned to Cleveland. He also opted out of his contract with the Cavs in 2015 to sign a new "one-plus-one" deal, and then opted out of his contract again in 2016 to sign a new deal with two years guaranteed and a player option for the third year.

That third season -- worth $35.6 million for 2018-19 -- is the option that James is declining.

According to ESPN front-office insider Bobby Marks, Cleveland can offer James a more lucrative deal than any other team -- a five-year max contract in the neighborhood of $207 million. Any other suitor can offer a four-year pact worth $152 million.

Should James re-sign with a shortened one-plus-one deal in Cleveland -- in order to give himself the chance to explore free agency again in the summer of 2019 -- his compensation for 2018-19 would be $35.4 million, and 2019-20 would jump to $38.2 million as the option year.

James, 33, is coming off one of his finest campaigns as a pro in 15th season. He played all 82 games for the first time and averaged 27.5 points (his most since 2009-10), tied a career high with 8.6 rebounds per game and set a career high with 9.1 assists per game while shooting 54.2 percent from the field.

He followed that up in the playoffs by averaging 34 points, 9.1 rebounds and 9 assists while shooting 53.9 percent. The Cavs advanced to the NBA Finals for the fourth consecutive season and were swept by the Golden State Warriors.

James finished second in MVP voting, amassing 738 points, behind only first-time winner James Harden of the Rockets (965).

In the days that have led up to James' opt-out decision, the Lakers have jockeyed for positioning in the race to obtain the three-time champion by ramping up trade talks with the San Antonio Spurs to acquire all-NBA forward Kawhi Leonard, as reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Him declining more than likely means he not going to Houston; they cant sign him to any type of money. He would have had to opt in and Cavs trade him to Houston. Sounds like its either Philly, LA, or back to Cavs...

I think he should stay and wait till next year

not that I really CARE.

but the LA is crazy...

he CANNOT go there alone

but if he can get Paul and EITHER PG OR Kawhi (that would be BETTER)

I think that would be GOOD for the league...

Imagine THAT squad vs. the Monstars, the Celtics, Utah and Philly?

Really shocked LBJ about to go to a new team. Does he really thinking joining the Lakers, Rockets etc will help him beat the Warriors? Or, maybe beating GS aint on his radar. Maybe he just wants to play for a big market before he retires.

If he gets KL, it's curtains. You thought the Rockets slowed down the game. Stick with CLE, Boston may trump them. It's a no brainer.

True

I just seen on Twitter that he might go back to the Cavs on a 1 year revised deal.

Opt out of Cleveland doesnt mean Cleveland is no longer on his sign list.

Considering what he doesnt have with the Cav (as far as consistent help) maybe he thinks he deserves more than 35. Maybe other incentives. Imho, he should be the highest paid player in the NBA

I think he'S going back to the Cavs with a new 1 year deal, then after that deal is up, opt out, then another 1 year deal, then again, and again, then retire :hmm:

BGOL will have an influx of Lakers fans now just like how GS fans popped out of nowhere 4 years ago on here.

The "GS cant be beat" dudes will become Celtic fans. No more "the east is weak" talk on BGOL.

Half the GS fans ARE Laker fans.

It sounds like Leonard doesn't want that spotlight with LBJ; but then it's like why you wanna go to L.A. then? :hmm:

Exactly. I have a cousin who jumped on the GS bandwagon as soon as the Kobe dynasty was over. That shit is gonna be comical when they all flip back as Laker fans.

Its already happening. Kobe nut riders that became Dubs fans for 4 years now say they Laker fans again and dont want LeBron. Too late, you move you lose. People forget them dudes hopped on the Thunder wagon in 2012 when Westbrook and Durant ended Kobes playoff career, then hopped off when Bron beat them in the Finals.

Shit, could've fooled me.:dunno: He's young, and he was giving the Warriors that work before they cheated. Watch that first half on youtube.

Durant did the same thing, but he folded and joined the Warriors.

And he took Lebron on and won. That's alpha shit.

Telling Popovich fuck you and your city and your money is alpha. Tim Duncan took pay cuts for years.

Gregory Popovich's time is about up in the NBA. Say he's the GOAT. It's over. He/ the system won't allow players to become true alphas. It's a players league now.

Danny Green was scared to leave the plantation, taking less money. I was so disappointment. But it is what it is.

Maybe Kawhi wants to evolve into his full alpha potential now. And make LAL or LAC great again. Pushhhhh.
