Well I believe the origin was actually him being cheap shotted by a certain unskilled big headed euro trash bum who slid under his landing foot when he shot a jumper. They even made a rule to address it that off-season.
Kawhi is also officiated very delicately ever since then. He gets to the line A LOT and you really arent allowed to get too physical with him. The NBA does not want him being hurt and missing entire seasons anymore.
