You do this first to set a tone imo. A big part of the contest is to entertain. Once you lose the audience early it's over.
The dunk contest isn't what it used to be..it's just isn't exciting anymore when these players aren't creative with their dunks.
If there was other shit to watch during that time, I wouldn't even be watching that dunk contest.

Very few of them are doing better than their parents or were directly empowered by them to be more successful, and that was by design.
