It doesn't draw big names anymore because the league isn't as small time as it was in the 80s (which was slam dunk Contest peak). Everything in that time period was about promotion and expansion because the league wasn't very visible. Today, unless you're a no name why do it? Even in the 80s, Dominique, Jordan, Spud Webb, were not the biggest stars in the league at the time, but raised their stock competing. Jordan stopped doing it by age 25 (4th season). Most of the guys who compete today are just like he was, on bad teams tryna raise their visibility. It's just not held in that same esteem cuz the league is waaaaaaaay bigger now. Nate Robinson himself wasn't a "big name" but raised his visibility doing it. It's always been for scrubs and young guys.

Jordan dickriders poisoned the discourse so bad in the 2010's, even unaccomplished players started buying in. Imagine if we said the only reason Steph Curry makes so many threes is because he plays in the West where scoring is easier in track meets and not a lot of defense is being played so his accolades deserve an asterisk? That's the type of lazy arguments dumbasses would make to keep their favorite sneakers propped up.
