10 takeaways from tonight in the NBA:
1) First things first:
"Lillard, your tattoos are only decent!"
"Middleton, I respect your game but I hope you miss!"
"Portis, your eyes are slightly too big for your head!"
"Gallinari, you need a haircut!"
"Lillard, your mom’s watching!"
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, there was a heckler by the mic screaming all that during free throws.
The "Bob-by sucks" chant made a return and we even got a whistleblower. No, not that kind. Someone was really blowing a whistle during the game and causing confusion. PA announcer had to get on the mic and threaten fans with ejections and arrests if it continued.
"I could go on for hours about our fan base. Our crowd is just unbelievably amazing." - TJ McConnell
2) Got a bit of a surprise this morning with Dame (Achilles) being upgraded after missing the last two games. We were told on Tuesday that he wasn’t able to do anything, so yeah, that escalated quickly. Or maybe it’s just the playoffs and coaches are misdirecting to keep other teams guessing. You could tell that he wasn’t himself but dude gutted out 35 minutes in an elimination game. Scored 28 points on 68.6 TS%. Can’t hate on that.
Giannis got super close to returning. Doc said he had two great workouts today but just couldn’t get there. Damn good of Indy to close this one out cause all signs pointed to him returning for Game 7 in Milwaukee.
"Just the fact that he wanted to be out there with his guys is pretty cool." - Doc Rivers on Dame suiting up
3) This one’s gonna be remembered as the TJ McConnell and Obi Toppin game.
TJ McConnell:
20 PTS (playoff career-high)
9 AST
4 STL
92.9 TS%
Obi Toppin:
21 PTS (playoff career-high)
8 RBS
31.0 USG%
66.1 TS%
Obi benefitted from Myles Turner foul trouble. TJ benefitted from being the best player on the court.
They’re the first duo in Pacers playoff history to each score 20 or more points off the bench in the same game.
"Toppin had a hell of a series overall ... TJ is just a pain in the a*s. He just really is. He didn’t do great offensively ... but he was just this pest defensively." - Doc Rivers
"TJ actually helped me today. Told me to be aggressive. Everybody did their job today." - Obi Toppin
4) What I couldn’t understand is why Doc didn’t try matching TJ and Obi’s energy. Andre Jackson Jr. and AJ Green both got just 5 minutes and most of that was blowout run. I get that you wanna ride or die with your vets but those dudes put up a 129.0 DRTG in a must-win game.
"I’m gonna do whatever I can for this franchise. I think we can win. I’m going to do everything I can to create that because it means more to me than I think you think." - Doc Rivers
5) Don’t think it’s fair to grade the Bucks season on this series with the Dame/Giannis injuries but it’s worth mentioning for the final time...
They were 30-13 when they fired Adrian Griffin. Doc Rivers is now 14-19 in elimination games. Another older team goes down. Man, there’s a whole lotta youth left.
Pacers beat the Bucks 120-98. First time Indy’s won a playoff series since 2014.
"It was a roller coaster of a year ... It was a lot for me to fight through but I take a lot of pride in standing tall when things don’t go as planned." - Dame
"It’s everything man ... It’s amazing. I just love being here. I love being with the Pacers. Everybody here is amazing to me. We’re not done yet." - Tyrese Haliburton on what it means to advance and be a Pacer
6) Sixers got fed up. They couldn't handle another game full of Knicks fans so ownership went to the secondary market and scooped up 2,500 tickets. They gave them out to first responders, healthcare workers, and other local organizations. If that wasn't enough, they called up season ticket holders to encourage them to show proud and loud. TRUE STORY.
"F*ck the Knicks" - Wells Fargo Center
"Let's go Knicks!" - Wells Fargo Center
So good.
7) "I've decided nothing matters. They kill us on the glass, it goes down to the buzzer. We kill them on the glass, it goes down to the buzzer. Joel scores 50, it goes down to the buzzer." - Nick Nurse pregame
Knicks were up by 22 in the first quarter. Sixers were up 3 at halftime. Game went down to the final possession. All I kept thinking about was how right Nick Nurse was. Nothing matters.
8) Them Nova boys again ... in Philly. Basketball is beautiful.
Donte DiVincenzo: 23 points, 7 assists, 5 stocks, 48 minutes. Earned his minutes back by playing extremely physical defense on Maxey.
Josh Hart: 16 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists, 46 minutes. Been dared to shoot 3's all series and hits the biggest one of his career with 25.1 seconds left.
Jalen Brunson: 41 points, 12 assists, 44 minutes. Man, three straight 40-point playoff games is crazy.
"I told em, ‘enjoy it till midnight.’ I guess we’re already past midnight, so we’re thinking about what we have to do next." - Thibs
9) First TJ McConnell, now Buddy...
Buddy Hield, this series:
Game 1: 11 minutes, 0 points
Game 2: 15 minutes, 2 points
Game 3: 4 minutes, 0 points
Game 4: DNP-CD
Game 5: DNP-CD
Game 6: 21 minutes, 20 points
Teammates were absolutely loving it on the bench. His first playoff series ended on a good note. Probably his last game in Philly. Way to stay ready buddy boy (pun intended).
10) Tobias Harris:
29 MIN
0 PTS
4 REB
-10
It's not all bad, Philly. He's finally off the books.
Shoutout to Joel Embiid (39 points, 13 rebounds, 40 minutes) before I head out. Big fella was busting his ass out there on one knee the entire series. We know those 4th quarters ain't you. Get healthy this summer.
Knicks beat the Sixers 118-115. Jalen vs. Tyrese is gonna be fun as hell.
"We got some work to do. We’re gonna have to figure it out this summer ... we all know now that Joel and Tyrese is a hell of a combo to start with. We just got to get back to work." - Nick Nurse
