Ten Takeaways From 12/3/24

ONE) Mark Williams Back

It’s been almost a year (360 days) since we’ve seen Mark Williams (4 points, 3 rebounds) on the basketball court. This time coming off a strained tendon in his foot and not the nagging back issues… yet. Charles Lee said that he’d be on a significant minute restriction and boy was he ever. He couldn’t even touch nine minutes. Let’s just say that you could tell that he hadn’t played in a year. It was ugly but that’s the be expected. Nick Richards (22 points, 14 rebounds) started ahead of him for old times' sake. He had a double-double at the half. First Hornet to do that since Mark Williams, hey! KJ Simpson (8 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds) thankfully closed ahead of Vasilije Micic (5 points, 5 turnovers). Micic (-4.4 EPM) has been one of the worst players in the entire league. Don’t be surprised if heads back to the bench while LaMelo’s out. Brandon Miller (34 points, 7-16 3PT) showed out in front of his GOAT, Paul George.

Playing without Embiid and Drummond, the Sixers started Guerschon Yabusele and KJ Martin alongside each other since Caleb Martin was getting eased back in (that’s a guess). Paul George (29 points, 8 assists, 37 minutes) had his best game as a Sixer. Maxey was awful until late, scoring 13 in the 4th. Jared McCain (17 points,27.3 USG%) looks like he’s sticking on the bench with Nurse not trusting him to close. Man, he’s really tanking the kid's ROY chances, isn’t he? Joel Embiid’s not expecting to play tomorrow, PG wants to…

“I want to—I want to play. I’m a little sore so I'll see how I feel in the morning, but 100% want to play. Especially, with how we're playing right now. Absolutely.” - Paul George on wanting to play in the B2B

“It felt good to put a jersey on. It's obviously been a while. Been a long time coming. So just shout out my teammates, shout out the staff for keeping my head in it. It was tough. Nobody likes to sit out that long, so I think it's just a shout out to them.” - Mark Williams on his return

Sixers beat the Hornets 110-104.

TWO) Final Destination in Cleveland

Before this one started, the only thing on my mind was how much Cleveland’s point differential would be. Cavs were 16.0 favorites and even that felt too low. As the game went on though, my mind shifted to, “How many players gonna survive this?”

First victim: Kyshawn George hurt himself contesting a Donovan Miller drive. His leg buckled and was ruled out for the game shortly after.

Second victim: Corey Kispert rolled his left ankle on a drive. He stayed in to shoot free throws then was ruled out for the game.

Third victim: Donovan Mitchell hurt his shoulder running into a JoVal screen. Looked really bad at first. Went to the locker room but was able to return to the game.

Fourth victim: Darius Garland also collided with JoVal and was hit in the head. He went to the locker room and did not return. Was being evaluated for a head injury.

Fifth victim: Malcolm Brogdon left the game with knee soreness. He did not return.

See what I mean?

“I’m good. I’m alive.” - Darius Garland on his head injury

Cavs beat the Wizards 118-87. 31 points.

THREE) The Perfect Half

Lemme show you where the Bucks stood at halftime against the Pistons:

78 POINTS
15-21 3PT (71.4%) !!!
86.4 TS%

You really think Detroit had any shot after reading that? Goes without saying, those were the most points and threes made in any half this season by Milwaukee. They scored their 100th point with six minutes left in the third quarter.

Earlier this season, Giannis (8 assists, 10-11 FG, 8-12 FT) torched Detroit for a season-high 59 points on 71.1 TS%. Pistons tried shutting the water off here but this thing was already flooded. Giannis only missed one of his 12 shots en route to 28 points. Six of the nine guys in rotation finished in double-figures.

"They put a tournament in front of us, and we want to win it." - Doc Rivers

Bucks beat the Pistons 128-107. Milwaukee has won nine of ten.

FOUR) Knicks Offense is Real

The Knicks' #1 ranked offense (121.1 OFF RTG) vs the Magic’s #3 ranked defense (104.5 DEF RTG). That’s what this was hyped up to be but Orlando didn’t hold up their end of the bargain. New York scored 121 points on 64.5 TS%. To be fair, Orlando was without Goga Bitadze so it wasn’t exactly the same defense but still. He was a late scratch with an ankle sprain that happened near the end of their game against Brooklyn. WCJ slid over to the 5 and Tristan Da Silva got back in the starting lineup. Wendell (2 points, 7 rebounds) is having a rough go at things. He was a team-worst -22 and was dominated all game. I have a hard time seeing him stick with the starters once Paolo returns.

The entire Knicks squad showed up in this one. Josh Hart (11 points, 13 rebounds, 10 assists) got another triple-double, his eighth with New York. Had none in his previous six seasons. Karl-Anthony Towns (23 points, 15 rebounds) was doing Globetrotter-type passes. Miles Bridges is shooting 56.5% from three since returning from a knee injury on November 25. Mikal Bridges is averaging 25.0 points on 77.1 TS% since last Friday’s embarrassment against the Hornets.

"No. I might get a new watch though." - Josh Hart on if there was anything extra about the NBA Cup

Knicks beat the Magic 121-106.

FIVE) “It’s looking good, isn’t it?” - RJ Barrett on the chemistry between him and Scottie Barnes

It sure is. The duo combined for 64 points and 14 assists against the Pacers. Scottie’s 35 points is a new career high. Not as high as you’d think, right?

Over their last four games:

RJ Barrett - 28.3 PPG, 7.5 REB, 7 AST, 69.9 TS%
Scottie Barnes - 24.8 PPG, 9.5 REB, 8.8 AST, 58.5 TS%

Maybe I’m crazy but I’m pretty excited to see how this whole thing looks when Gradey and Immanuel return and we’re getting close.

For the second consecutive game, Carlisle started Andrew Nembhard (6 points, 4 assists) and then sat him in the second half. This time, he got him up to 18 minutes. Quenton Jackson started the second half on Sunday against the Grizzlies, and Jarace Walker (0 points, 25 minutes) started the second half today. The only good news for Indy was Tyrese Haliburton performing well on the road. On the season, he’s averaging 13.4 PPG in road games and 22.7 PPG at home. Today in Toronto, he scored 30 on 78.6 TS%.

Raptors beat the Pacers 122-111.

SIX) Thunder DGAF

Not gonna lie, only putting them here for the quotes. OKC was playing Utah so yeah, there was nothing to look forward to here. We already knew what the outcome would be but afterward, the Thunder were asked what The Cup meant to them, and well…

Here are the hits:

“No. I’m gonna go home and hug my wife.” - On if he was gonna watch Spurs/Suns after the press conference

“Zero. Number one because of player health. I don’t love the design because it incentivizes that. There’s a certain grace you win with. They’ve created an incentive that flips that on its head. There’s an angel and devil on your shoulder, we’re going with the angel.” - On the temptation of running up the score for point differential

“I don’t really know much about the Cup and how it works or anything… I just want to win.” - Cason Wallace on if he was gonna watch Spurs/Suns after the press conference

“I wasn’t at all until I knew we were gonna win tonight. It’s all too confusing.” - SGA on paying attention to the cup

How can you not love this team? If you haven’t noticed by now, I don’t enjoy it either and don’t care to understand it. I vibe with these views. OKC had 18 steals in this game LMAO.

Thunder beat the Jazz 133-106.

SEVEN) Free Throw Disparity

Free Throws:

Memphis 13-14
Dallas 30-44

I should probably just leave it then and move on cause that’s all you need to know. THE MAVS ATTEMPTED 26 FREE THROWS IN THE FOURTH QUARTER! Honestly, they didn’t even need to run any offense with how often they were sent to the line. They had 25 friggin’ turnovers and still won, I’m still not over it.

“I don’t know how in an NBA Cup game you have that big of a disparity…I’m gonna be careful with my words.” - Taylor Jenkins on the free throw disparity

I will say that it’s not all on the refs. Jenkins should be upping these guys' minutes by now. In an “important” and close game like this, no one touched 32 minutes. I mean, look at the minutes these players are averaging this year:

Jaren Jackson Jr - 28.5
Desmond Bane - 27.7
Ja Morant - 27.7
Santi Aldama - 27.5
Jaylen Wells - 25.2

OK, I won’t keep going but you get the point. The minutes are probably gonna spread even more with Edey coming back. They’re hopeful for this weekend. Desmond Bane (19 points) still hates the Mavericks for not selecting him in the draft.

Jason Kidd said Klay Thompson would likely play around 20 minutes and he played exactly that. Man, the Mavs trailed 111-103 with 3 minutes left and outscored the Grizzlies 16-0 the rest of the way. What an incredible performance… by the refs.

Mavs beat the Grizzlies 121-116. They’ve won nine of ten.

EIGHT) Jeremy Sochan’s Back

Jeremy Sochan (14 points, 12 rebounds) returned from a 13-game absence. Do you remember what kind of numbers he was putting up in the six games before he fractured his thumb? 17.3 PPG, 8.5 REB, and 3.3 AST in case you forgot. The only reason I remember is because of how little I have of him in Best Ball.

Mitch Johnson said pregame that he’d have no minute limit but they’d monitor him because of how long he’s been out. Don’t you just hate when coaches say that shit? Just say he’ll be limited but you don’t know how much until you see how he looks. We’d all be content with that. Anyway, he put up a dub-dub in just 21 minutes. He came out of the game fine physically but admitted he was gassed. Mitch also stuck with the 9-man rotation even with Sochan back. God bless him. Wemby seemed to have hurt his back. I didn’t hear anything about it until after the game.

“I think he got hit on that one play but he finished the game. We just took him out for that last play. So I haven't talked or heard anything.” - Mitch Johnson on Wemby’s back

Suns on the other hand ain’t as healthy. They lost KD in this one after he turned his ankle with about 4 minutes left in the first half. Grayson Allen started the second half for him. Budenholzer said that he didn’t know much more than what he got told at halftime and that it stiffened up. Oso Ighodaro (28 minutes, 7 points, 3 rebounds) started for Jusuf Nurkic (thigh), which sure shows a lot of trust on their end. Giving the rookie his second career start against Wemby? I like it.

Suns beat the Spurs 104-93.

NINE) Warriors Go 10 Deep!

God, how long have we waited for this? I don’t wanna jinx it but it appears that the days of the Warriors going 12 or 13 guys deep are behind us. This team was giving Pat Spencer minutes for the sake of the bit. It all went too far and once Steph spoke up about it in their last loss to the Suns, you knew Kerr would listen. Lindy Waters is the odd man out for now. Who knows what’ll happen when Draymond returns? Speaking of, Dray was on his pod talking about how he’s “a little afraid” about this calf injury. Compared some of the symptoms to the ones he felt in 2022 when he ended up missing three months. He’s saying that he’s using that year to help navigate him through this injury so we’ll see. Jonathan Kuminga (19 pints, 25.7 USG%) started in his place. Steve Kerr also said that he expects Brandin Podziemski to continue to start next to Steph but he also went off on him in the postgame so plans could change I guess. He called him out for fouling MPJ on two different 3-point attempts.

“He can not be that guy. He can’t foul jump shooters. I love Brandin. Hell of a player. Hell of a future. But I hope he watches this clip because he needs to hear it.” - Steve Kerr on Podz

Kerr also lost it on the refs at the end and he was right to do so. Christian Braun dove for a ball at the end and called a timeout that they didn’t have but the refs missed it. They told Kerr none of them saw it despite it being pretty clear on TV. It woulda given them a free throw and the ball with the chance to win but they blew it.

Jokic put on another 4th quarter masterclass to close this one out. He scored 15 of his 38 in the quarter on 90.1 TS%. Made every play down the stretch to help the Warriors go on an 11-0 run to finish.

“When you lose, you’ve got to experiment and try different things.” - Steph Curry on the tighter rotation.

Maybe some of these guys can finally show a ceiling.

Nuggets beat the Warriors 119-115. GS has lost five straight.

TEN) Chaos in Sacramento

This whole game was chippy from beginning to end but I guess that’s what comes from sharing the court with Dillon Brooks.

Brooks regained the NBA league with six technicals after getting into it with Malik Monk and De’Aaron Fox. That’s when the game unraveled for Houston. Rockets were up 54-43 with two minutes left in the half. Kings then made their next 15 shots over the next eight and a half minutes. Kings ended up scoring 42 points in the third which is wild against this Rockets' defense. 46.7% (14-30 3PT) from three against the team allowing the 3rd worst 3PT%.

Then with about two minutes left, Udoka stormed onto the court toward crew chief John Goble. I thought he was seriously about to swing on him and I think Goble did too. You could see a flinch. Ime had just reached a boiling point of fouls not being called evenly. It wasn’t one specific call. He and Sengun both get tossed and I’m not sure exactly what happened after that but apparently Tari Eason was going after a fan in the stands off-camera. He heard the fan heckle, threw his towel, and ran straight at him before getting held back by security. We might be getting suspensions but check what Udoka said postgame…

"Blatant missed calls. Ticky-tack moving screens and little shit like that. Told 'em get some fucking glasses open your eyes." - Ime Udoka on what got him upset

COME ON!

"People don't usually (talk) to me, and for good reason." - De’Aaron Fox on the chatty nature of the game

Kings beat the Rockets 120-111.

I don't know about this. We just gave him a contract extension. If he's out of the starting lineup he'll be getting a bunch of money to sit on the bench.

It'd be better to trade him if a team would be willing to pick up his contract.

Celtics and the Heat played Monday. Heat sat out half the squad. Jondoe and Beiii was cracking jokes together the next day.

The NBA should just have teams only play when they face Bron. I mean if the other games really don't mean nothing, why bother?

Of course the Heat play Bron tonight, and everybody from the Heat that rested Monday will play tonight. Jondoe barely posted against the defending champs. But a win tonight against the 9th seed Lakers and he'll be posting like it's the Finals.

There's no athlete in any sport at age 40 thats gotten this kind of respect. Since 2010, Bron been bigger and more important than the league itself.

That was one of the worst officiated games I've ever seen....

Rockets v Kings

This felt like some retaliation shit for Fred putting his hand in all them refs faces and told them YOU'RE A BITCH to their face before going to the locker room.

I think a lot of us were saying this two years ago. He's a small guy.

No reason to take unnecessary contact and fall down.

This was called a common foul, no review.

Jalen Green had a cut above the eye, had to get stitches, and went to see an optometrist due to blurred vision.

Fuck those refs.

I've been fouled like that before, thought I was going blind immediately after:smh::mad:
