Ten Takeaways From 1/20/25
ONE) Gafford Career Week
It's been a helluva week for Daniel Gafford. Since Dereck Lively II has been out with a right ankle sprain, Gaff has had career-highs in two of three games. Scored a career-high 27 points against the Pelicans last Wednesday and then topped that today against the Hornets with 31. 21 of those were scored at the half which is a new career-high as well. He was going right at Mark Williams (13 points, 13 rebounds), who’s been playing at a high level. Williams battled foul trouble throughout the game. Kyrie Irving had 33 points on 59.0% TS despite shooting two airballs. Quentin Grimes was a late add to the IR with back spasms and missed his third game of the season.
Nick Smith Jr. (19 points, 73.1% TS) started for Brandon Miller again and I don’t think he’s letting go of that spot anytime soon with how he’s stepped up. LaMelo Ball had 20 points at the half and finished with 23. Thought he did a lot of good without having to score, especially on the defensive end. He also had almost as many threes (5) as the entire Mavs team (6). First time Dallas shot under 20% from three all season. Josh Okogie (5 points, 4 rebounds) played 19 minutes in his Hornets debut.
"He's earned everybody's trust." - Charles Lee on Nick Smith Jr.
The Hornets beat the Mavs 110-105. They’ve won three straight and four of five.
TWO) Amen vs Ausar
Well, this was fun. We got the Ball brothers a few days ago and now the Thompson twins. The third time they’ve matched up against each other, the first time with both of them starting. Remember when LeBron said, “They aren’t like the rest of us. They different”? They really do look like superheroes out there with their freakish athleticism. Jesus, I’m starting to sound like Jay Bilas.
Amen Thompson in 40 minutes: 17 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, 53.9% TS
Ausar Thompson in 23 minutes: 11 points, 9 rebounds. 0 assists, 1 block, 42.7% TS
They’re twins but they’re clearly at different stages of their careers right now with Ausar having to deal with the blood clots last season. The most important stat not shown there though is Ausar getting his first win against Amen.
"I'm not even gonna open my phone bro, I can't even do it. I got his messages on silent." - Amen on Ausar
The two most impressive players on the floor in this one were Jalen Duren (16 points, 14 rebounds, 6 stocks) and Cade Cunningham (32 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists). This was probably Duren’s most impactful game this season. Was a team-best +16. Cade took over the 3rd with 19 points but hard to ignore the 10 turnovers. He’s second in the league in total turnovers (177) behind James Harden.
The Pistons beat the Rockets 107-96.
THREE) DiVincenzo’s Toe
Minnesota received some tough news this morning before their game against Memphis. Donte DiVincenzo is out indefinitely due to a left big toe injury. Great toe, big toe, whatever we’re gonna call it, his foot is in a boot. This really blows but he’s going to get a second opinion. As a starter over their last six games, he was averaging 17.5 points (42.1% 3PT), 5.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists. Was giving them a much-needed boost and is now gonna be out for a while.
"We also have got another guy in there, at least. You're gonna replace 28, 30 minutes a night with multiple guys. Situationally, it could be different people. [Minott] has obviously played for us. Anxious to see [Shannon Jr.] back healthy..." - Finch on rotation beyond Dillingham
FOUR) It’s Rob’s Time
Donte DiVincenzo may be out indefinitely with a toe sprain but at least it opens up some playing time for Rob Dillingham. There’d be times this season that he’d show something and you thought it was enough to keep a spot in the rotation, then he’d barely play or be a DNP-CD. Don’t think that’s an option now. They need his playmaking and energy more than ever. He scores a career-high 15 points on 93.8% TS and is a team-best +16 in a two-point loss. He was so good, it opened up things for everyone. Minnesota was up 100-95 when Finch decided to sub him out for Mike Conley and you just knew right then at that moment that it was gonna backfire. Memphis outscored them 13-6 the rest of the way and sneaked out a win. Naz Reid scored a season-high 29 points and pulled down 8 boards. His 21st career 20-point game off the bench. Ties Sam Mitchell for second in franchise history. Anthony Edwards (32 points) attempted a season-high 18 free throws. Julius Randle (5 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists) went 0-7 from three, with a lotta them being good looks. Feels more and more like his time with the starters is coming to an end.
"I was just going with the experience. Put him in for the defensive stop and just left him in to just manage the game." - Chris Finch on Conley over Dillingham down the stretch
GG Jackson (4 points, 2-5 FG) made his season debut coming off foot surgery. The fans were chanting, “We want GG” and got their wish. He played just 11 minutes and I’m not sure that was even planned. This is what Taylor Jenkins said pregame…
“We’re still being mindful of where he’s going to fit into the rotation. I really liked his progress over the 3 Hustle games. I wouldn’t be surprised in the near term, whether it’s today or the next couple of games, he’s going to get an opportunity.”
Sounded like they were gonna really take it slow with him so maybe the chants escalated things, I dunno. Ja Morant (19 points, 5-16 FG) was questionable earlier in the day with right foot soreness but ended up playing. Looked like that foot was still bothering him in his 30 minutes. Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 15 of his 24 points in the fourth.
“I felt like tonight was a little teaser but you know, I’m more excited than him probably to be out there on the floor with him.” - Ja Morant on GG Jackson’s return
The Grizzlies beat the Timberwolves 108-106.
FIVE) Okongu > Capela
I can’t believe I’m actually typing this but Onyeka Okongwu (14 points, 9 rebounds) has finally dethroned Clint Capela (12 points, 9 rebounds) as the Hawks’ starting center. Not gonna lie, I went to double-check in injury report when I first saw that starting lineup. Thought I might have missed something on Capela but nah, both were healthy. Let’s be real, this shoulda happened a long time ago. Maybe it was the three games before this when Onyeka averaged 18.3 points and 15.7 rebounds that helped nudge Snyder but whatever it is, we’re here now. He just helps open everything up for them. It’s only one game so far but OO played 28 minutes and Capela played 20. That’s about 4 more minutes for Onyeka and three less for Capela than their season averages.
Trae Young struggled a bit with the Knicks’ ball pressure, specifically Mikal Bridges. He had 27 points but shot 8-of-22. Had more turnovers (9) than baskets. And Bogdan Bogdanovic’s streak of 110 straight games with at least one three-pointer is officially over (0-4 3PT). The fifth-longest streak in NBA history. He’s been struggling hard over the last four games, averaging 5.0 points on 29.7% TS.
Jalen Brunson scored 19 of his 34 points in the first half. Mikal had an efficient 26 (12-17 FG) and Landry Shamet (10 minutes) made his way into the rotation after being a DNP-CD in their last game. The Knicks forced a season-high 23 turnovers.
"It's tough to beat the Knicks on the road…They played well tonight, shot well…Brunson & Bridges in particular.” - Quin Snyder
The Knicks beat the Hawks 119-110.
SIX) Nick Richards Starts
Nick Richards had a memorable Suns debut over the weekend against the Pistons. He put up 21 and 11, getting to the line 9 times (7-9 FT). Naturally, that was enough for the Suns to think he was fully up to speed. They gave him his first start against the Cavs two days later and the results were way different.
Nick Richards’ First Start:
4 PTS
4 REB
5 FOULS
50.0% TS
-26 (team-worst)
Their first-half rotation was interesting, to say the least. Richards played 12 minutes and Plumlee played 4. Oso didn’t even play. They were mostly using KD as the small ball 5 when Richards sat. Curious if this is something they’re gonna lean more into. Bradley Beal (ankle) returned from a two-game absence and scored just 5 points in 25 minutes.
This Cavs team wasn’t even healthy and they still won by 26. They were without Evan Mobley (calf strain), Caris LeVert (right wrist), and Isaac Okoro (shoulder). Atkinson said that he doesn’t believe Mobley’s calf injury is serious by the way. He’s day-to-day. The Cavs played a lot of zone in the second quarter, giving the Suns problems when they went small. Max Strus (9 points, 21 minutes) received his first start of the season. Jaylon Tyson (10 points, 5 rebounds) gave them some good minutes with them being so thin. Donovan Mitchell (33 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists) has scored 30+ in three of their last four games.
"It's a tough defense to score on if you thinking a shot is going to come open for you without you pressing the issue. We could've drove it a little bit more, but we don't play against zone every game. We don't have a zone package yet." - Kevin Durant on the Cavs’ use of zone
The Cavs beat the Suns 118-92.
SEVEN) Rough Day For Golden State
First, Golden State announced that Draymond Green has a mild left calf strain and will be re-evaluated in a week. It’ll rule him out for at least four games. Then they went ahead and had their largest home loss in the Steve Kerr era. It started with the non-Steph minutes in the first half.
1st Half:
Steph ON +2
Steph OFF -17
I’d like to take this moment to remind everyone how bad this Dennis Schroder trade has been for the Warriors. He was a -19 in the half and on the season, has by far the worst +/- on the team (-6.6). Kyle Anderson has the second-worst +/- (-1.9).
As for the second half, the Celtics just made everything in the third quarter to balloon their lead to 34 before the 4th began. Starters sat the rest of the way. Boston badly needed a win like this with their recent struggles. Let’s see if they can build on it.
The Celtics’ 3rd Quarter:
43 PTS
16-24 FG (66.7%)
8-12 3PT (66.7%)
11 AST (68.7% of their makes)
3-3 FT
The Celtics beat the Warriors 125-85. This was Golden State’s first 40-point home loss since 1985.
EIGHT) The Pels Comeback
I gotta say, not many things on this earth I look forward to less than the Jazz starting lineup. It’s already hard enough trying to predict which shitty players they choose to lead the tank on a nightly basis, it’s even harder when they announce the wrong players. They announced Kyle Filipowski (10 points, 17 rebounds) as the starter over Cody Williams (on the scoreboard too) but Williams started the game over Filipowski. I don’t know why they’d do this but I’m convinced it’s because they hate us. Then check this, they started Filipowski over Williams to start the second half. Again, they hate us. Sad news on Cody though, he looked like he turned his ankle pretty badly in the third quarter. Couldn’t put any weight on it and was a quick rule out. He was in a boot and on crutches after the game. We probably won’t be seeing him for a while so Kyle might be a thing now. Utah’s other rookie, Isaiah Collier (20 points, 11 assists) is starting to figure things out. He’s the first Jazz rookie to have double-digit assists in three consecutive games.
The Pelicans were down 25 points early in the second quarter without Zion Williamson or Yves Missi (both non-Covid illnesses). Then New Orleans’ guards stepped up, specifically CJ McCollum. He scored 31 of his 45 points in the 2nd half and overtime to help the Pelicans have their largest come-from-behind victory in franchise history. First Pelicans player since Anthony Davis (2018-19) to have multiple games with 45+ points in a season.
"We knew how we came out (in the first half) was unacceptable. We came in the locker room and regrouped. Willie (Green) got on us, as he should. We knew we had to turn the page." - Jordan Hawkins on the 25-point comeback
The Pelicans beat the Jazz 123-119. New Orleans has won four straight and 7 of their last 10.
NINE)
Was going back and forth in my head all day on whether I should go to Bulls/Clippers. Decided against it because it was a school night for my boy and the winds were acting up again. Thought I made a terrible mistake when Matas Buzelis played 13 first-half minutes but nah, he didn’t touch the court the entire second half. Shoutout to Matas btw on getting invited to the slam dunk contest. At least someone wants to see you perform. Bulls won this game in the third quarter. Er, Zach LaVine won this game in the third quarter. He scored 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. I’ve seen Zach play millions of times but this was some of his prettiest ball yet. He was scoring on all three levels. Shoulda known once I saw his good friend Blake Snell sitting courtside. Bulls were without Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu, Jevon Carter, and Torrey Craig. Coby tweaked his ankle against Portland on Sunday. Donovan said there’s no timetable on his return. Ayo has some calf soreness from “the density of games”.
Clippers were without Kawhi Leonard (rest) and Ivica Zubac (corneal abrasion). Was Zubac’s first missed game of the year. Mo Bamba started in his place and played 15 minutes. Kai Jones didn’t play until garbage time. Terance Mann (12 points, 6-9 FG) surpassed 3,000 career points on his bobblehead night. Norman Powell scored 14 of his 27 in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough. Clippers are in the midst of a ‘six games in nine days’ stretch so tired legs were certainly a factor. They were 9-of-42 (21.4%) from three.
"Happy Martin Luther King day, that's the only positive about today." - Ty Lue
The Bulls beat the Clippers 112-99.
TEN) Bam and Kel’el
Didn’t get to hit on this since it happened yesterday but need y’all to know that it finally happened. Spo started Kel’el Ware (ahead of Highsmith) alongside Bam Adebayo to start the second half in yesterday's win against the Spurs. It was as fun and productive as you could imagine. Spo first went to it midway through the second quarter when the Heat were down seven. They then went on a 36-13 run through the third quarter until Ware was eventually subbed out. Allowing Bam to switch more and not be in a drop zone, seeing them help off each other, etc etc. This is gonna unlock a lot. I’m also terrified cause I have very little of Ware in Best Ball. Didn’t think Spo would do this in his rookie year.
"It was exciting. Me and Bam been wanting for it to happen. Just for it to happen, we had to make the best of it for the first time, so we could show people what it looks like a little bit." - Kel’el Ware
“It just gives us another dynamic to our team, finally Spo trusted the process…” - Bam Adebayo
“That was definitely the initial spark to the game…they were dynamic, this was something we’ve been slowly starting to work on…I know Kel’el generates a lot of opinions, let us do our job…” - Erik Spoelstra
All these quotes remind me of my favorite Martin Luther King Jr. one…
“The time is always right to do what is right.”
Spo did what was right. Happy MLK Day!
