Small market teams that don't spend money don't win championships.
In this case Jimmy is the bad guy. Miami is paying him 41 million this season and will pay him 51 million next season.
Miami was honest with him and told him they would not extend him at the max rate. Butler wants a 3 year extension and his age would be 37,38 and 39 years old with the Heat paying him about 60 million a year.
If he simply told the Heat, man I want a max, The Heat would have traded him to where he wanted to go or he could have finished his contract and went to what ever team he wanted
