Arrowverse-Crisis-on-Earth-X-Crossover.jpg

This year's annual Arrowverse crossover will not include Legends of Tomorrow. Instead, the crossover, which will introduce Gotham City and Batwoman, will only incorporate Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl.

Like the recently announced Batwoman TV series, Legends of Tomorrow began as an Arrowverse crossover event. "Heroes Join Forces" in 2015 provided the setup for the main story behind season 1 of Legends of Tomorrow. The annual event became a three-way crossover in 2016 with "Invasion!", which saw the Legends get in on the action for the first time. Then, 2017's "Crisis on Earth-X" expanded the event to all four Arrowverse shows by adding Supergirl.

Related: Arrow Character Breakdown May Reveal First Batwoman Details

EW reports that Legends of Tomorrow will be left out of this year's crossover, but no further details have been revealed. What's noteworthy about Legends' absence from the event is that so far, every crossover has been bigger than the last, and no series that was already part of the event has ever been excluded. It's likely there are story-related reasons why Legends won't connect to the upcoming crossover.

We don't know what will bring Team Arrow, Team Flash, and Supergirl to Gotham City but it's entirely possible that whatever the problem is, it won't require the help of time-travelling superheroes. The crew of the Waverider often clash with powerful enemies that threaten the timestream, so fighting crime in Gotham City may not seem like the best fit for the series.

This doesn't necessarily indicate that Legends of Tomorrow will be disconnected from the Arrowverse in the 2018-19 season. Though many of the Legends who once had strong connections to The Flash are now gone, a few of the characters, particularly Sara Lance and Ray Palmer, are still tied to the rest of the Arrowverse. Since the Arrowverse has been known to do mini-crossovers, one or more members of the crew could appear on Arrow or The Flash, just as Sara did in the season 6 finale of Arrow.

A smaller crossover event for 2018 doesn't mean that it will be smaller in scale as well. A three-hour crossover special involving Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl could present massive repercussions for the Arrowverse, simply because of its setting. Not only will the crossover reportedly add one more series to the Arrowverse, it will open a door to a whole new corner of the DC Universe that will surely be explored for years to come. Even if Legends sits out in 2018, it could be back for a five-way crossover in the 2019 season.

And yet; there's still no mention of Black Lightning being included in any of this, huh...?
This is PART of the problem with the DC TV universe. Way too many universes.
They need to streamline the whole fucking thing. Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning and (yes, somehow) Gotham.

We need a real... "Crisis".:dunno:

Arrowverse Crossover to Feature Superman and Introduce Lois Lane — Who Should Play the Iconic Role?

By Matt Webb Mitovich / August 22 2018, 12:30 PM PDT

supergirl-222-24.jpg

This December’s Arrowverse crossover gets more super by the minute.

The three-night, Legends-less crossover event — kicking off Sunday, Dec. 9, with a special airing of The Flash — will not only introduce viewers to Kate Kane aka Gotham vigilante Batwoman (played by Orange Is the New Black‘s Ruby Rose), but also return Superman (played by Supergirl‘s Tyler Hoechlin) to the heroic fray as well.

Kara’s cousin/James Olsen’s BFF won’t be going stag this time around, however. Nope, Supes’ No. 1 gal, intrepid reporter Lois Lane, is coming along for the ride. Get to sharing your dream casting for the role in the Comments below!

“We couldn’t be more excited to introduce Lois Lane to the Arrowverse,” Supergirlexecutive producers Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner said in a statement. “This dogged, determined and brave reporter will make for a strong partner to Superman and amazing addition to our universe of DC characters.”

Lois Lane’s most notable live-action portrayers have included Teri Hatcher, Erica Durance, and, of course, the late Margot Kidder.

Hoechlin to date has portrayed Clark Kent/Superman four times on Supergirl, most recently appearing in the CW series’ Season 2 finale.

Once again, this year’s Arrowvese crossover event will air Sunday, Dec. 9 through Tuesday, Dec. 11, comprised of the ninth episodes of The Flash, Arrow and Supergirl‘s new seasons.

so is this in an alternate universe where Batwoman is the primary crime fighter in Gotham City? Cuz it seems like DC is really doubling down on these Bat family themed projects with no Batman.

Arrowverse's THREE Alternate Futures: 2038, 2042 & 2049 Explained
2
ADVERTISING

The Fall 2018 storylines of three of the shows that make up the Arrowverse - Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow - all heavily involve potential futures. Whether this is part of some grand plan on the part of The CW or simply odd timing remains to be seen, but the possibilities have fans' heads spinning. They also have some fans seeing red, due to the perceived impossibility of the three futures existing as part of a single unified timeline.

In the past, changes to the timeline of one Arrowverse show have affected the others, with one of the consequences of Barry Allen's time travel on The Flashbeing that John Diggle's infant daughter, Sara, was suddenly changed into an infant son named John Junior on Arrow. It is also possible for potential futures to be averted and not come to pass. For instance, the events of Legends of Tomorrowsince its first season have almost certainly prevented the dark future seen in the pilot episode. Likewise, the third season of The Flash was largely concerned with the unintended consequences of Barry Allen stopping his mother from being murdered by the Reverse Flash, resulting in a divergent timeline called Flashpoint.

Related: The Flash's Time Travel Has Stopped Making Sense

To that end, here is a brief rundown of what is know about each of the three relevant alternate futures in the Arrowverse this fall. This rundown will examine how the individual timelines might connect as well as what sticking points might keep them from linking together. It is entirely possible, however, that no links are intended and that these futures could ultimately be undone by the events of their respective seasons.

ARROW'S STAR CITY 2038 EXPLAINED
ADVERTISING

Arrow season 7's premiere stunned Arrow-heads with a shocking reveal in its final moments. After detailing the efforts of a young man to reach the remote island of Lian Yu, where Oliver Queen spent most of the five years of pure hell that turned him into Green Arrow, the episode revealed that the young man was captured by a hooded figure who demanded to know why the young man had come there. The young man was revealed to be William Clayton, Oliver Queen's son, and the hooded figure was shown to be an older Roy "Arsenal" Harper - Green Arrow's first protege. This further revealed that what was presumed to be a flashback was truly a flash-forward, twenty years into the future of Arrow. So far, the full purpose of these jumps is unclear, although many fans suspect William is the new Green Arrow.

ADVERTISING
In "The Longbow Hunters", William revealed that a GPS device hidden inside a stone arrowhead his stepmother Felicity Smoak had given him had guided him to Lian Yu. The exact coordinates led to a grave containing a cache of Oliver Queen's old gear, including his first bow. This, in turn, led William and Roy to Star City, which had changed drastically since they had both been there. It was here that viewers learned that The Glades - the worst neighborhood in Star City in 2018 - had been gentrified into some kind of fascist gated community for the rich and the powerful, with the police force acting as their private army and the working-class forced into the largely lawless domain that Star City had become.

Related: Everything Arrow Season 7's Flashforwards Have Revealed About The Future

William and Roy ran afoul of the police in "Level 2", but were saved by Dinah Drake, who had apparently abandoned her Captaincy in the SCPD to become Black Canary once again. Dinah was also revealed to had trained Zoe Ramirez (the daughter of Rene "Wild Dog" Ramirez) to become a vigilante. Apparently, Star City's laws against vigilantism in 2018 had been expanded to include a shoot-on-sight order. Nothing was said about the rest of Star City's heroes from 2018, beyond Felicity Smoak being dead and Rene Ramirez not daring to show his face in Star City for some reason.

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW'S SEATTLE 2042 EXPLAINED
It was in the third episode of Legends of Tomorrow's third season, "Zari", that the dark world of 2042 Seattle was first revealed. Though the exact details of how it happened were never discussed, it was explained that the United States had devolved into a fascist society sometime after metahumans were outlawed in 2021. This also led to religion in all forms being outlawed and ARGUS - a covert anti-terrorism organization in 2018 - becoming the main police force of the new regime.

The episode also introduced the character of Zari Tomaz. A hacker and resistance fighter, Zari was wanted three times over by the regime that ruled the United States in 2042. This was because she was a devout Muslim, a rebel fighter, and she possessed a magic totem (later revealed to be the lost Air Totem of Zambesi) which granted her the power to control the wind and fly.

Zari became a powerful addition to the ranks of The Legends, but she rankled against the team's rules against using time travel for their personal benefit. However, a relative eternity stuck in a time-loop drove home the point to her that trying to change history was incredibly risky and not easily accomplished. Still, this hasn't stopped Zari from finding creative loopholes to spare Helen of Troy the sad existence of a trophy wife in 'Helen Hunt' or saving a young widow from being burned at the stake in "Witch Hunt".

Hopefully they introduce Bruce Wayne in someway.

I can’t see them introducing Batwoman before Batman.

It’s also time for them to introduce Wonder Woman and Aquamn.

It’s been obvious since these shows started that it’s leading up to the formation of the Justice League.

Yes, this year’s Arrowverse crossover, “Elseworlds,” will introduce Batwoman(played by Ruby Rose). Yes, it will also include other iconic DC Comics characters like Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch), and John Wesley Shipp in a Flash costume. But at the end of the day, the crossover is primarily a topsy-turvy ode to the universe’s main trio: Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), the Flash (Grant Gustin), and Green Arrow (Stephen Amell).

And now we can finally reveal what the hell brings the Trinity together!

image

Jack Rowand/The CW
The three-night event begins with Arkham Asylum doc John Deegan (Lost’s Jeremy Davies) rewriting reality, which results in Oliver (Amell) and Barry (Gustin) swapping lives. In this new reality, Oliver Queen looks like Gustin and Barry Allen looks like Amell, and the two heroes are the only ones who know they’re in the wrong lives and have each other’s powers. This not only explains what’s going on in the recent promos, but also why the actors have swapped costumes.

“You’re not going to see me playing Oliver Queen’s mannerisms, or Stephen playing Barry’s mannerisms. It’s more being aware that for some reason we’ve switched lives and destinies. It’s more the fun of the situational comedy that we keep finding ourselves in, and less us having a complete role reversal,” Gustin tells EW. “We get to see Stephen do some of the more goofy speed stuff I have to do on a regular basis, and I get some actual combat as Green Arrow. So, we just see different colors for each of us.”

“Having superpowers is crazy! Wearing the Flash suit is crazy!” says Amell, who, like everyone else involved, sounds genuinely thrilled about the crossover’s story. “The idea is that in order to be the best version of Barry Allen, which I have to be because we face a threat, there are elements of his personality I have to embrace, and there are elements of my personality that he has to embrace.”

The swap is also one of the reasons reason “Elseworlds” is funnier than previous crossovers.

“My initial reaction in reading the scripts this year was that it would be a hoot to film. The comedy just lives in this. Even just seeing them in each other’s suits is funny; they’re literally putting themselves in each other’s shoes!” says Benoist, whose character, Kara/ Supergirl, gets pulled in because she’s the only one who can see Barry and Oliver for who they really are (the perks of being from another Earth?). “She inevitably becomes kind of a middleman because ultimately there’s conflict between the two and they start butting heads.”

Adds Supergirl co-showrunner Robert Rovner, “She’s trying to help them navigate what they’re going through and support them and kind of battle their way back to being who they’re supposed to be.”

That dynamic is on full display in a banter-filled scene EW observed in October, in which the three heroes find themselves locked up in Gotham City (as superheroes are wont to do), and it falls on Kara to referee an argument between the two men. Watching the three leads bounce of each other is a thrill, mostly because we rarely get low-stakes scenes like this that are just about Kara, Oliver, and Barry’s dynamic. (We’ve definitely gotten some Oliver-Barry moments like this.)

“The most fun aspect about really focusing on the leads is we really had a chance to tell a story about the troika that we’ve never really been able to do before,” says Arrow consulting producer Marc Guggenheim, who oversaw the crossover. “When you have Legends of Tomorrow part of it, and all of the other secondary and supporting characters, the amount of time we had Grant and Stephen and Melissa on screen together was actually pretty minimal in other crossovers compared to this year.”

image

Robert Falconer/The CW
The Arrowverse bosses decided not to include Legends of Tomorrow in “Elseworlds” because last year’s Nazi-filled four-part extravaganza, “Crisis on Earth-X,” was ambitious but also extremely difficult, as they had to juggle, well, everyone. “It’s very hard on the crew, it’s very hard on the cast, and we wanted this year to just be a little easier. That’s why we focused on crossing over mainly the leads of the shows and not including a fourth hour,” says Guggenheim. “The hard thing about crossing over with Legends is, because that’s an ensemble show, you’re crossing over with the entire cast. That said, there is a Legends cameo in hour 3.”

Furthermore, whereas “Crisis” felt like a four-hour movie, “Elseworlds” returns to the episodic format of the earlier crossovers. “I think this year, it feels a lot more like individual [episodes],” says The Flash showrunner Todd Helbing. “Flash kind of feels like a Flash episode, Arrow feels like an Arrow episode, Supergirl feels like a Supergirl episode.”

Adds Rovner, “It’s like a three chapters of one story, but they’re all kind of unique to their own show.”

Even though it’s relatively smaller, the writers and cast promise it’ll be just as satisfying. Says Gustin, “It feels like it’s going to be our strongest crossover, our funniest crossover. I don’t know what fans are excited for, but I’m excited just to see Superman, Flash, Supergirl, Green Arrow, and Batwoman all on screen togehter. It’s pretty amazing.”

“Elseworlds” begins Sunday, Dec. 9, with The Flash at 8 p.m. ET; continues Monday, Dec. 10, at 8 p.m. ET with Arrow; and concludes the following night at 8 p.m. ET with Supergirl.

Welcome home, Smallville!

EW is debuting a new image from this year’s “Elseworlds” crossover that shows Superman/Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) on the Kent Farm with Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch), who makes her Arrowverse debut in the three-night event that includes The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl. The photo, which you can see below, is an angle from Supergirl star Melissa Benoist’s first scene with the pair and was shot on the same farm that Smallville used during its 10 season run.

“I felt like we should’ve been eating apple pie and waving American flags. It was such Americana, and there were pickup trucks and Lois Lane had a toolbox and was working on a car,” Benoist tells EW. “That iconic relationship of Lois and Clark, [Tyler and Elizabeth] have just totally embraced it.”

Check out the photo below, and then read on to find out what you can expect from the Man of Steel and Lois Lane in the crossover.

The fact that Superman and Lois Lane are even part of the story is pretty unreal because DC Comics tends to reserve those characters for the big screen (Hoechlin has appeared in four episodes of Supergirl). However, when the executive producers and the network had their first crossover meeting last March, Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti had already received permission to use Superman. Lois entered the mix once they started breaking the story in what Arrow showrunner Beth Schwartz refers to as the Super Writers’ Room, which included Berlanti, EPs and writers, Geoff Johns, and Batwoman‘s Caroline Dries.

“When we were talking about the story we wanted to send Clark on in the crossover, we were talking about different elements and that’s when we started talking about Lois,” says Supergirl co-showrunner Robert Rovner. “We’ve always wanted to bring Lois onto the show. She’s such a great character and we were just excited to be able to have her and she organically fits into the story we were telling in the crossover.”

Benoist promises that fans won’t be disappointed by Tulloch’s portrayal of Lois. “She is such a force to be reckoned with, and Elizabeth is perfect for it,” says Benoist. “The way they’ve written her in this world, she’s a firebolt and really sassy and awesome. I think people will really respond to her.”

Superman’s place in the story is directly related to where Supergirl‘s eighth episode of the season. “Kara is coming out of the midseason finale at a crossroads, and the journey that she’s on is kind of helped by Clark, who is returning from Argo kind of on his own journey,” says Rovner, adding that the Supergirl writers pitched using the Smallville farm because “it kind of seemed like the organic place for them to meet” given where the Kryptonians’ heads are at when the crossover begins.

“Elseworlds” will also mark the first time that the Green Arrow (Stephen Amell) and the Flash (Grant Gustin) share the screen with Superman in the Arrowverse. If you think you’re excited about this, you aren’t alone. Gustin was also freaking out about it when he and Amell took a photo with Hoechlin.

“That was just like genuine, ‘What are we supposed to do for this photo?’ I was so flustered when I saw him in that thing,” says Gustin, referencing Hoechlin’s black Superman costume. “I hadn’t worked with Tyler at all as Superman, so that was the trippiest thing I’ve experienced so far on the show.”

Arrowverse Stars Preview 'Most Fun' Crossover Yet, Heroes' Wife Swap and Supergirl's Bond With Batwoman

Ask the stars of Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl about this year’s “Elseworlds” crossover event, and one word comes up again and again: fun.

“It was the most fun that I’ve had maybe ever throughout the course of doing the show,” Arrow‘s leading man, Stephen Amell, said during TVLine’s recent set visits.

The Girl of Steel, Melissa Benoist, echoed the sentiment: “This one was so fun, in particular, because it really was ‘the triad,’ so to speak.” She is, of course, referring to the trio of superfriends at the center of the event, which finds Oliver Queen’s Green Arrow and Barry Allen’s The Flash caught up in a body swap.

“Kara plays a really fun role in this dilemma that Barry and Oliver find themselves in,” Benoist previewed. “She’s the only one that really recognizes them for who they are in this Freaky Friday situation. And it’s really comedic, the whole thing.”

Arrowverse 'Elseworlds' Crossover 2018: Everything We Know
Launch Gallery

Selling the wacky switcheroo was important for Amell, who “had a discussion very early on [with Flash star Grant Gustin] that if this was going to work, that we really had to go for it,” the actor shared. “Because he has my learned abilities, and I have his superpowers, there are elements of each other’s personality that each of us have to embrace… So every once in a while, I’m channeling my inner Barry Allen, and I’m looking at Grant after the take, going [meekly], ‘Is it too much?’ But no, we had a blast.”

Read on for scoop on Oliver and Barry’s “new” spouses, the group’s trip to Smallville and Batwoman’s surprising connection with Supergirl.

WIFE SWAP | As glimpsed in promos, Oliver wakes up to his new life as The Flash and is greeted by a kiss from Iris West-Allen. And though Barry in turn is married to Felicity, “we don’t explore that as much as the Barry/Iris [dynamic],” Gustin said. Still, viewers will “get the comedy of Barry” — who comes-to while training with Diggle — “reacting to this new world and this new reality.” Ever the supportive wife, Iris is “really the one that believes [Barry] in terms of him saying that’s Oliver Queen,” her portrayer Candice Patton shared. “Barry comes over as the Green Arrow and convinces Iris that he’s really Barry Allen, and they have that connection. She’s kind of the one that brings that back to the team.”

HOME SWEET SMALLVILLE | Barry and Oliver’s quest to undo their situation will take them to Supergirl’s Earth-38, where viewers will finally meet Lois Lane (Grimm‘s Elizabeth Tulloch). Kara has “known her for a while in our story,” Benoist noted. “But playing scenes with her for the first time, the way they’ve written her is perfect. I think people and fans, especially of that mythology, will really love it. And Bitsie Tulloch just nailed it.” Plus, filming on the iconic Smallville farm “was really, really exciting. All of us were beside ourselves,” said Benoist. “To pay tribute to that show felt good. When you’re there, even though it’s in Canada, it feels like pure Americana. … There are some really, really lovely, heartwarming scenes on the Kent farm.”

FEMALE POWER | The Arrow portion of the crossover takes the trio of heroes to Gotham City, where they meet Kate Kane aka Batwoman (Orange Is the New Black‘s Ruby Rose), who has a surprising amount in common with Supergirl. “Their scenes are really nice because of their similarities,” Benoist described. “Kate Kane is Bruce Wayne’s cousin and all these things, so they really relate on a lot of levels that I don’t think Kara’s found yet in another female superhero. There’s a really deep understanding from the get-go between the two of them.”

The CW’s “Elseworlds” crossover kicks off on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 8/7c with The Flash(airing on a special night). The event will continue on Monday, Dec. 10 at 8 pm with Arrow before concluding on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 8 pm with Supergirl (airing on a special night).
