Dear Friends,

Join us on the AAPF YouTube channel TONIGHT at 8:00PM ET for a special episode of Under the Black Light, The Story of Us – Surviving The War On Woke: Black Storytelling in the Age of Backlash. Tune in to our YouTube live premiere of the full event which features a conversation moderated by Kimberlé Crenshaw with speakers Reggie Rock Bythewood, Valerie Complex, Jeanell English, and Patrick Gaspard to discuss the ways in which the backlash against global demands for racial justice in 2020 has exposed Hollywood's fragile commitment to Black storytelling. The evening of artivism also includes acclaimed artists and actors: Gina Loring (AAPF Artist in Residence), Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Aaron Pierre (lead actors from National Geographic's Genius:MLK/X), Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (from ARRAY Filmworks', Origin), Dominique Thorne (from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), and Vanessa Estelle Williams (from Candyman) who read powerful extracts from banned texts. Featured Session: The Power of Place: Transforming America One Block at a Time

Geoffrey Canada

President
Harlem Children’s Zone

Where you grow up, within 0.6 of a mile, decides the likelihood that you'll earn more than your parents in adulthood. To find solutions to economic inequality, it is critical to understand how and why ‘place’ and economic mobility interconnect. This session will trace the evolution of the place-based cradle-to-career model and share how practices developed in Harlem and beyond are leading to scalable solutions and systems change impacting over 1 million young people. Mr. Canada will emphasize the vital role of education within the place-based field aspiring to empower and uplift youth nationwide.
