That’s nearly twice as much as what Americans owe on student loans, car loans, credit cards and every other type of debt other than mortgages, combined, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. It amounts to about $23,500 in new federal debt for every person in the country.
The growth in the annual deficit under Trump ranks as the third-biggest increase, relative to the size of the economy, of any U.S. presidential administration, according to a calculation by a leading Washington budget maven, Eugene Steuerle, co-founder of the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center. And unlike George W. Bush and Abraham Lincoln, who oversaw the larger relative increases in deficits, Trump did not launch two foreign conflicts or have to pay for a civil war.
Little evidence, descriptive or otherwise, to suggest that the transition from the Obama to the Trump administration had a meaningful impact on immigrant arrests, whether measured as violence, property, drug, or traffic offenses. These results suggest that the immigration enforcement initiatives under President Trump did not deliver on their crime reduction pledges, but they also provide little evidence of over-policing of immigrants in discretionary actions such as traffic arrests.

The Biden-Harris administration today announced the cancelation of another $7.4 billion of federal student debt affecting more than 200,000 borrowers. This brings the total amount of canceled student debt by the administration to $153 billion for around 4 million borrowers. This time around, debt relief will reach debtors enrolled in the SAVE plan, in other income-driven repayment plans and those receiving Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
In July of last year, the Supreme Court had struck down Biden's plan to cancel $430 billion in student loans for around 40 million Americans all at once using the pandemic-era HEROES Act. The administration has meanwhile been chipping away at student debt with smaller cancelations using executive actions and, for example, relief for federal workers, veterans and the disabled. Debt from schools deemed fraudulent was also forgiven.
The amount canceled by Biden so far is about equal to 9.5 percent of all federal U.S. student debt (which stands at $1.6 trillion), while his previous plan would have been equal to 27 percent. Another bigger effort is again in the works: On Monday, the White House announced another plan which looks at forgiving loans for 30 million people. This time, the administration is targeting those whose balance grew after entering repayment due to payments not covering all of their interest.

Musk supporters outraged after he backs importing 'super talented engineers'
Some of his own followers expressed displeasure at X owner Elon Musk on Christmas after he signaled support for importing more "super talented engineers" from overseas.
On Wednesday afternoon, Musk responded to a post on X about a purported dearth of American-born engineering talent in Silicon Valley, which he argued was holding back the industry's potential.
"The number of people who are super talented engineers AND super motivated in the USA is far too low," he wrote. "Think of this like a pro sports team: if you want your TEAM to win the championship, you need to recruit top talent wherever they may be. That enables the whole TEAM to win."
This drew some objections from some of Musk's own followers who argued that Silicon Valley wasn't doing enough to hire native-born American engineers.
"There are over 330 million people in America," wrote one follower. "Surely, there must be enough among them to build your ultimate team? Why would you deny real Americans that opportunity by bringing foreigners here?"
"Your understanding of the situation is upside-down and backwards," Musk replied. "OF COURSE my companies and I would prefer to hire Americans and we DO, as that is MUCH easier than going through the incredibly painful and slow work visa process. HOWEVER, there is a dire shortage of extremely talented and motivated engineers in America."
Another Musk follower said that he should "open a school" to better train Americans, and then added, "We have brains."
"If you need a school, you’ve lost already," Musk replied.
Other followers accused Musk of simply not wanting to pay top talent what it's worth.
"There is plenty of us talent, maybe you are not offering enough," wrote Eben Plettner. "I work Almost 60 hours most week And have been a lead system's engineer on several defense projects and yet every time I turn a resume in to your companies they get rejected. I've been told it's because of my salary."
"Because wages are too low," replied Joshua Fontanilla. "Because they are being systematically replaced by foreigners. You’re going to lose a lot of political capital on this issue bro."
"I see tech company's laying off tech high skilled tech workers all over the place the past couple years," wrote another Musk follower. "I am an engineer of 10 years with plenty of friends that can't even get an interview after months and months. Where are you getting this imformation (sic)?"
