Rep. Clyburn: Dems May be Willing to Compromise on Qualified Immunity

Once again democrats are being pussy. You would think that with the public support around police reforms, democrats would push to have some meaningful reform. Getting rid of Qualified Immunity is the piece that may cause these officers to consider de-escalation instead of escalating situations that don't require force. If the taxpayer foots the bill for their misconduct, we will never see a change. They will continue to receive their pension and just move to another department.

I am cool with Jim Clyburn but this still is not going to get through the Senate because of them assholes Republicans over there. Not to sound like a broken record but I keep saying this....when cops start killing a lot of white people who are poor and middle-class this shit is going to change overnight but by that time it may be too late.

I have heard one of the republican suggestions of having the option of suing the police department of a jurisdiction, especially if the department has a known problematic officer.

“There is a way to put more of the onus or the burden on the department or on the employer than on the employee,” Scott told Bloomberg’s Laura Litvan, adding that Democrats he’s spoken with, including Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), the lead sponsor of police reform in the House, seemed open to that idea. Effectively, this suggestion would mean that police departments, rather than individual officers, would have to deal with potential lawsuits over misconduct. The thinking behind it is that it would still pressure police to be more accountable, while reducing some of the potential risks an individual officer would face.

That's more of the same damn rhetoric that's always bandied about.
Muhfuckas are ready to fold already. :smh:
Can you define “fold”? There was a story that came out 2 weeks ago that in exchange for qualified immunity for individual police officers, the new law would make the police district liable.

He's publicly floated the idea that portions of the Bill that the GOP would not support might just be taken off the table. That's only going to serve the GOP in opposing the Bill.

Essentially, the compromise has already been made.

You and I know it. I’m just interested in the 10 GOP senators that’s going to vote for this bill.

I'm not ready to call Clyburn a sell out or coon yet, but on the surface this is disappointing because qualified immunity is essential to true, lasting reform and also because if they give it up now it could be a long time before they get back to it. The bill can't pass with a simple majority, so some compromise is expected. That is unless they are willing to go nuclear and even then there could be DNC hold outs.

Suing police officers is not essential to any reform.

Suing police officers is not essential to any reform.

Although it may not be "essential", I do believe that some police will consider the financial implications when deciding to escalate a situation when it is unnecessary. I do believe that the power dynamic during the interactions and the confidence that there will not be any long term consequences for them and their families for police misconduct, plays a big role.

Unlike last summer, Democrats now control the Senate and have an ally in the White House. But the bill’s fate in the upper chamber is still uncertain, as Democrats would need at least 10 Republicans to send the legislation to President Joe Biden’s desk.

I say this and I feel this in my spirit at least twice a week. Our options are the bully in the school and the people the bully picks on. The Democrats have no fucking spine even when they're right they have no fucking spine

So let me ask you this. If the dems don't compromise (and I am not saying they should). What do you think they should do to get this bill passed with the qualified immunity elimination included?
