Rep. Clyburn: Dems May be Willing to Compromise on Qualified Immunity

"For decades, everyone just accepted that qualified immunity was a given because it was unlikely to change on the federal level. What this new legislative activity from the states shows is that there's actually a role for states to play in reforming this doctrine. They are deciding that the harms of qualified immunity far outweigh whatever benefits the doctrine provides."

"While abolishing the more than 50-year-old doctrine remains one of the main sticking points between

Republicans and Democrats over any deal on passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, a look at reform efforts around the country shows that several states have forged ahead with eliminating the protection.

Since Floyd was killed last May by then-Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin, at least 25 states have taken up the issue and considered some form of qualified immunity reform, including Colorado, New Mexico, Connecticut and Massachusetts, which have passed legislation to end or restrict the defense, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures."

So let me ask you this. If the dems don't compromise (and I am not saying they should). What do you think they should do to get this bill passed with the qualified immunity elimination included?
Republicans don't compromise with the Democrats. The Democrats compromise with Republicans. Get that shit straight. Democrats bend Republicans don't budge

New York City got rid of qualified immunity and this is how the police unions responded

This is the absolutely key to any police reform

And yet when the Republicans hold the majority all Dems do is compromise and try to meet across the aisle.
Yes this is true. The difference though is republicans have supporters who hold the line. They don't care if shit gets passed (even if it's for their benefit) or not. Dem supporters on the other hand will not hold the line and will start bitching and moaning to get something done.

Well you'd need some republican votes for that too, since there is at least 2 to 3 dems against that move.

Then..

"The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act would require 60 votes to pass an expected Republican filibuster in the Senate. It is not eligible for a budget reconciliation vote requiring only 50 votes and the vice president to pass as the Act is not a budgetary adjustment, but rather it creates a law, according to the rules of the Senate Parliamentarian."

I swear if Dems cave in to the Repubs and don't pass any meaningful legislation for Blacks only. I'm not voting midterms or Presidential election

That would be dumb. Beyer is 83. Imagine a Republican House and Senate, that will mean a Supreme Court that is 9-2 conservative for 30 years. This ain't the time to be pout with your votes. Focus on sending a quality State Senator from your locale to DC or work to flip a red congressional district.

So kill the filibuster?

Yes BUT ONLY if mother fuckers vote in 2022 to keep democrat control. If mother fucking talkin reckless on voting, then HELL NO.

Mcconnell with the house and senate (again) with no filibuster, Black folks will be trending towards slavery. I ain't even joking.

Vote got damn it!!!

Where is the accountability team that said they would be on the Democrats’ neck as soon as they had Trump out and a majority in the branches of the federal government?

This is a key issue to tackle but crickets. :smh:

I'm not ready to call Clyburn a sell out or coon yet, but on the surface this is disappointing because qualified immunity is essential to true, lasting reform and also because if they give it up now it could be a long time before they get back to it. The bill can't pass with a simple majority, so some compromise is expected. That is unless they are willing to go nuclear and even then there could be DNC hold outs.

They could add that shit in using a Covid relief bill. I need to know what's in the bill first.

Why? The average voter that was duped into supporting national level Democrats won’t turn out in the midterms. Biden’s “purple party” plan is working as planned. People like @easyb will be voting for Republicans in blue. :smh:

At some point in the last few decades, when everyday Americans wanted change, they started relying on political leaders to fulfill promises and get things done... Waiting for the good guys to save the day- not understanding that they themselves are "the good guys" whose job it is to put on sustained and unrelenting pressure until they get what they want.

Voting with the hope for change does no good if the people don't collectively demand that their politicians live up to their word.

Can you define “fold”? There was a story that came out 2 weeks ago that in exchange for qualified immunity for individual police officers, the new law would make the police district liable.
Which takes the heat of off the individual officers. Ask your self this question. What would be better, having a law that accounts for the individual officer or the district? Once these bastards kill you, they will just move to another district like they do now

You’re not getting any reform. You were never going to get anything substantive on the issue of police reform.

This is the nation of the crate challenge.

Imagine a serious problem with Corey Booker leading the expedition for a solution. Unless the problem is 50 year old man in search of sucking dick, I don’t think Booker is the problem-solving kinda guy. Dick sucking? Yes. Police reform? No. Not at all.

imagine asking for tough democrats and getting Charlene Schumer in return.

Can a president be indicted? Has that DOJ memo been rescinded? You can’t tell me you know what the problem is and make no attempt at solving it but will come around in 4 years asking for an extension. If you’re goal is to hope gutless white woman from the suburbs provide you with political courage you have placed yourself in a bad spot.

A country okay with 700k dead from Covid is a country that’s okay with rampant police abuse.

Don’t let these people piss on you and tell you the clouds are at peak orgasm.
