I can see why they did it it, Shameless, Nurse Jackie and House of Lies was a good 2 hour block for dark comedies type of shows.
But once those last two shows ended they decided to make Billions and Homeland the main fall Drama shows.
I guess trying to get a jump on HBO before Game of Thrones drops in the spring.

Here's my prediction how
Last episode showed a stark contrast between Debbie's sensible, yet bland relationship and her parent's crazy, destructive passionate one. She is going to notice this at some point, cheat on Neil, and get kicked out
The stress of Ian losing the love of his life triggers a manic episode. This is bad because he is in the middle of nowhere, (presumably) has no medication, and his entire life savings in his back pocket.
Monica's death somehow exposes to the private school that Liam is not Black. He is expelled because he can no longer help them reach their minority quota.
Monica's death also brings Carl back for the funeral and around people who get him into trouble.
Fiona is about to realize that she is not nearly as investment savvy as she thought. She get's royally screwed on the apartment. At some point her badly overfinanced car gets repossessed and the house comes up for grabs. She moves in with Debbie before Neil kicks them both out
The scam Lip and his friend pulled on the sports betting company gives him an unexpected windfall. By that point he'll be drinking and possibly doing coke with college hipster chicks.
Frank will keep on being Frank. He'll see the hidden crazy inside a square chick and try to turn her into a new Monica

It was good to get some info on Frank's life pre Monica, even with the small amount of detail provided. His words about Monica were touching and real.

For the first time I think the kids actually understood why he loves them and he loves Monica.
He couldn't properly express it until the viewing but there it was in plain sight.
He casually skips over how his life was before her. Her father is blaming him for fucking her life up when it was the complete opposite.
Frank is a junior in college, doing summer internships when he meets her. His life is about to be set basically and he threw it all away for her. I never doubted he actually truly loved her though. He was Monica's every other woman was just passing through.
I'm glad he told the kids he sees her in them and told them the qualities that they share.
She did love them she was just so fucked up and crazy-literally- she didn't know HOW to do it properly. Her heart was in the right place but her actions just always fucked up.
Fiona got hit the 2nd hardest coming to terms with her being the mother and never having one. None of the other kids know what it's like to not have a mom because Fiona is theirs. I was glad she was able to get some type of closure.
The hardest hit obviously is Lip.
He's Frank Gallagher Jr to a T. It's crazy because, he is both of them personified. His intelligence, is 100% Frank- His uncanny ability to fuck everything up is 100% Monica. He doesn't need to find a Monica to ruin him, he does it from within. He's the one that will ruin you.

This season felt like the writers were doing a possible final season by finishing up storylines like Micky and Monica. Creating a happy future for everybody
But leaving it open just enough to continue depending on Emmy's contract negotiations which were resolved.

I thought this episode was great and early on I knew Monica was Frank's downfall, but he loved her. I was glad to see them come together as a family and I think Fiona got some closure when she and Frank was in the yard after the meth and choking her and Deb.
I think they'll do ok, well I hope so.

This surprise season was much better than that shit last season but I think they're dangerously close to entering 'Dexter' and 'True Blood' territory where the final seasons are shit on a stick.
