From the perspective of questions around whether he will be the Democratic nominee, this is a smart move from Biden's team. It will be his first opportunity to speak and act as a president without having every sentence scrutinized. Not much press is going to be willing to (publicly) look at this from a political competence and horserace angle. And Biden will probably do a good job with something like this.
