Slutty Vegan shut down at Spelman and lead to a debate about black businesses taking advantage of their own damn kind

I don’t have problem with the prices if people are paying but, there should’ve obviously been some common sense with putting an expensive vegan restaurant on a college campus of all places. They should’ve brokered a deal with the franchise to lower prices for the students. Is the replacement Black owned as well?

IMO, a store with "slutty" in the name shouldn't be on a college campus.
My .02 cents
Yeah, when I saw the names of those burgers on the menu, I thought the same shit...yeah we know everybody on campus fucking but that seemed a bit much for something university admins would have to approve

And let’s be real; CACs give you more alcohol also; that’s another issue for me with black bars; it’s like I’m paying premium and getting less alcohol; no thanks I’m good…
Bdr from nyc so he gonna have an opposite experience from you.. something we know about white bars in nyc is a lot of times the liquor is fake.. the patron is montezuma, the henny is saliqnac , the grey goose/ Tito is some other cheap brand.. bartenders get to the club early to clean them bottles to make the bottle look pretty than they pour all the off brand shit inside the big name bottles.. people paying premium prices for cheaper liquor .. people paying 20-25 for a patron shot when in reality it’s montezuma which cost like $20 for a half gallon.. literally the shots probably worth 57 cent a piece and they making 20-25 bucks off of it..talk about next level flip.. or selling bottle water for 5-7 bucks.. water bottle cost less than 20 cent and they making 5-7 or more off of it.. white clubs in nyc

Hey man I'm not even hating on the prices of their "burgers". They could have had that at the top of the menu. It's vegan/vegetarian food. The possibilities for what could be served on different days is innumerable. I said Taco Bell earlier because when I was in college in NYC there was a Taco Bell in the cafeteria. I had only seen the commercials until then. $1,25 for a chicken burrito was righteous.

I just think a vegan/vegetarian spot should make a variety of dishes and not just focus on mimicking foods that are made of a meat or meats. There are roughly 50K plants we can eat. Compared to the varieties of me we may eat or have available to us. And It's not like you have a wait a long time for your food to cook. $3 for 16oz soup and sell the food by the weight of what folks chose to put on their plate. With the most expensive plate being $15 with a drink included. Those are school kids. There could have been way more customers and a greater turnover.

I'd like to see that too, but there's a lot to contend with.

Veganism is stereotyped as an all-inclusive lifestyle. You can eat Chinese food without being Chinese. Order pizza without being Italian. Hate Mexicans and still eat tacos. But the moment you eat at a vegan restaurant you become "woke", a "soy boy" or an "angry lesbian". So vegan restaurants are pressured to mimic a standard American diet.

Most college students have a very limited palette. They aren't used to making their own food choices or well educated in nutrition. This pressures vegan restaurants to make crappy fast food, but without the meat.

We need to do better in teaching our kids how to eat right, but most of us don't know ourselves. It's not a restaurant's jobs to educate our children and even when they do few listen. That's why veganism is fighting an uphill battle despite the obvious benefits.

The replacement is not black owned

Hilarious, but in this current environment, the Owner would be opening herself up for lawsuits if she did that, with anti-DEI groups/think tanks salivating :hellyea: to file new law suits against a Black-owned business.
Just like McDonald’s can charge more at an airport, they can adjust their prices accordingly. Like I said, they could've brokered a deal for lower prices on campus.

I almost always charge white clients more than black ones. I wish they would sue me for that.

Seriously. Think of the publicity that would generate. All these rich CACs launching their petty little "reverse discrimination" class action lawsuit with the press covering the details of my service, value of performance, clips of white folks singing along to Sheck Wes entered into evidence.

Man, I would be the most in demand party DJ in the Bay Area. Especially if I lose the case.

That's different than charging significantly lower. Those students sound like they prefer $5 and lower options. Not sure if Slutty Vegan can accommodate that. Plus, some were complaining that it's vegan only lol

You're not what those Anti-DEI think tanks would consider going after legally, if we're being honest.

Yeah,I’m saying place should do it at loss.No business should but, it’s odd the school didn’t consider the prices before agreeing to put them on campus.

I could see more of this being an issue especially that it’s college students.. college is chicken and burger crowd

Well, sometimes, as the old expression goes, the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

If they go after a black DJ for this it's thinly veiled racism. If they go after me it's about principle. My proximity to whiteness gives them plausible deniability.

Also, a black-owned restaurant can't automatically switch their prices based on who walks through the door. That's an accounting nightmare. If they own a chain with a more expensive location in a white neighborhood that can easily be explained by increased costs. You'd have a hard time making a case.

But for me? A black family wants a sweet 16 that's $600 to $800. If a white family asks it's $800 to $1,000. Nothing changes but the style of music. The lawsuit practically writes itself.

Everybody know 5 guys expensive and when some other posters we’re debating you I think they meant to say them instead of chick fila.. is 5 guys on any campuses? The debate would be if it was did people have it removed or just not go if they couldn’t afford it

My point for posting was many if not most complain about the prices of Five Guys, and yes people still go.

So if people complain about Five Guys, what does one think will happen with a fast food restaurant that's more expensive than Five Guys on a college campus.

This is visual proof again that it's not a Black or white issue. Or people wanting discounts because a place is Black owned.

It's a green issue, meaning it costs too much money to eat there with it specifically being on a college campus.

"Costco"?

Shouldn't you be shopping at CostBro?

breakfas-cclub-donnell-rawlings.gif
If there was 1 I’d be shopping there and I would have posted the addy and the info on here as well as text it to my peoples..I really do fuck with black own bizz and prosperity( I know you joking).. now back to the topic at hand the reason its a black issue cause for 1 if it was 5 guys burgers would it made headlines or even be a topic of discussion? The answer is no Spelman been around for decades and have various diff chains there and not 1 single newsworthy article about it. On top of that many colleges and restaurants work together and also seperate and there is no articles about it. Reason why it’s being talked about cause it’s a black college that had a black owned eatery and now they are no longer doing biz. It’s a black issue cause even according to your posting it literally was the only black restaraunt for the school and now it’s no longer there. some people also would have an issue with a black chain being replaced by a white chain. It’s like you already only had 1 black biz the least you could’ve done was replace it with another but nope it wasn’t. So some people would have a gripe about the black dollar once again being taken away from us and circulating into the white community. So those factors are why people would say it’s a black issue.

I 100% agree with this. Slutty Vegan was the trendy cool spot in Atlanta (from what I've heard) so they probably chose it on that and the fact that it's Black woman owned on a Black woman's campus

I said it’s not a Black and “White” issue, it’s a money issue why they’re not there anymore.

Race has nothing to do with why they’re not there anymore.

That was the original and only point.

According to another poster it was stated that some students Also wanted meat options..so it was also more than just about money

If the majority of the people in this thread told me that it was a Black and white issue, I'd have to rethink my stance and admit that I was wrong.
Fact a black biz is no longer there, fact is there is no more black eateries serving that school.. fact it wouldn’t be a story if it wasn’t the black biz that got pushed out( if the sushi spot got pushed out would their even be a thread on it).. fact is vegan food demographic is smaller compared to other food genres.. fact is vegan food cost more than most other food options.. fact prices might have went up the past 2 yrs.. fact is inflation has increased and people spending habits have changed over the past yrs.. fact college kids depending on background/ economics can be frugal spenders.. possibly this yr class spending habits differ from 2023 class… all these factors have been spoken on the past 6 pages.. anything else?
