If you graduate top of your class, you still got to get out here and get a job and in order for that to happen someone has to hire you. If you go to every engineering firm and they all tell you no, we won't hire you, you're overqualified even if you're not you're pretty much fucked.
It's frustrating as hell to know that you did everything right and still you can't succeed without somebody picking you. Doing everything right didn't hurt the situation, but it doesn't guarantee success. And we tell our kids that doing everything right guarantees success, and all it really does is guarantee you a slightly better shot at 'winning the lottery' so to speak.
