Tay-K speaks on getting sentenced to 55 years in prison. He will be eligible for parole after 27.5 years - January 23, 2047.

I know this will ruffle some feathers but I don't believe in the punishment system of criminal justice. A real criminal justice system should be focused around deterring crime not punishing criminals. As long as we have a system focused on punishment rather than deterrence, we will continue to have crime problems. A system of punishment feeds itself. It has no reason to deter crimes because it only eats when people commit crimes.

We have an emotional need to punish criminals that's not logical. Isolation from society has been a punishment for crime for thousands of years. It only serves as a direct deterrent. It does not deter the next criminal.

Tay-k didn't do shit to society. He allegedly killed actually people with families. Those people have been wronged but society has not been wronged to where we feel emotionally invested in his "punishment". Society has an interest in preventing him from hurting more people but once he's done shit nothing we can do would make up for the shit he has done.

I look at this crime news as propaganda meant to scare people into supporting an oppressive criminal justice system. It's sad all the way around but us talking about it without supporting a fix to the system does nothing.

Imagine a world where instead of spending all these billions on this dumb ass system we spent the money on identifying and diverting the next Tay-K. We ain't talking about how he got to where he is and how we can prevent the next kid from crashing out.

So if that was your family member he killed..better yet, one of your kids working as a photographer...You'd hug it out, forgive him, and ask that he be sent to a job skills training program instead of jail because he was wronged by society?

I'm not disagreeing with you on the point there is an overarching cause and effect standpoint..but this sounds like the same argument in reverse that white kid got off with when he killed a family while drunk driving..He was let go because of "affluenza".."he didn't know any better, because he lived a life of excess". Then he goes right back and does more fucked up shit. I don't care how rich or poor you are, there is an inherit sense that some things are just wrong. Whether a person actually gives a fuck, or thinks they won't get caught is a whole other issue.

If he killed one of my family members I would have a reason to be upset. But he didn't. My point was this idea that the public has an interest in punishing criminals. We have public outrage based on crimes that have no effect on us. Obama drone striked thousands of people signed off on it personally they had families. Are we outraged? No, why because they aren't Americans so nobody gives a shit. We allow this fake outrage at crime to drive this punishment mindset is my point. The bad thing we do is put ourselves in the position of the victim when we should not.

Absolutely there should be an inherent sense of right and wrong but that is disconnected from our criminal justice system. I can absolutely say murder is wrong but I have no individual responsibility to see punishment for that individual. That's the families concern. We take the revenge role in society and it's not that. I as a member of society have an interest in decreasing crime not punishing criminals.

A better system would be an individual deterrent and rehabilitation. Yes definitely remove the individual from society. But if we are going to pay for this individual to be in jail don't we have a societal responsibility to make that individual a better person when they are released. 99% of people that go to jail get out eventually. We base the way we utilize jail and the system of criminal justice on our emotional feeling about crime instead of a logical stance of how we keep our society safe.
