How close is the TV show to the books.

The spirit of the story is there.
The books were written 70+ years ago and so much has changed since then if there was a word for word movie it would look stupid
The books had so much discussing about people and what they do when things happen. It would confuse and bore you to death. Lots of little surprises and fixes to the timeline until . I can not say more or you would say it is a spoiler. But after all that you get even more shocks

Very different from the books with the exception of there being a foundation.
Almost immediately that's where the divergence begins. In the books there were 2 foundations at the opposite ends of the galaxy set up to shorten the time of chaos from 30k years to only 1000.

As I think about it I wonder how much did Asimov influence Herbert's Dune series, especially in regards to Leto's golden path...

They mentioned the two foundations but it was very briefly when Gaal talked to Hari on the spaceship.
I enjoyed the first season but they need to let folks know whether it be the future or past
