http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york...-decides-build-a-new-bridge-article-1.1128780ALBANY — Cash tolls on the rebuilt Tappan Zee bridge could be as high as $14 — nearly three times its current $5 toll.
Gov. Cuomo said Friday that toll hikes are necessary even if the state decides not to build a new $5.2 billon bridge since the existing span is in such poor shape.
“If you do nothing you are looking at about a $12 toll because you’d have to substantially repair the bridge,” Cuomo said. “I think the option that makes the most sense is to build a new bridge.”
State transportation officials are reviewing proposals from three contractors looking to build the new Tappan Zee, with a finish date eyed for 2017. A decision is expected later this year.
Cuomo argued the tolls would be about $28 if a bus or rail system were added to the new span — which many transit advocates have sought but the state has rejected as too costly. Cuomo also argued the hefty toll would be comparable to the George Washington Bridge, which will likely have a $15 round-trip cost within five years.
I hate that long ass bridge. It's a fucking long way to swim if shit was to ever happen & you couldn't drive to the other side. Every time I cross it, I think of that scene from True Lies with the damn Arab terrorist trucks crossing the Florida Keys.
