What do I keep telling you guys…… this is the reason why I cannot be his damn lawyer.
What I’ve observed over the years and perhaps I should have known it all along, is that the US legal system is set to prosecute and exonerate near any and every action. It all depends on who is charged, who is prosecuting, the judge, and of course the jury. They can always split hairs on the circumstances and particulars to make two near identical cases have opposite outcomes. The GOP is just getting obnoxiously flagrant with it. They don’t care anymore, do whatever they think will preserve and further their power, then say it’s perfectly fine and legal. All the legal codes, and precedents be damned.
This is basically it. Republicans have stopped playing "the game", and their supporters are so used to the game that they can't (or refuse to) recognize that the conditions have changed.
My main issue is that at this point, all of their potential candidates are trash, but Trump is literally toxic. It's winding into primary season. You absolutely could ditch Trump and go with another candidate. But the fact that they can't abandon the idea of Trump shows how damaged their ideology is.
