Landman
Season One
10 Episodes
8.5/10
This series debuted last year and I started watching this weekend at home and finished this afternoon.
It’s put out by Taylor Sheridan who is the creator of Paramounts top series with the Yellowstone shows, Tulsa King and Lioness and others. I had originally posted the trailers and information on this series in the Yellowstone thread cuz I was unsure if Taylor’s series are all in the same universe. I eventually found out they are not (except Yellowstone series which are connected). All his other projects on Paramount+ are in different universes. So I made this thread. This series has a couple of actors who have roles in Taylor’s other shows playing different characters.
For the folks who suffer from TV ADHD, everything you need to know about the series is explained in the first 7 minutes of episode 1 before the opening credits. Taylor is brilliant in explaining new series right from the start and doesn’t waste time. Majority of primary Character introductions/development, like all his series is done quick and explained when the characters are introduced in episode one. More development is done as the series goes on.
The series mainly revolves around the Oil industry in current day Central Texas. Lots of references/quotes are scattered throughout the series dealing with the cultural, history and impact of the American Oil Industry in America and geopolitics, without being preachy and dragging the show down.
Billy Bob Thornton is “The Landman” Tommy Norris. The series is around his character, dealing with his job as Operations VP with the oil company he works with and how his personal life affects his job.
From the first episode to the season finale, every scene keeps you glued to the screen. Very slim chance you will drift off or go fiddling around with your phone while watching it. The series does a good job depicting the dangers/risks of working in the Oil fields.
Like all of Taylor’s shows, he hits it out of the park with casting. The right actors for their roles was perfect.
Ali Larter co-stars and she is still holding up. Her character has her looking like a burnt out MILF, she does the role well. Demi Moore co-stars and has a small speaking role.
The series scored high in streaming/viewership. Paramount+ has not announced a season 2, but we should here something by the end of the year. The season ended with an interesting plot that can carry it out for 2 more seasons before introducing a new plot line, to stretch the show out for 5 seasons. 5 seasons for series is becoming the norm nowadays.
Overall, it’s a well produced series and scripted/acted well. If you enjoyed the “Sicario” films, you will enjoy this series.
