Love for The Boondocks is still very much alive. So, Sony is bringing the Freeman family back to television.

“A complete re-imagining” of The Boondocks “for the modern era” is in development from original series creator Aaron McGruder, the studio announced Wednesday morning at the 2019 Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

Based on his comic strip of the same name, McGruder’s The Boondockspremiered in November 2005 on Cartoon Network’s late-night programming block Adult Swim. The comic launched in 1996. The reboot, a satire for the modern era, is said to chronicle the adventures of the Freeman family against the evil local government tyrant Uncle Ruckus, who rules the fictional Woodcrest County, Maryland with an iron fist.

In a March appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, comedian John Witherspoon, who voiced Granddad on The Boondocks, teased his involvement. “I’m on the cartoon. What is it? The Boondocks? I didn’t change my voice for The Boondocks. And they coming back,” he said. “The Boondocks is coming back. It’s one of the best cartoons I’ve ever been on.”

In February, McGruder resurrected his Boondocks comic strip to poke fun at the state of America in 2019. As shown in a series of Instagram posts shared by radio host Charlamagne Tha God, it featured characters Huey, Riley, Granddad, and Uncle Ruckus, as well as satirical takes on President Donald Trump and the Robert Mueller investigation.

HBO Max has given a two-season, 24-episode order to a reimagening of the animated series The Boondocks, from creator Aaron McGruder and Sony Pictures Animation. The new Boondocks will launch in fall 2020 with a 50-minute special. All 55 episodes of the original The Boondocks series will also be available on WarnerMedia direct-to-consumer platform at launch.

The Boondocks reboot was taken out to the marketplace in late spring and was confirmed by Sony Pictures Animation at the Annecy festival in June. HBO Max immediately emerged as the most likely home for the new series because of WarnerMedia’s history with the franchise. The original Boondocks animated series, based on the comic strip created by McGruder, aired on the company’s Adult Swim, a large part of whose programming will be available on HBO Max. The series earned McGruder a Peabody Award.

The Boondocks was a revolutionary series that sparked conversations on hot button issues and brought dark subjects into the light with episodes like ‘The Trial of Robert Kelly’, ‘The Fundraiser’ and ‘The Story of Gangstalicious’,” said Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer, HBO Max and President, TBS, TNT and truTV. “Aaron is a gifted visionary whose unique style of storytelling is a welcome voice and we are elated The Freemans are making their thugnificent comeback on HBO Max.”

The new Boondocks follows the adventures of self-proclaimed “Civil Rights Legend” Robert “Granddad” Freeman, and his two rambunctious grandsons Huey and Riley. The family has recently moved to an idyllic community in suburban Maryland only to see it taken over by the tyrannical Uncle Ruckus and his bizarre neo-fascist regime. Life under Ruckus turns out to be an everyday struggle to survive.

“There’s a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today,” said McGruder, “It’s crazy how different the times we live in are now – both politically and culturally – more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There’s a lot to say and it should be fun.”

McGruder returns as showrunner and will serve as executive producer along with Norm Aladjem for Mainstay Entertainment as well as Seung Kim and Meghann Collins Robertson. Sony Pictures Animation will produce the series in partnership with Sony Pictures Television.

On HBO Max’s original programming slate, The Boondocks joins another upcoming series with IP pedigree, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, a prequel to the Gremlins movies.

Sony TV has been very active mining its library for revivals/reboots. It has One Day at a Time on Pop (formerly on Netflix), the Live In Front of a Studio Audience franchise at ABC based on Norman Lear titles, and the upcoming Mad About You limited series revival on Spectrum Originals, among others.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams is making three TV shows for HBO Max, including a prequel series to The Shining and a take on DC's Justice League Dark.
Perhaps the most intriguing entry is Overlook, a which is billed as "a horror-thriller series inspired by and featuring iconic characters from Stephen King's masterpiece The Shining. Overlook explores the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Overlook will be a 10-episode drama written by Dustin Thomason and Scott Brown, who worked on Hulu's King-inspired series Castle Rock.
WARNER BROS. PICTURES
There's also a series based on characters from the Justice League Dark universe, the details of which will be revealed at a later date. The JLD was introduced in 2011 and features a group of supernatural DC characters like John Constantine, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Shade, the Changing Man, and Zatanna.

And there's an original series called Duster, which is co-written by Abrams and LaToya Morgan (The Walking Dead). Duster is set in the 1970s Southwest and is about "a gutsy getaway driver for a growing crime syndicate whose life goes from awful to wildly, stupidly, dangerously awful."
Abrams will executive-produce all three shows via Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television Group. HBO Max is WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming platform, set to debut in May.

I approve of this message, we need this show in our lives once again. Aaron was like Negrodomus with the culture, he predicted so much.

They say when he went after Tyler Perry is the time he get began to lose his show to bullshit. I know a girl who works in the industry and she said Tyler is a flaming homo.
