it just started rolling out today, so your devices may not have updated yet. Probably try rebooting them. From what i have read, if you have HBO Go, you automatically get Max. You can download the Max app and try logging in with your Go info. I'm only using it on YTTV and it just showed up for me, i never had the other services.

If you HAVE HBO now, you may not have access to Max if the billing service you are using hasn't made a deal to include Max. For example, people who pay for HBO through Comcast won't have access to Max as of now. However. If you pay through Verizon Fios, you will have access to Max.
Max will have some things regular HBO won't. However, Max will have everything that's on HBO.

So, How Do I Actually Get HBO Max?
By Josef Adalian@tvmojoe
It’s the only place you can watch Friends now. Photo: NBC
And then there was HBO Max. Following last year’s launches of Apple TV+ and Disney+, plus this spring’s Quibi rollout, AT&T–owned WarnerMedia has now jumped into the streaming wars with its vision of video utopia. (This is particularly true if you’ve been missing Friends on Netflix, since the launch of Max means the Central Perk gang are back on streaming.) While HBO Max will offer a ton of content — about 10,000 hours of movies and series at launch — the buildup to its debut has led to some audience confusion. People are understandably wondering whether they’ll need both HBO and HBO Max, how much more this new service will cost them, and why there’s so many different products with the name “HBO” attached. If you’ve got questions, we’ve got answers.
There are already so many HBOs: Regular HBO, HBO Go, HBO Now. What the [bleep] is the difference between them all?
First, it’s okay to be confused. HBO has never made it easy to distinguish between its various products. Here’s how to tell them apart:
HBO, of course, is HBO: the nearly 50-year-old pay service which you could only get via cable or satellite until about ten years ago. It lives on your TV set, and you can record shows and movies as they air or use your TV provider’s video-on-demand platform to catch up. (Also, to be clear, it’s not TV. It’s HBO.) You can subscribe to HBO through a cable company like Comcast or Charter, a virtual cable provider like Hulu with Live TV or YouTube TV, the satellite service DirecTV or, more recently, via a digital subscription on a channel store like the ones operated by Apple, Amazon, or Roku. The price varies, but it’s usually $14.99 a month.

HBO Go is the streaming, on-demand version of HBO. Introduced in 2010, Go has all of HBO’s original programs, plus its ever-changing catalogue of big feature films, and most can be streamed the minute they debut on linear HBO. (A few talk shows, such as Real Time with Bill Maher and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver get uploaded to Go a few hours after they premiere on TV.) Beyond whatever current shows and movies are in rotation on HBO, Go also includes access to most of the network’s massive library of original series — everything from The Sopranos to Barry. You cannot buy or subscribe to HBO Go directly, however: It is only available, at no extra charge, to anyone who buys HBO as part of a cable or satellite package. You sign in to Go using whatever login credentials you’ve set up with your TV provider.
HBO Now is the exact same thing as HBO Go — except it’s for people who don’t have a cable package. It was launched in 2015 in response to the growing number of cord-cutters: HBO realized streaming-centric consumers who had no interest in paying for cable needed a way to get HBO, other than “sharing” somebody else’s HBO Go login. So they created HBO Now, which you can stream via an app you download from Apple or Android and costs $14.99 a month. It used to be the only way to get HBO without a cable subscription, but as noted above, you can also get HBO if you use Apple TV or Amazon’s Fire TV platform, or if you get live TV from Hulu or YouTube.
What is HBO Max, then?
Well, as the barrage of ads you’ve probably seen for weeks will tell you, it’s HBO and so much more. (It’s okay to groan here.) Seriously, though, a key thing to understand about HBO Max is that everything on HBO comes standard with it. There’s even a button you can click on the Max app that will basically show you just HBO stuff. The “Max” is the extra stuff WarnerMedia includes to convince people who don’t currently pay for HBO to give in and subscribe: Hundreds of classic movies and TV shows, more kids programming, and original series not included with HBO.
What sorts of movies and TV shows will I get on HBO Max?
Anything HBO is on Max: The latest episode of Insecure, the new movies that drop every Saturday, the library of old HBO series such as Sex and the City and The Wire. Max adds on hundreds of movies (including big chunks of the Criterion Collection, Warner Bros. and MGM classics curated by Turner Classic Movies, and the Studio Ghibli catalogue) and some very well-known TV sitcoms (Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Big Bang Theory). There are big movie franchises, too, including all of the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies and, within a year, every Batman and Superman movie since 1980. Max also has animation from Crunchyroll, plus big primetime toons such as South Park, The Boondocks, and Rick and Morty. For kids, there’s classic and recent episodes of Sesame Street, programming from Cartoon Network and new Looney Tunes cartoons. HBO Max is also making its own original shows, starting off with the Anna Kendrick rom-com Love Life and a reality competition devoted to voguing dubbed Legendary. Expect 30 or more Max originals by the end of 2020.
How much does HBO Max cost?
It’s $14.99 per month. It is not a coincidence that this is the exact same price as HBO Now, HBO from your cable provider, or what Apple, Amazon, and other companies charge for a digital subscription to HBO. Since HBO Max includes everything that’s on HBO and HBO Now, the company wants to send a message: Max gives you more HBO for the same money, and you don’t need more than one service.
I already have a version of HBO. How do I get HBO Max?
For many people, it will be pretty simple. If you use the HBO Now app to stream HBO through an Apple TV or Google device, select Samsung smart TVs, or on your phone, your HBO Now app will (supposedly) magically transform into HBO Max on May 27; you don’t even need to download a new app. (Make sure you have automatic updates turned on, or look for an update to the app.) Similarly, if you get HBO via Apple TV channels, Hulu, Charter, or YouTube TV, you’ll start seeing HBO Max content show up on your user interface starting Wednesday. You can keep watching HBO shows the same way as always, but you may need to download the HBO Max app to get Max content like Friends. If you get HBO through AT&T TV, Comcast’s Xfinity TV or Flex Internet, DirecTV, AT&T U-verse, Spectrum, Altice, Suddenlink, Optimum, Cox Contour, Verizon Fios TV, or some smaller cable/broadband companies, you should also be able to use your login credentials from those companies for Max (after downloading the app). Comcast is also in the process of integrating Max into its Xfinity interface, which will allow users to search for Max content without switching to a separate app.
But as of now, there’s one big caveat: HBO Max has not done distribution deals with Roku or Amazon. If you subscribe to HBO through those companies, you do not get free access to Max (though you can still get classic HBO content). More problematic, if you use a Roku player or Amazon’s Fire TV devices to stream various apps — including HBO Go and HBO Now — you can’t even download the HBO Max app at all. Your HBO Now or HBO Go login technically gives you free access to Max, but only if you switch to an Apple TV player or Samsung TV, or if you have a PS4 or XBox One. (You can’t subscribe via the latter two platforms, but existing credentials will work.) HBO is still negotiating with Roku and Amazon, and we’ll update you if anything changes.
Is there a way to get HBO Max for free if I currently don’t have HBO?
Yes — if you’re an AT&T video, broadband, or cell phone customer (including DirecTV and AT&T TV). The company has already been offering free HBO to many of its customers, so you may already be getting HBO for free. Check your bill! But with the launch of Max, AT&T is expanding which customers get free access. In some cases, the free access is permanent; in others, it’s good for a year or three months. AT&T put out a full list of which customers are eligible for which freebies here. If you’re not eligible via one of these plans, give your AT&T provider a call anyway and ask if you can get free HBO Max. The entire company will be trying to sign up new Max customers these next few months, so there’s a good chance someone will give you a deal.
How do I actually watch HBO Max?
As noted above, the service’s content will be integrated into platforms such as Apple TV, and if you are a current HBO Now user, the app should upgrade to Max by itself. The HBO Max app will be available to download on the Apple app store, the Google Play store, and Samsung’s app store, as well as on the PS4 and Xbox One.
What if I don’t want all this extra stuff and just want to stream HBO shows? Can I still do that?
Yup, or so WarnerMedia reps tell us. HBO Go is certainly not going anywhere: Anyone who gets HBO via a linear cable provider can still use the app for HBO content. HBO Now is also still around for people who don’t have a platform that isn’t supported by Max, and for HBO die-hards who don’t want to see The Sopranos listed next to The Big Bang Theory. However, WarnerMedia says Now will update into Max for many folks automatically, so maybe if you like your Now, you might not be able to keep your Now. We’ll update this post as needed.
Do I need to live in the U.S. to watch HBO Max?
For now, yes. There are plans to distribute the platform globally, but for now, it’s an American thing. Though one bit of good news if you’re in Canada: HBO Max original series such as Love Life will stream on Crave.
Can I watch Friends on HBO Max?
Yes! If you now want to cancel Netflix, just click here.

Actually its the other way around. HBOGo is what you have if you subscribe to HBO via a Cable provider. HBONow is the standalone service. The apps for each are developed by two different entities. I'm thinking about moving my HBO from cable and going with HBOMAX especially since Xfinity been blocking HBOGo on Android TV for years. Now they are fucking up the HBOMAX Rollout.

HBO Max Boss On Why The Streaming Service Isn't On Roku Yet

We are now in an era where streaming services launch so frequently that it can be hard to keep track of them all, much less figure out which ones are worth your time and hard-earned dinero without at least giving them a shot long enough for a free trial to run out. If you have access to a platform that allows you to access these streamers in one place, the easiest solution is to just load them up with the appropriate apps and get your binge on. Unfortunately, when HBO Max went live toward the end of May, hopeful subscribers were not able to watch it on any Roku devices, and we now know why.

Tony Goncalves, the CEO of AT&T’s Otter Media division, which is the group that’s in charge of HBO Max, recently spoke to The Verge about the company's current impasse with Roku (as well as the one they have with Amazon right now), and it sounds like the reasoning behind it is a pretty simple one:
Being available on the platforms that consumers use to access these new networks is really, really important. There are certain business models that exist, and we each have our own. I just go back to the fact that we’re just... I think we’re just starting from a very, very different place. We have 30-plus million existing subscribers that have already gone in their pocket and voted to subscribe to a product, and we’re making that product better. We think the value prop is there. We just want to be treated fairly.
While Tony Goncalves wouldn't go into details on what kind of deal they were hoping to make with Roku or how long he believes it would take to get such a deal approved, it sounds a lot like the people at HBO Max felt like those at Roku weren't willing to partner in a way that took what they see as the value of the new streamer into account.

As he mentioned in his interview, HBO is already a very well known, loved, and respected property, and they already have many millions of subscribers. Goncalves, again, wouldn't get into specific numbers, but I'm sure several million of those current HBO subscribers upgraded to HBO Max, especially because, for most of those with HBO Now, their app updated automatically and they can access the new content without even paying anything extra.

It would seem that, right now, the offer on the table from Roku for HBO Max wasn't looking at the instant value that having that kind of potential subscriber base already intact would bring. To Goncalves, HBO is a brand people already trust, and HBO Max is simply an improvement on that brand which adds value, so any deal should reflect that. As he said, "We just want to be treated fairly."
While the situation between HBO Max and Roku seems to be at least a smidge contentious right now, Tony Goncalves has hope that this will change in the near future:
Disney+ and Netflix and Hulu and these other apps are on those platforms. There’s a certain business model that exists. We just want the same one. I’m hopeful that, ultimately, we’ll get there, and we’ll get there with the consumer in mind. But we just didn’t get there on Day 1.

HBO Max Sort Of Removes Gone With the Wind
By Charu Sinha
Photo: MGM/MGM
f513818cfa3c5914f506f0b1f3d7865c3f-gone-with-the-wind.rsquare.w330.png

HBO Max has removed Gone With the Wind from its catalogue… sort of. An HBO Max spokesperson confirmed that the streaming service removed the 1939 film in light of nationwide discussions around racism and prejudice, but “it will return with a discussion of its historical context.” The decision to take down the movie followed the publication of a Los Angeles Times op-ed fittingly titled “Hey, HBO, Gone With the Wind romanticizes the horrors of slavery. Take it off your platform for now.” In it, John Ridley, screenwriter of 12 Years a Slave and creator of the TV series American Crime, argues that Gone With the Wind “romanticizes the Confederacy in a way that continues to give legitimacy to the notion that the secessionist movement was something more, or better, or more noble than what it was — a bloody insurrection to maintain the “right” to own, sell and buy human beings.” Ridley called for Gone With the Wind to be taken down from HBO Max temporarily, and return to the streaming service “after a respectful amount of time (…) along with other films that give a more broad-based and complete picture of what slavery and the Confederacy truly were.”
HBO Max seems to have taken Ridley’s words into consideration, emphasizing in their statement that the movie would eventually return to the platform along with “an explanation and a denouncement” of its “racist depictions.” Read the full statement from HBO Max below:
Gone With The Wind is a product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society. These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible. These depictions are certainly counter to WarnerMedia’s values, so when we return the film to HBO Max, it will return with a discussion of its historical context and a denouncement of those very depictions, but will be presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. If we are to create a more just, equitable and inclusive future, we must first acknowledge and understand our history.

HBO is ending HBO Go, renaming HBO Now since HBO Max is live

HBO Max, which streams the full catalog of Game of Thrones, launched May 27.
HBO
HBO Max, when it arrived two weeks ago as an amped-up app to stream HBO with a lot of extra programming, also brought confusion about how the new streaming service fits in with the company's two existing apps.
To simplify matters, HBO's parent company -- AT&T's WarnerMedia -- said Friday that it will retire its HBO Go app as of July 31 now that the HBO Max app is "widely distributed." The HBO Now app will stay the same except it will be renamed simply HBO.

HBO Go is the network's first streaming app that lets regular HBO pay-TV subscribers watch over the internet. HBO Now is the channel's standalone streaming app that lets people subscribe to and stream HBO without any other pay TV bundles.
Read: RuPaul's Drag Race star D.J. 'Shangela' Pierce opens up about her HBO show We're Here
When the changes are complete, the company will have two streaming apps -- HBO Max and HBO -- rather than its current three.
STREAMING WAVE
But getting rid of HBO Go raises questions for people who rely on that app. The company's plan to sunset HBO Go is based on the premise that HBO Max is "widely distributed" as a replacement for it, but HBO Max is missing on crucial devices: Roku and Amazon's Fire TV. Roku or Amazon Fire TV together represent an eye-popping 70% of the streaming devices in the US.

WarnerMedia has so far failed to secure deals with Roku and Amazon to support HBO Max. Once HBO Go is retired, people who rely on HBO Go to stream HBO programming with a Roku or Fire TV won't have a simple app to do it. To watch on TVs, these HBO pay TV subscribers will need to watch HBO through their cable, satellite or other input, or through their pay TV operator's own app, if one exists.
"The large majority of HBO Go usage occurs on platforms with whom we have HBO Max deals currently in place," and HBO Max spokeswoman said. "While we don't yet have a distribution deal with Amazon or Roku, we remain committed to making HBO Max available on every platform possible to as many viewers as possible."
Roku declined to make any public statements on the matter. Amazon didn't respond to messages seeking comment.
Now playing: HBO Max: How to get it
4:24
HBO Max is one of the final entrants in the so-called streaming wars, a seven-month window when media giants and tech titans have been releasing a raft of new streaming services to take on Netflix. These competitive battles -- pitting rookies like HBO Max, Disney Plus and NBCUniversal's Peacock against heavyweights like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video -- have spurred huge corporations to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into the hope of shaping the future of television.

Dear Roku Customer,

As you may know, HBO made the decision to discontinue access to HBO GO on nearly all streaming platforms as of July 31, 2020. HBO GO enables cable subscribers to access HBO via the streaming platform of their choosing at no additional cost.

We are disappointed that HBO will no longer give its customers access to HBO GO - and that HBO is taking this action at a time when so many people are at home.

We believe providing an exceptional user experience is paramount and we have asked HBO to reconsider their decision. Unfortunately at this time they are still planning to shut down HBO GO.

Meanwhile our customers can still access HBO in a number of ways across our platform. Existing HBO users that subscribe through Comcast, Charter or AT&T TV can stream HBO on the Comcast Xfinity Stream, Spectrum TV and AT&T TV channels available on the Roku platform. Additionally, if you would like to continue to access HBO on Roku you may subscribe directly to HBO on The Roku Channel.

Roku

Warner Brothers shit the bed with this rollout. They had all this marketing letting people know HBO Max was live, but it wasn't available on the two major streaming platforms, Roku & Firestick, which account for like 70% of the marketshare. Even Samsung TV availability is spotty. Right now, the shit mainly works over phones, tablets, and PCs with a few exceptions for PS4s and Chromecasts. It's basically been a hassle for most people to even stream this shit over their TV and that doesn't take into account all of the brand confusion between HBO Go/Now/Max.

Moral of the story, everybody can't be Netflix. Disney+ went through some shit during their launch too. Everybody wants to enter the streaming market but nobody wants to take the time to get their shit together first.

Yeah, HBO Max has been a clusterfuck so far. I can't even get it yet on my FireTV and Firesticks.
