Why Historical Consciousness Is Your Most Powerful Defense in the Age of Erasure​

We are experiencing afrophobia on steroids.
What am I talking about?
Subscribed​
I'm talking about the perceived fear and hatred of the cultures and people of Africa as well as Africans in the diaspora.
It's all around you, if you're paying attention.
Afrophobia is the erasure of people, history, culture, and traditions.
It's been happening for hundreds of years, but right now in 2025, the erasure is on steroids and you better wake up. You better realize what time it is because what's happening right now is the tip of the iceberg.
You have no idea what's coming next year and the year after that.
It's going to be a relentless assault against your humanity, against everything that you thought was secure. The rug is going to be pulled out from under everybody.
And I'm here to give you a heads up.
We got a little reprieve in the spring of 2020 when the world witnessed the murder of George Floyd on camera. That courageous 18-year-old girl documented what we've been telling y'all for generations, and for a moment, it touched the hearts of people worldwide.
  • Concessions were made.
  • Politicians vowed to enact laws
  • Corporations promised to do better
But now?
They're reverting back to their old ways, and it's going to get worse.

How Afrophobia Shows Up in 2025​

Afrophobia is specific and strategic.
It shows up as:
  • Attacks on critical race theory
  • Opposition to African studies programs
  • Erasure of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
  • Removing acknowledgment of Black achievements
  • Revision of slavery history ("slavery gave Africans job skills")
For example, the military is no longer acknowledging the Tuskegee Airmen.
You never thought you'd see this happen, did you?
It's because you don't know history.
This day was always coming—it was simply a matter of time.
The forces behind this erasure understand something crucial that many of us have forgotten:
Consciousness is power, and to keep a people controlled, you must first control their state of awareness.

They Want You Asleep​

Dreams only happen when you're asleep.
But when you're awake—or "woke" as they call it—you have the presence of mind to see what they're doing. And if you have historical consciousness, you'll begin to push back.
Making America "great again" is about taking us back to 1860 before our liberation.
That's what the forces in the White House want to do. Be clear about what is happening right now, and understand it's not going to stop.
You can't pray your way out of this one, brothers and sisters, because Jesus ain't going to help you with this. You're going to have to rely on a different power—a power you've always had but your oppressor never told you existed.
This systematic approach to keeping us unaware and confused is a well-documented phenomenon with its own field of study.

Agnotology: The Science of Manufactured Ignorance​

There's a book called "Agnotology: The Making and Unmaking of Ignorance".

Agnotology is the study of culturally induced ignorance or doubt—particularly with the publication of inaccurate or misleading scientific data and the creation of institutions to promote disinformation, like certain television networks and publications.
These media outlets exist specifically to spew lies to confuse the general public—Black, white, they don't care. They're aiming for everybody.
This manufactured ignorance expresses itself throughout:
  • Media
  • Social institutions
  • Religious institutions
  • Political organizations
  • Educational institutions
Every aspect of life as we know it is infected with this illness.
So how do we engage in the unmaking of ignorance?
Years ago, I anticipated this moment would come.
I saw the patterns in history and recognized that we would need practical tools to navigate these treacherous waters.

What You Must Do: Survival Strategies for 2025​

My book "Survival Strategies for Africans in America" is a playbook for 2025.

I wrote this 29 years ago because I saw this coming. I outlined 13 steps to freedom—And freedom literally means freeing your mind, because the process begins there first.
If your freedom is legislated into existence, it can also be legislated out of existence.
Which is exactly what they're doing right now.
Let me share two critical strategies from this playbook that you must implement immediately if you hope to survive and thrive in these times.

Strategy #1: Understand the Root Problem​

Racism and white supremacy are the most persistent problems you will ever face throughout your entire life.
These are persistent problems that will never go away as long as someone else controls your destiny. You're going to have to figure out how to negotiate within this environment so you're not adversely affected.
I can't tell you how many friends of mine in DC have lost their jobs and are afraid of how they're going to pay their mortgage or put their children in school.
The racists don't care. And if you don't care, then game over.
You've got to care like never before.
Now that you understand the problem, you need to recognize how it spreads and infects our consciousness.
This brings us to perhaps the most crucial strategy of all.

Strategy #2: Control the Media That Controls Your Mind​

The media is the most powerful form of mental manipulation ever created.
It's destroying the minds of our young folk. We've had at least two generations whose minds have been destroyed by mindless consumption of content on YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook.
Dr. Jules Harrell, a psychologist at Howard University, said in the 1990s that so many young folk have spent so much time playing video games, and watching music videos that this unchecked consumption has literally rewired the neurons in their brain—making them:
  • Unable to read complex material
  • Struggling to reason through problems
  • Incapable of paying attention for more than 10-15 minutes
Who do I blame? I blame the parents. Absolutely. Because they're your children.
You brought them into the world, and you have a responsibility to see that they are properly educated before they leave the house.
The power of the media to shape consciousness isn't accidental—it's by design.
And this design has deep historical roots that connect directly to our African heritage, though that connection has been deliberately obscured.

Understanding Media's Historical Appropriation​

I've spent most of my career involved in one way or another with the media.
Did you know there are numerous theaters throughout the United States called the Egyptian Theater?
Every February they hold the Sundance Film Festival in a venue called the Egyptian Theater. The first theater where they had Hollywood premieres was called the Egyptian Theater.
This theater, built in 1922, is designed like an Egyptian temple.


Why?
Because the Egyptian temple was the place where minds were reformed and shaped.
The idea is to use this environment to rewire the thinking and consciousness of everybody who sits in these seats.
And it's not just the physical spaces that have been appropriated—our historical figures have been twisted and distorted as well, often turned into villains in popular culture when they should be celebrated as heroes.

Reclaiming Our Historical Narratives​

There has been dozens and dozens of films produced by Hollywood about the mummy.

But stop and think about that story.
Can you remember the name of the mummy? Imhotep.
And who is Imhotep?
Imhotep was the architect, the engineer, the world's first multi-genius, the man who built the step pyramid at Saqqara—a 19-story skyscraper.

The world's first multi-genius is an African man named Imhotep, and Hollywood has personified him as an evil figure.
That's intentional.
Understanding these historical distortions is only the first step. We must move beyond awareness into strategic action that hits them where it hurts most—their pocketbooks.

Take Economic Action Now​

We're past the point of marching.
As Dr. Clark used to say, "Marching is a serious waste of shoe leather."
You march with your pocketbook. You march with your wallet. The only thing these devils understand is money, and when you withhold your money, you will get their attention.
I'm not talking about withholding your money for one day.
You withhold your money for:
  • Memorial Day
  • The 4th of July
  • Juneteenth
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas
You hold your money because you're going to need it.
Eggs are over $10 a dozen. Gas is going up too. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
While economic action is crucial, we must simultaneously undertake the equally important work of reclaiming our narrative through intensive historical education—not just for a month, but as a daily practice.

Study Your History Daily​

Every day is a day that must be spent learning our history and culture.
You can't teach 300,000 years of African history in one month.
If they want to ban the teaching of Black history in our schools, then teach it in your homes and your churches!
We don't need anybody to validate us.
Carter G. Woodson was the second African-American to receive a PhD from Harvard, and he acknowledged that it took him 30 years to get Harvard out of his brain.
Woodson realized that he was miseducated, and he needed to re-educate himself. That's why he invented Negro History Week in 1926.

Woodson understood clearly that you don't just set aside one week to study your history.
You study your history 365 days a year for the rest of your life.
You teach it to your children every single day.
The power of knowing your history cannot be overstated.
It gives you the eyes to see hidden meanings and messages that others miss.
Learn From Black Panther's Hidden Messages
Ryan Coogler grew up in a family of conscious parents who were Black Panthers who studied history. They made sure their son knew his history.

Ryan Coogler had only done two films when Marvel approached him to direct Black Panther. With his third film, this young brother became the most successful Black filmmaker in history, making $1.3 billion.
What did he do with Disney's $150 million?
He remade the story of Asar and Set.

If you know your history, you can see it in the film.
Chad Boseman played the role of Heru, and his cousin Killmonger played the role of Set.
If you understand Nile Valley culture and civilization, you'll get a different impression of Black Panther.
Most folks missed it, but it's there if you know what to look for.
Ryan Coogler very strategically found a way to present liberating information in the film and hid it in plain sight.
But if you don't know your history and culture, it went right over your head.
As we conclude this journey together, I want to leave you with the most profound truth I've learned in my decades of study—a truth that connects us to our ancestors and to our ultimate purpose in this struggle.

You Are the Vessel for Your Ancestors​

I want to close with this powerful truth:
We are the vessels through which our ancestors breathe, speak, and do their best work.
When you pour libation to your ancestors, when you speak their names, you allow them to live again. This is the circle of life. This is what this whole thing is all about.
Your ancestors await your engagement.
The question is: what will you do with this knowledge?
Know yourself.
Love yourself.
Be the best example of the expression of the creator that this life has to offer.
I'm at a point in my life where I don't have time to play. I'm only dealing with people who are as serious as I am.
