Two Vick co-defendants sentenced

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Two of fallen NFL star Michael Vick's co-defendants were sentenced Friday to 18 months and 21 months in prison on federal dogfighting conspiracy charges.

Quanis Phillips of Atlanta and Purnell Peace of Virginia Beach could have received up to five years in prison -- the same maximum Vick faces when he is sentenced Dec. 10.

Peace, Phillips and Tony Taylor of Hampton pleaded guilty last summer and agreed to testify against Vick, prompting the suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback to enter his own plea agreement a few days later. Taylor will be sentenced Dec. 14.

"You may have thought this was sporting, but it was very callous and cruel," U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson told Phillips.

Sentencing guidelines called for punishments of 12 to 18 months for Peace and 18 to 24 months for Phillips, who has a more extensive criminal record.

Prosecutors recommended sentences at the low end of the range because of the co-defendants' cooperation. But Hudson said he felt sentences on the high end of the range were appropriate because of the nature of the crime.

Hudson told Peace that he was concerned because a pre-sentencing report quoted Peace as saying he saw he nothing wrong with dogfighting.

All four men also face state charges.

According to court papers, Vick financed virtually the entire "Bad Newz Kennels" dogfighting enterprise at his 15-acre property in Surry County in rural southeastern Virginia and participated in executing several underperforming dogs by drowning, hanging and other means.

Vick publicly apologized for his role in the dogfighting operation and turned himself in Nov. 19 to begin serving his prison term early. He is being held in a state jail in Warsaw, Va.

The case began in April when a drug investigation of a Vick relative led authorities to the Surry County property, where they found dozens of pit bulls and an assortment of dogfighting paraphernalia.

This judge is known for taking the hard-stance over his entire year. He delivers the max sentence in a lot of his decisions. He is definitely not the lenient type.
 
I really wanna know exactly how much money he made running that operation, and how much it compared to the MILLIONS he was making playing football.
 
Where you getting 3.5 - 5 years from. The dude with the extensive record will get 21 months, less than two.. Vick will be in the 6 to 18 month range, which is still alot of time though

one got 18months and the other 21 months - thats 1 yr 6mos and 1yr 9mos. I guess both had prior records too

18mos was the maximum Peace could have gotten

Phillips got 21 mos which was good considering he has the worst record and the judge could have given him between 18-24 mos

Peace got the maximum for his presentence stupidity saying he thought there was nothing wrong with dog fighting

Vick's weed thing could hurt him but the peta classes could help - I think he'll get 6months not sure of the sentencing guidleines
 
Hopefully, the judge will consider the fact that Vick has paid a substantial fine, unlike the other wretched idiots, and reduce Vick's time
 
Why you all busy debating about how much time the Fed Judge going to give him base on what is boys got, one key thing you forgetting since he already pled guilty whatever the judge come down with going to be double in reality b/c the state sitting back ready to piggyback on the Feds sentencing as a guideline for theirs. since he pled guilty he not going to be able to fight the state charges which means he going to have to turn around and plea guilty state charges which means more time on top of the Feds, regardless if he get out early for good behavior we still looking at min. 3yrs combined (FED and State)guaranteed!!

So he fucked, too much time away from the NFL, while the players today and coming only going to get better and skills intact, nobody would even waste thinking about giving him a chance....sadly so but he made is bed making millions he going to sleep in it losing millions:smh::smh:

Teflon? Man, have you been paying attention? The man gets nothing BUT the worst case scenario, every single time. "Teflon" guys don't get suspended indefinitely, lose several hundred million in contracts, and get sued every five days for money they ain't got. Teflon my ass.

Let's not forget the damn near unheard of double jeopardy he's in. State charges getting filed even after he copped a plea.

If Ricky Williams can take 3 seasons off and play again, I'm sure Vick can replicate this and play at the Qb position. Its just a matter of a team taking a gamble on him. And alot of people are telling me he'll only get a year. So it may only be two seasons off.

Who put up the money? The property was his.

If he wasnt the head guy why get everybody to roll on him, they could have took the plea and left him out, why snitch him out if he aint the head.

It was clear from day one he is who they wanted, he is the figurehead, and this cracka system will rape him.

They want to send a national message so when they start giving "hood ninjas" all the time for dogfighting they can justify it. They passed this law to lock us up, not to keep us out. Giving vick 24 months will send a message.
 
.....If Vick gets more than 18 months I'd be very surprised.....he's alrady loss millions,loss his prime years in the game, paid fines,publicly apologized and began serving his time early and he didn't have a past criminal record....I believe he spends a year in jail at most, with good behavior....expect the state charges to change once he gets sentenced by FEDS...state is only giving the people in that county a show of toughness....DEC. 2008, Vick should be getting out, if not sooner..there are people that do physical harm to women and kids that get less than 18-21 months in jail, Vick didn't hurt anyone but himself...give him a 18 mo-2 yr sentence, suspend it down to a year max, and if he violates the law in the future he goes back and does the MAX allowed....you lock up people that are a danger to society...Vick is not threatening to anyone....he's learned an expensive lesson, let him do his time and move on...Prisons are for violent people that can't control themselves...lock them away to protect society....

I doubt a team would take a gamble on him, if they did at best he would be a backup or 3rd string.

The MINIMUM that OOKIE can get is 12 months, based on his plea arrangement with prosecutors; OOKIE is very likely to get sentenced to 24 months, and HAVE TO SERVE at least 85 to 90% behind BARS!

He will miss at least 2 more FULL SEASONS; this is in line with MY ORIGINAL ESTIMATES that he would miss at least 3 FULL SEASONS!

1.Take 22 million away even though you played hard every year you were here,basically you played for next to free compare to pther franchise quarterbacks. Broken bones and all.
2. Wait till you plead guilty to toss state charges on you just so you have no hope of a short bid.
3. Make you pay 1 million dollar's to take care of 54 dogs. Roughly $20,000 each. Don't care if you got money to feed your family as long as the dogs are taken care of.
4. Spend more time and money trying to put you behind bars than try to find the murderer of Darrent Williams.

I am not a Vick fan but anyone that can justify this treatment over someone with a spotless criminal record has to be white. Period.
