I feel your log in name may create an inherent bias.

Genius? Hell no.

Production genius? Hell yes

Creative? Ridiculously so.

Genius in music art or fashion? No.

Production hell now.

Brotha, if we are talking song for song across all genres, Hell naaaaw. He don’t come close to the Neptunes, they shit goes back to SWV and Blackstreet days to working with The Rolling Stones, No Doubt, Britney Spears. Pharrell and Chad actually play instruments and read music.

Till this day I’ve yet to hear anything from Kanye that was genius worthy. Is he dope yes, does he make great music sometimes yes, but genius in music production naaahh.

Now Timbaland or Quincy Jones, those dudes are geniuses.

I understand and I actually don't really disagree

But there is an inherent subjectivity to art.

I seen videos of timbaland and Q in the studio Rick Rubin

And Ye.

And I have heard them speak on Ye and say he the real deal.

Are they lying? I don't know. But they and many others in the industry say the same.

And before his fuckery Kanye was one of my undisputed favorite artists of all time period.

Production rapping etc etc.

Neptunes? Genius status. I heard it seen it experienced it in real time

(Shout out to that brother Chad Hugo I see you)

From rump shaker to now

But genius gets thrown around so much I don't think we can take any of that seriously.

Kyle Shanahan is a genius?

So what is Bill Walsh?

I'm OK with all that genius talk as long as we keep the context straight.

Mind you I started this thread...

That is a great point. I’m not doubting Kanye’s skills because Hell of A Life is one my favorite songs from him. But like you said ppl are throwing the word genius around too frivolously. That’s why I always respected Just Blaze he admitted he was a great drum programmer and sampler, but if you asked him to play Jay-Z’s Show Me What You Got on a 8-piece drum-set he would tell you he can’t do that. Even Pharrell (who actually plays the drums and some piano) admitted he could not have made nowhere near the type and quality of songs w/o Chad Hugo (who plays saxophone, piano, guitar, and bass guitar).

That’s fire you were in the studio with the Neptunes when they were creating. I remember watching the Justified documentary and watching them create the chords, bridges, etc was crazy.

Pharrell the individual/entertainer is not better than Kanye but Neptunes as a whole and what they've contributed to music (especially hip hop)>>>Kanye.

With that said, you're absolutley selling Kanye short. As a combo rapper & producer there's a short list close to his resume.

Also as you mentioned, Chad doesn't really get the credit he deserves. There is no Neptunes without Chad.

3. "She was seventeen but she was sexy" ...Rick James had some pedo lyrics
Sam Cooke "She was only 16", KRSONE "13 and Good" Prince I forgot his song. and those are just the hip hop and R & B artists I can remember. The music industry itself has always had a pedo problem. Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, Mick Jagger, Marvin Gaye, Ted Nugent have all from what I can recall have "groomed" somebody but R. Kelly is the poster child.

People believe that talent is a gift bestowed by the gods on some lucky individual destined for greatness.

That's bullshit.

Talent is nothing more than the intersection between love and purpose.

Suppose you're 10 years old and someone hands you a violin. You discover that rubbing a bow against those strings makes time disappear and all your problems go away. When you put the violin down the problems come back, but they're never quite as bad as they were before you picked it up.

This prompts you to play that violin for hours at a time. Even if you're terrible at it.

By the time you're 16 you've gotten pretty good. Suddenly it occurs to you

I'm broke, why don't I take this violin to the train station and start busking?

I'm lonely, why don't I join a classical music trio?

I'm unpopular. Why don't I audition for this cool band that needs a violinist?

I'm bored. Why don't I join an orchestra and tour the world?

Now you're playing even when it's not fun. Learning extra skills like music theory and sight reading. Rehearsing songs that you never would have even considered listening to before.

Then, when you and your violin achieve something worth celebrating you step off stage and people say

"Damn, I wish I had your talent."

Try not to roll your eyes when it happens.

Elon Musk will make Twitter profitable in the long run. I’m reading the takeover thread and a couple things standout.
1. People are literally predicting the demise of Twitter on Twitter. Engagement is UP since he took over. UP! Lol

2. If firing 75% of the work force didn’t cripple the company then what would? To me that means Twitter major overhead/operational costs were the employees. So if Elon can keep the operation costs covered he can layout whatever plan to monetize.

3. Based on the number of Twitter’s user base vs their monetization it was/has been severely untapped and that’s what people have been saying for years.

4. Lastly back to my first point. Advertisers are down, but usership is not. People talk a lot of cash shit online about leaving Twitter (on Twitter of all places  ). There’s more tweets posted on the takeover thread than from any other platform. It shows people are full of shit and if the platform
has utility then Elon could resurrect Hitler and give him a blue check and people would still be there. Advertisers fake these plays to gauge the level of outrage, but if you’re trying to sell something online and you skip over billions of users on a platform to make a statement then it’s real retarded in the long run.

Just my two cents. Oh yeah get that Tesla stock while it’s cheap. This new semi is about to flip the trucking industry on its head. Mark my words. :itsawrap:

No one is leaving twitter because there's no other platform (to my knowledge) that's it competition...everyone is already on IG, Facebook, tiktok etc... there's nowhere to migrate too if you hate twitter. Trump tried it and failed. And that fucker got over 70 million votes and couldn't pick up 70 million users...which would have made his platform viable.

But hey..MySpace was the shit until Facebook came along. And vine was cool for a hot second. Eventually some new platform will unseat twitter.

I agree, but for completely different reasons.

A big part of Musk's Fortune came through crypto trolling on twitter. He bought a stash of tokens, tweeted that it was going "to the Moon", allowed his customers to buy a spot in line for the next Tesla with these tokens. Then, when the bubble expanded as far as it would go he sold the whole stash.

Musk doesn't need Twitter to be profitable. All he has to do is keep the doors open until crypto is popular. If he can make at least $45 billion by trolling then it doesn't matter if Twitter goes under or not.

It's also worth noting that Eli Lilly stock fell by 10% when somebody impersonated them on Twitter and made tweets about free insulin. I wouldn't put it past Musk to impersonate these accounts himself so that he can buy companies stock on the cheap.

After all, most of his firings were content moderation and security staff. The people in charge of keeping these accounts from being faked in the first place. That way, if the feds investigate him he can blame it on a security breach. It would destroy the platform, but it doesn't matter. By the time the stock rebounds he can sell it for more than enough to cover the loss and lawsuits.

I don't know whether or not this will work in the end, but I believe that's his true intentions.

Good point!

Everyone knows Kanye was a struggling producer. One of many in a very crowded field. Then in 2002 he gets into a near fatal car accident, "records through the wire", and the rest is history.

But what if that car crash had been fatal. Would Kanye still be considered a genius?

IMO, despite having 10 years in the game by that point, he would have been considered a solid producer with some decent tracks, but that's about it. Nobody would have been throwing the g-word around like they do today.

I used to DJ in a strip club and you are absolutely right!

The day before I quit there was a staff meeting where the manager spent nearly an hour teaching the dancers tricks and techniques to get more money.

It included things like encouraging guests to order champagne instead of liquor because there was a higher markup. Teaching them how to fake taking a drink so they could stay sober ish while still encouraging the guest to buy more alcohol. You never wanted to start with shots because then they might get so drunk that they leave early with the money still in their pocket.

He taught them techniques to start conversations with quiet guests. The intention was to get them to buy a private dance at $600 an hour.

The strippers that made the most money were not the most beautiful. They were the ones with the best mouthpiece. In fact, the biggest earners were lon the pudgy side. They started their sets in a one piece while everyone else wore lingerie and bikinis.

About 6 months ago they hired a good friend of mine to be a "House mom". She does the dancers make up, make sure they stay sober enough to work, and always pushes them to hustle harder. She is worth her weight in gold!

This club averages nearly $100,000 a week and that's not even including liquor sales.

I looked into it a bit in the most notable thing that I found was that his parents bought him a sampler when he was 15. That would have been 1992.

Back then even the cheapest used sampler would have been at least $1,000 (or $2,100 in today's money). At that point hip hop wasn't nearly as popular as it is now and the only successful rappers from the Midwest, let alone Chicago, was Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.

Kanye's family either took an enormous leap of faith or they had enough disposable income that spending $2,000 on a kid that's not even old enough to drive wouldn't hurt that much.

That alone gave him a significant advantage over other producers trying to get in the game. Without that he might have had to finish college.

My conclusion is that Kanye West is not a genius.

He was an aspiring musician from an upper middle class family who kept plugging away until he found something that worked. It only seems like genius because he's been at it so long that it looks effortless.

The big problem is that once someone gets tagged with that genius label people start pretending that all of their decisions are smart. Even worse, Kanye started believing his own hype.

Forget mental illness and self-hatred. I believe that this is the biggest reason why Kanye turned into a parody.

I'm not upset about genius because I know it's not literal

But I can see genius in sports art dance rap even posting on bgol and tiktok

I think exceptionalism vision creativity work ethic determination execution fearlessness ALL on a grand scale does go into the genius realm

There is such a thing as evil genius too

Eh, I don’t think he needs to buy the platform to influence the cryptocurrency market. After Doge mooned by him just mentioning it. Any crypto he mentions would do the same if he really wanted to manipulate and take advantage of that. In the financial space he’s working in motivation for money is not what people think it is. I mean $100B dollars can’t even be comprehended by the average person. Jeff Bezos is the other person in the same financial space. Again if you look at the play they don’t need the money they want the control and influence which why Bezos bought the Washington Post. As we see Twitter was being selective in who they band and for whatever reasons they decide was relevant.. When Trump and Alex got kicked it did effect them a lot and Elon is pretty outspoken as well. This was just a play to control his narrative on the platform he utilizes the most. I don’t think he’s worried about profit in the short term. As long as he keeps his ability to influence his followers. Twitter can maintain as they are and break even for the foreseeable future.

Kanye was not the first rapper/producer by a long shot. "Through the wire" came out 10 years after "The Chronic". Hell, it came out 2 years after Afroman wrote and produced "because I got high."

As for Quincy Jones, back in the day he wrote an intro to a book about Tupac. He claimed, in his own words, that if he had been killed at 25 years old he would have been just another unknown up and coming jazz musician.

Now Mr Jones has had a phenomenal career with an unbelievable track record. However, I have a feeling that he doesn't even consider himself a genius.

In my opinion, genius is like talent. It comes at the intersection of love and purpose. Love is the engine that drives you to keep working at your craft. Purpose is the wheel that steers it in the right direction. Keep at it long enough and eventually you will get so good and so successful that people call you a genius.
