No they taught us to do what's inside the parentheses first, then what's outside the parentheses next.

So you have 2+1 inside the parentheses which is 3
6 divided by 2 outside the parentheses which is 3
Then 3 (3) which is 9

But since the calculators can't agree I don't know whats right

Instead of "what's inside the parentheses first" complete the parentheses first. (2+1) = (3)2=6 ÷ 6 = 1. It's not what's inside the parentheses first, it's work the parentheses first until they are complete/gone.
