Who could replace Joe Biden after disastrous presidential debate?

Diana Glebova
A number of Democrats could potentially be chosen to replace President Biden after he sparked alarm over his mental state at Thursday’s presidential debate.

Even those close to the 81-year-old president have publicly expressed concern over his performance against Donald Trump based on Biden’s mumblings, freezes, facial expressions, cough and sometimes incoherent arguments.

With a little more than four months to go before the election, the Democratic Party’s situation is largely dependent on whether Biden decides to remain in the election, if his pledged delegates stay loyal to him at the Democratic National Convention in August, and if the Democratic National Committee decides to rewrite its convention rules.

A handful of high-profile Democrats could rise to the top and be chosen as the Democratic nominee, depending on those answers, even though the process would be extremely ardous.

The president’s campaign has stressed that he’s still running. But if Biden did decide to step down, he could not simply choose his successor. It would be up to the DNC to elect a new presidential and vice presidential ticket.

Names leading the pack include Vice President Kamala Harris, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and former first lady Michelle Obama.

But there could be many more possibilities.

A recent Politico poll found that a plurality of voters, 21%, thought Harris should be the 2028 candidate. Another 10% said the same about Newsom and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, while an overwhelming 41% said they didn’t know who would be best to replace Biden in the next election.

Kamala Harris

Harris, 59, might be considered a decent choice because of her proximity to Biden and his platform — if only she wasn’t plagued by underwater approval ratings.

The former California attorney general is currently averaging a dismal 39.4% disapproval rating, according to FiveThirtyEight.

And despite the Politico poll showing she was a top pick for 2028, only 34% told the outlet they thought Harris was “very likely” or “somewhat likely” to win the general election, while 57% said it was either “not too likely” or “not likely at all.”

Harris’s critics have included Kathleen Parker, the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for the liberal Washington Post who earlier this month called for Hillary Clinton to replace the veep on the Dem ticket because of the vice president’s “competency, or lack thereof.”

Harris’ odds of being the party’s presidential nominee increased 900 points after Thursday’s debate, while Biden’s went down 250 points, according to BetOnline.

Gavin Newsom

The California governor, 56, has been one of Biden’s most vocal surrogates in the 2024 election, even showing up at Republican primary debates to stump for the president.

Newsom was also Biden’s top ally in the post-debate spin room involving the press, showing up hours before the showdown to stress Democratic talking points.

After the debate, Newsom told MSNBC that the “panic” over Biden’s performance was “unnecessary” and that “we gotta have the back of this president.”

He said he intends to “step up” for the president and not focus on the debate.

Too bad his own state is in a shambles.

The governor has overseen an infamous epidemic of crime, homelessness and drug use in the Sunshine State, not to mention a flood of illegal border crossings and one of the nation’s highest unemployment rates.

People have reportedly been fleeing the state in droves, including comedian and podcast host Adam Carolla, who recently said life in Los Angeles had become unbearable while blasting Newsom as “sociopathic,” a “narcissistic douchebag” and “slippery eel of nothingness.”

Newsom’s betting odds of becoming the Dem presidential nominee increased after the debate, with his chances improving by 300 points, according to BetOnline.

Michelle Obama

The former first lady, 60, has largely stayed out of politics since she and former President Barack Obama left the White House in 2016.

And even the struggles of her husband’s former veep, Biden, haven’t been enough to drag her back in — although reportedly for more personal reasons.

The ex-White House matriarch does not want to publicly campaign for Biden’s re-election partly because of how his family treated Kathleen Buhle, her close pal, in the wake of Buhle’s nasty divorce from first son Hunter Biden, Axios reported this week.

But her reluctance to step back into the political limelight that hasn’t stopped Democrats from backing her odds as the Dems’ next presidential nomiee.

Her odds increased by 850 points after the debate on BetOnline.

JB Pritzker

Pritzker, 59, would likely have the easiest time running at this point — but only because of his billionaire net worth as an heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune, which would ease his ability to reach voters in a short time by potentially self-funding his campaign, according to Dennis Lennox, a Republican strategist and expert on convention rules.

“Procedurally, a contested convention — regardless of whether they reject or amend the proposed rules or suspend the rules — is straightforward and easy to bring about, though it would almost certainly unravel into a civil war between the disparate interests that make up today’s Democratic Party,” Lennox told The Post.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker’s billions wouldn’t hurt his presidential campaign if it came to that, experts say. ZUMAPRESS.com
“The convention host, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, is the obvious choice. He doesn’t have the baggage of Vice President Kamala Harris or California’s governor, Gavin Newsom. Plus, the billionaire can self-fund overnight and buy the nomination, thereby averting a civil war on the floor of the convention,” he added.

“Of course, if you’re Newsom, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore or Josh Shapiro, the Pennsylvania governor, you can’t self-fund. So you stick with Biden. While he loses to Trump, you remain viable for the 2028 campaign that begins the day after November,” the GOP expert said.

But Pritzker brings plenty of other baggage.

In 2023, he signed into law a controversial measure that entirely eliminated cash bail in the state, instead leaving it up to judges whether to free suspects.

His family also has reportedly dumped millions of dollars into transgender causes that critics say encourage youth questioning their gender to undergo surgery or take transition blockers without going through proper guidance.

As governor, he passed a sex-ed bill, too, that follows curriculum teaching 5-year-olds about “gender identity” and 8-year-olds about hormone blockers to prevent puberty in preteens.

Pritzker’s odds to become the nominee on BetOnline jumped by 7,500 points.

Gretchen Whitmer

The Michigan governor, 52 — infamously known for her COVID-era shutdown on businesses and schools in the state — has quickly risen in the ranks of known Democratic leaders.

She is often mentioned in online discourse about who could possibly step in for Biden and launched a national political group last year to boost her name recognition.

Whitmer, Harris, Newsom and Pritzker have not publicly expressed any interest in running against Biden and maintained support for him after the debate.

Whitmer’s chances at becoming the nominee increased by 1,800 on BetOnline post-debate.

Meanwhile, Trump’s closest allies stressed after the debate that Biden is the nominee and disputed claims he could be replaced.

Lara Trump, the Republican National Committee co-chair, said GOP leaders “hope” Biden is present for the second debate set for Sep. 10 so voters can have more opportunities “to compare these two candidates.”

Neurosurgeon and former 2016 GOP presidential primary candidate Dr. Ben Carson said, “If I had done this poorly, I would want to redeem myself” in a second debate.

“But by the same token, I would be afraid that I was going to make it worse,” he told The Post.

Upstate Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) said, “Look, Joe Biden is on the ballot this November.

“We will defeat Joe Biden. Democrats are getting desperate because they know what a disaster that was.”

Top Trump adviser Chris LaCivita also poured cold water on the possibility of a Biden replacement, saying, “The only way that happens is if Joe Biden himself voluntarily takes himself out of it,” adding he “hopes” Biden will be there at the Sept. 10 debate.

Biden’s campaign said “no” to an inquiry from The Post on whether Biden is considering dropping out.

Alexander Hamilton wrote the following:

Between the commencement and termination of such a [four-year] period, there would always be a considerable interval, in which the prospect of annihilation would be sufficiently remote, not to have an improper effect upon the conduct of a man endued with a tolerable portion of fortitude. . . . [A] duration of four years will contribute to the firmness of the Executive in a sufficient degree to render it a very valuable ingredient in the composition; so, on the other, it is not enough to justify any alarm for the public liberty.

These rigged eight year presidential terms where a sitting President is unchallenged for his second term is a threat to public liberty. The Democrats should have ran these people as challengers during the primary. I can attest to the threat of public liberty when their period of time in office is eight years.

The clock resets after four years and you go through the process again with a legitimate primary than you face your political rival later. This looks like a dictatorship with secret police getting 99% of the vote. Why were these people afraid to challenge him in a primary, was Biden going to disappear Whitmer or Newsom?

image.jpg

They did not see a problem with longer terms as a governor because it was over a state but wanted a four year period for the President due to the immense power of the executive magistrate.

Are people truly aware of how challenging it is to replace a presidential candidate this late in the process? Their best bet is to stick with Joe or, on a specific day in August, have a national open election and allow the Democrats to select a new candidate.

My Unc sent my family this tonight. He's extremely insightful for reasons I won't name. I started to ask him to elaborate but I didn't.

Good evening family, there he go again! Don't want to scare you, just want us to be sure that WE are awake. Donald Trump said that the Mexicans are coming here and taking our (black people) jobs. That is what he and all of his followers believe. Brown people work hard and what they do cannot be minimized, my parents and grand parents used to work those jobs and many of us could take a page out of that book. My job as an uncle is to be repetitive. A wise man once told me " It is not about how much you make, it is what you do with what you make." STOP borrowing from the company store. DT and his followers are coming to restore the confederacy. Will you have enough saved to maintain your freedom or will you have to climb up on the truck when they come for you? They ARE coming, rest assured.

Come on y'all. We live in a world where regardless of how qualified a woman is there is a very large faction of white men in particular who would refuse to vote for a woman over the devil himself. They're just self-destructive these people are

At this point, only a white man can beat Donald Trump. I say that because we can't possibly have Obama again, and Michelle Obama is not coming to anybody's rescue. She's paid her dues. One could argue she never wanted it in the first place

We need Joe Biden to live until at least November 6th. After that he could keel the fuck over and I won't care

The NY Post is owned by Rupert Murdoch and has little to zero serious credibility. Having said that, at this point, I don’t think anyone in the current Democratic field could replace Biden at this point. Most of us who voted for Biden were voting against Trump and that still stands.

I am voting for an administration. I am voting for federal and Supreme Court judges who respect the rights of all Americans. I am voting to save Democracy. I am voting for the environment. I am voting for reproductive freedom. I will be voting for Joe Biden, the candidate who is running for America instead of the candidate running away from 34 felony convictions and even more pending criminal charges.

Nobody is replacing Joe Biden apparently people thought he did not too good that debate, but now people are realizing how much Trump is a real danger and a liar. Black people who was on the edge, got a kick in the head from this debate and it falling back in line with the Democrats. Trump lied so much that it overshadowed Joseph Biden issues at the beginning of the debate. Trump really think people are so stupid that he could bullshit his way out of a paper bag, but people are now starting to pay attention. Also Black people are beginning to realize hey if Joe Biden win next year and he steps down, we will have Kamala Harris as president.

Why was the debate "disastrous" for Biden?
because he behaved like a 82 year old man....

its bad enough our elected officials live in an alternate reality

but the fact we dont recognize that MOST of the media companies push the SAME narrative ( ohNOes the Dems are panicking / Biden needs to be replaced ) because MANY of them are big conservative ( ie republican party ) doners ...should wake a lot of people up....

but our own electorate wants to live in an alternate reality where 90days before a Major election somehow people want to swap out the candidate running against a lying dictatorial rich bigot from Queens who wants to use the govt to attack his enemies and take the country to an imaginary promised land of white people world .....

EXACTLY

The ones saying Biden should be replaced about 90 days before the election date because he stuttered a lil at an inconsequential debate, are folks who where never going to vote for Biden in the 1st place. And of course, ratings-hungry mainstream media that gives Trump a pass with ZERO fact-checking during the live debate and weak "moderators".

Regarding the thread topic, the list is basically fantasy football. Unrealistic.

On a side note, not sure why folks keep bringing up Michelle Obama's name. She's not even interested.
