The avenging boyfriend stabbed to death by a store worker he confronted in a Harlem bodega was a loving father who put his family first, relatives said Friday.
Austin Simon didn’t go into the Blue Moon bodega looking for trouble, his family asserted. Simon, 34, and the worker, Jose Alba, could have resolved their dispute without any bloodshed.
But within moments, Simon was mortally wounded, stabbed to death in a caught-on-camera clash that has even the mayor taking sides.
Still, Simon’s ex-wife said the viral security camera video that shows Alba holding the bloody knife doesn’t tell the whole story.
“He’s not the monster that they’re trying to make him seem like,” said Simon’s ex-wife, Tiana, 32, who did not want her last named used to protect herself from the public outcry over the case. “Everyone is judging him on a clip of video.”
Simon was killed July 1 when he confronted Alba over a bag of chips that his girlfriend had tried to buy for her daughter. The girlfriend said Alba snatched the snack from her 10-year-old daughter’s hand, according to a criminal complaint.
When the benefits card she tried to use for the purchase was denied, she told Simon, who went behind the counter where Alba, 51, was working.

In the video, Simon, who does not have a weapon, is seen pushing Alba to a chair behind the counter and towering over him while screaming in his face.
After speaking to someone on the other side of the counter, Simon then grabs Alba by the neck. Alba allegedly plunged a blade into Simon’s neck at least five times.
Supporters, including Mayor Adams, said Alba was just trying to defend himself. Alba was slashed twice on his arm, allegedly by Simon’s girlfriend, during the skirmish.
“What I saw on the video was a New Yorker doing his job,” Adams said. “That disruption of the job happened because someone was aggressive.”
Tiana, the victim’s ex-wife, disagreed.
“Personally, I don’t feel like it was self defense,” she said. “He stabbed him multiple times. That was overkill. Self defense for a push? You got pushed, you’re sitting there, going back and forth with words. He just was trying to make him apologize to the little girl.”

Tiana said she and her ex had grown up together and had known each other since they were children. She said their split was simply the result of drifting apart — and that Simon cared about each of his nine children.
“Honestly, he was a great person,” she said. “When he loves people he loves hard.”
Alba posted bond Thursday after prosecutors requested a lower bail package. He was initially held on a $250,000 cash bail after he was charged in the knifing death.
After talks with Alba’s defense counsel, prosecutors agreed to knock his bail down to $50,000, a decision that did not sit well with Simon’s family.
“He was more concerned that [Alba] snatched the chips from a little girl,” said Danisha Simon, 24, Simon’s niece.
“You don’t do that to people’s children. People really don’t understand the real story. Everyone is saying it’s over a bag of chips. He died the way he went through life. You don’t disrespect women, or children.”
Simon’s cousin, Candra Simon, lays the blame for the fight at the feet of Simon’s girlfriend.
“What happened to my cousin and Alba started with her,” the cousin charged. “After not being able to pay for whatever with her card, she went and got my cousin involved.”
Relatives said Simon had a rough upbringing, but overcame it to be a devoted father and family man.
“He had a past,” Candra Simon said. “Everyone has a past. That does not mean he deserved to die like that.”
She also noted there’ve been tensions between Dominican and Black communities in the neighborhood that played a part in the conflict as well.
“No one will talk about the tension between the Black and Brown community in Harlem, how deli owners at times disrespect the men and women who grew up in those communities,” she said.
