He goes on ... "The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home. I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken."
And there's more ...“I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film. So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the board deems appropriate."
He concludes by saying ... “Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason.”

The biggest reason is because it was SOOOOO misdirected. It would be different if Chris was really being an asshole, but he wasn't. If they were real true blue friends, Will would not have never done that. I doubt they will even be "Hollywood" friends anymore. For what?!!They will be friends again.....but not like before, that slap changed a lot of shit.

Nah. I don't think they should do that. I've enjoyed his movies, yet never really been a fan of his. That said, he has played some strong roles in a number of really good films for many years. In a way, yeah. Also, it saves him the disgrace of having a whole new news cycle a few weeks from now of people talking about the punishment, which would further damage his career and reputation. So this is damage control(?).
I still don't know what this all would mean in terms of his acting roles in films being able to get Oscar consideration or his being able to get quality future roles or what. Not yet sure if what he did was a wise move in the long run. He's not perfect and he fucked up. Badly. He acknowledged and owned up to his fuck up. I hope he's able to keep going and still have a successful career.
