Kinda like Degrasse High... And it was a success
I was on my high horse with a number of cats at my job about this recently.
It's like the ONLY shows with predominately Black casts that get any notice are "THE WIRE" and now "ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK". Shows that primarily deal within a crime and prison framework.
This shit burns me so much. Because it was like after shows like "A DIFFERENT WORLD", "LIVING SINGLE", "ROC", etc...the idea of a mulit-layered Black Experience changed. And became geared more towards criminality and ignorant shit. A singular experience.
Shit. Even I was screaming and jumping up and down like a little girl and shit when Dwayne jumped that altar for Whitley. That shows the emotional impact of that show. And characters that still resonate.
"A DIFFERENT WORLD" displayed many aspects of the Black Experience.

Im a 80s baby...so i grew up on Cosby, Different Strokes. Different World. etc.
That show had a lot of memorable shows; "Lesson learning" shows.
I truly believe Sinbad when he said that show was actually more popular than the Cosby show at one point.
I'd support it in a heartbeat.

Change the idea to a petition rather than a kickstarter campaign and you're good to go. Cosby and his related production partners still own the rights to the show and any spin-offs/revivals. The most we can do is campaign to bring it back in an updated form but we can't put money down to create that new show.
Hollywood loves to re-hash old ideas so why not this one? It was a great show that employed a lot of Black talent in front and in particular behind the camera. I'm all for getting it going again. Degrassi has been on in some form since we were kids and they do a great job of breathing life into it.

cosby is toxic at this point and his affiliation with the show may have doomed any serious consideration by a network or cable station...

A Different World 2017 would be a radical departure from the original show. No doubt this new show would focus on and be geared towards: LGBQT characters, SJW's, interracial couples & attracting a "Wider/Whiter audience".
Let's face it; these days, those particular groups are now the target demographics that network shows seem to be marketed towards.
My advice:
Enjoy the original show for what it was, but let it go and move on 'cuz a new version of it (even if it involves the original cast) is sure to disappoint and even piss off hardcore fans...

Mortal sin, New York Undercover can use the "music rights fees" excuse because it's legitimate..
There is no reason for a show that that inspired millions to go to HBCUs and helped create an era not be on DVD... Streaming services do not count.
