FDA authorizes first Covid-19 breath test
(CNN)The US Food and Drug Administration has granted emergency use authorization to the first Covid-19 test that spots chemical compounds associated with the coronavirus in breath, the agency said Thursday.
The InspectIR Covid-19 Breathalyzer can be used in medical offices and mobile testing sites.
The FDA said the InspectIR Covid-19 Breathalyzer, which is about the size of a piece of carry-on luggage, can be used in medical offices and mobile testing sites. It can give results in less than three minutes.
The system separates and identifies chemical mixtures to detect five compounds associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection.
A study of the InspectIR Breathalyzer found that it accurately identified more than 91% of positive samples and nearly 100% of negative samples. Similar sensitivity was found in another study that focused on the Omicron coronavirus variant. However, a positive result should be confirmed with a PCR test, the FDA said.
"It's another tool, and the FDA announcement suggests it's reasonably accurate and a relatively user-friendly tool," Dr. Emily Volk, president of the College of American Pathologists, a board-certified anatomic and clinical pathologist, said Friday.
"It waits to be seen how widely this will be adopted," Volk said. "That could rely on how expensive it is."
In an email to CNN on Friday, InspectIR Systems said it is not releasing the price of the machine or when it will be available.
The agency's authorization "is yet another example of the rapid innovation occurring with diagnostic tests for COVID-19," Dr. Jeff Shuren, director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, said in a statement. "The FDA continues to support the development of novel COVID-19 tests with the goal of advancing technologies that can help address the current pandemic and better position the U.S. for the next public health emergency."

BA.2.12 and BA.2.12.1 have sublineages to BA.1, better known as omicron. They've been detected in more than 40 other countries and in more than 30 states across the USA.
In central New York, the subvariants have accounted for 70% of new cases in March.
"We are alerting the public to two Omicron subvariants, newly emerged and rapidly spreading in upstate New York, so New Yorkers can act swiftly," State Health Commissioner Mary T. Bassett said in a statement.
"While these subvariants are new, the tools to combat them are not. ... Get fully vaccinated and boosted, test following exposure, symptoms, or travel, consider wearing a mask in public indoor spaces, and consult with your healthcare provider about treatment if you test positive."
How serious are the subvariants?
Health officials from the CDC said the new viruses do not appear to cause more severe disease than earlier variants.
What's of most concern is how contagious and rapid the new viruses are spreading, with a growth advantage of 25% over BA.2 by comparison. There is no data to determine whether the growth comes as a result of being more contagious than any other variant or whether it evades the body's immune defenses better. The spreading is still not at the rate of omicron in the winter but mirrors that of the delta variant wave in the summer and fall.

This past week I been running between Ft. Collins, CO and Albuquerque, NM helping out cuz we are short drivers in that area.
It was interesting being in the Denver, CO area seeing folks wearing masks indoors. I saw folks in the Denver and Colorado Springs areas walking around on the sidewalk wearing masks. Even saw people in their cars with fellow passengers wearing masks. The bus transit systems in Denver have on the front monitor saying masks required to board and the drivers were wearing masks. Denvers light rail system requires mask also.
But when you got into the rural areas south of Pueblo, Co and north of Sante Fe, NM, those areas are Trump country so it wasn’t unusual seeing mofos wandering around like it was open range not wearing masks or following safety protocols.
