Your comedy special Mount Rushmore?

Not comedians but specific specials.

My list:

1. You Are All Diseased- George Carlin

Carlin's many specials are almost all great and can blend together but they stand out in my memory for the big closing routine in each. 1996's Back in Town was a close second for the very strong "Why I Don't Vote" piece but You Are All Diseased's "American Bullshit" and "There Is No God" closing are peak Carlin.

2. Killin' Them Softly- Dave Chappelle

PePe Le Pew teaching kids "sometimes you just have to take the pussy," Sesame Street, being left alone in a limousine outside a busy crack house. His recent Netflix specials were deeper and the specific routines are easier to describe-- Me Too, transgenderism, etc-- but this is probably the flat-out funniest hour of comedy IMO.

3. Oh My God- Louis C.K.

All of his specials are great IMO but the exploration of the undiscussed aspects of the human psyche may have been best here. "If Murder Was Legal" highlighted this best from my recollection. And "Of course... But Maybe"-- going after the American soldier, the most sacred of figures in American life-- is incredibly bold, even before the transition to slavery. Probably the most daring of today's highest profile comedians.

4. Bigger & Blacker- Chris Rock

"Go take care of those kids before they rob me in ten years... If you said more word to him besides 'Mommy be back,' he might know something!" I was never in sync with how conservative Chris was/is but the boldness and creativity of his hot takes was something special. My favorite part of this special was about the reverence for mothers and lack of appreciation for fathers ("What the father song? Poppa was a Rolling Stone!"), who were lucky just to have the big piece of chicken saved for them.

Agree with all except Louis C.K. I can think of many comedians past and present who are waaaay funnier than he. :hmm:

I can't take a list like this seriously if Eddie Murphy Raw is not on here.

And for the record: Chewed Up is Louis CK's best special

Did you see Raw at the time or later? I don't think Eddie's stand-up aged well. I'm a big fan of his movies but I first saw his comedy specials maybe five years ago and was not impressed at all with either.

I haven't watched CK's specials in a while and they blur together a bit, so I was less confident in picking that as his best work than I was the others.

Also, I don't take criticisms of how serious lists of four should be from people who don't contribute better lists. :hmm:

How could you not include Richard Pryor??? That's a sacrilege. :hmm:

His last special was 1983! And I've seen a couple and they don't make the cut. Like with sports, the newer generations have improved.

I see the argument for The Coli over BGOL with this, as far as the criticism that BGOL is too old. I usually prefer the older crowd but you all are off your meds today.

And the subject is YOUR COMEDY SPECIAL MOUNT RUSHMORE. Not "My list is the definitive one." Bunch of non-comedy heads want to critique but can't even name a fucking special. :smh:

You come across as delusional, arrogant and a bit coonish. Not many black people who are not coons would agree with you. Do yourself, and us, a favor and :suicide:.

I think you’re correct, many are reading your thread wrong.

You did say “Your” favorites which doesn’t mean they’re the best. It just means they’re “Your” favorites.

It’s like making a thread about “Your” favorite restaurants and your favorite restaurant is McDonald’s. People could make suggestions about other restaurants but you just really like McDonald’s.

And if your favorite’s McDonald’s, then that’s your business so enjoy your McDonald’s.

Calm down, Hoss. I'm just fukkin wit you.

Fine, here are my top 4:

1. Eddie Murphy - Raw

2. Chris Rock - Bring the Pain

3. Kevin Hart - I'm a Grown Little Man

4. Louis CK - Chewed Up

I really wanted to put Pryor on this list, but his best specials just don't beat these 4, IMO. Pryor is still the GOAT, though. He was funny ALL THE TIME. Never had a bad night.

Oh really? Let's just see how many Board members agree with you. I'm predicting ZERO. :hmm:

It's my preference. Nobody has to agree with me, dumbass.

Appreciate the lists, fellas.

I'm gonna check out "I'm a Grown Little Man"-- I'm not a Hart fan but I've never watched a full hour of his and I've intended to for a while. (This is really a mining exercise for me-- It's one thing to know somebody thinks Kevin Hart is a top comedian, it's another to have the go-to special named.)

Like for instance, a lot of people say Bill Burr is funny, but I might end up watching his very worst special first. So "_______ by Bill Burr is one of the top 4 hours of comedy ever" is a lot more helpful than somebody just naming Bill Burr.

And the Mount Rushmore exercise is helpful because you actually have to be able to name 4 comedy specials, not just fart out the name of one you like.

Delirious was funnier than Raw. Bill Burr had some funny specials too.
not Kevin Hart

Shit man, I don't remember the names of his specials. Burr is a generally funny stand up comic, he does a lot of observational comedy and loves to deconstruct everything. I don't agree with all of his opinions, but he knows how to make things funny.

Try "Why Do I Do This". I don't know if its his funniest, but I remember it being hilarious.

It's a lot harder to think in terms of "best hours of comedy" as opposed to just naming your favorite comedian.

It's not popular here, but I really meant it when I said "Himself" was better than any of Pryor's specials. I think the opinion would be a lot more popular among people who have actually watched that incredible hour of comedy and don't just say "I like Richard Pryor better than Cliff Huxtable."

Many have to factor in the age of the person watching the comedy, it's a different time period now.

Throwing Eddie Murphy or Richard Pryor on now to a person who's never heard them won't make the same impression as those who were alive when it was released.

Well you needn't worry because not many, if any, will agree with you. I had thought maybe one or two of your friends might, but that presupposes that an arrogant pseudo know-it all like you would have any friends, which I seriously doubt. Sycophants maybe, friends? nah!
