What is meant is that white people today are expecting the same kind of reactions out of black people that their grandfathers and great-grandfathers got.
This is a different world. Our ancestors fought to protect themselves and that night or the following day or following weeks they were cut down and a hail of bullets or became Strange Fruit. This was to discourage black people from protecting themselves against white people in any way
