Was just seeing a segment on this like a week ago. It was crazy how much their production decreased and how the prices increased. Showed how certain restaurants basically rely on crawfish and how they literally have next to no biz cause lack of supply. In fact certain biz are still successful cause they do they own fishing for crawfish. Imma see if I can find that segment

I think that was partially true, they were over fishing to an extent. But I think the call out gave them a reason to increase prices. If you looked around stores still had snow crab & now it's almost like spots have too much & they are always on sale. Wegman's used to be expensive as hell for snow & king crab & now there prices are only slightly higher than other grocery stores. I know Giant in PA & DC has had them for $6.99-$8.99 lb for while on sale.

They are getting the snow crash from other places, but the place they normally be at has no snow crabs. I’m surprised those prices is that low.

Man I can remember in the 90s only folks in SE Texas and SW Louisiana ate crawfish. It was something special at a graduation etc type thing. I only ate them in Beaumont. 20+ years later its fucking crawfish restaurants out in the suburbs etc and everyone eating them on the weekends. Years later folks wanna be surprised at how high they have become. I remember when them joints would be like a 1.99 or 2.99 a pound. Americans just run a natural resource into the ground.

Sir, scientist has been preaching about this for a very long time. Now with the climate changing most natural resources is going away quicker than anticipated.

Wow. And to think in the 18th century lobster was considered poor people food. Used commonly to feed prisoners and as fertilizer. As well, up until the 1960's craw fish was considered poor people food. Nowadays, it's all been rebranded as fine cuisine by many. To me they will always be water roaches.

The 90s were 24 + yrs ago.. with that said the segment I posted said last yr crawfish was going for $2.75 a pound. So it was still cheap last yr. Problem is a huge drought due to weather so it’s an extreme lack of crawfish which cause the price to damn near jump 4 times the price this yr

Also, the other elephant in the room, especially in southern Louisiana is the saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico is starting to come up the Mississippi. This is going to really fuck up a lot of shit. Especially going to be bad this year because they really didn’t have ice and snow up in the great lakes and Northern part of the Mississippi river………This is going to be really problematic.

YES YES YES YES...I watch a youtube channel of guy who does catfishing. He fishing near New Orleans and that salt excursion was bad this past season. Dude was catching speckled trout, red fish, and black drum way up stream. It was cool for him to catch but that was dangerous for the citizens because he was saying his drinking water was turning salty. He actually was storing jugs of water to have fresh drinking water.

In 2023 articles were written about the price was up then too. It has been an issue and going up. Yes the 90s were 24+ years ago but I'm just saying back in the day eating crawfish wasn't a popular thing. It was a Louisiana type thing or us in SE Texas who had ties to Louisana. Now that shit is being sold in fucking central Texas like its water. Your price point of 2.75 is wrong or at least in my area.

Crawfish prices

People here in Texas are talking about 2.49 a pound back in 2012...Crawfish been high for awhile and only rising.

2012 price

For real. I'll eat most anything but I can never get it out my mind that shrimp/crawfish/lobster are roaches.

Very true.

New Orleanians can thank Al Scramuzza for bringing crawfish from rural Louisiana into New Orleans.

New Orleanians of a certain age will remember the Sea Food City commercials.

Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi recently declined millions for low income child care and free lunch for school. But turn around and ask for federal money for crawfish.
Hmmm comparing poor folks who hand is always out to folks who actually put money into the economy isn't the same thing.

Very good point
not really

there is a whole economy build around crawfish

from shipping, restaurants... processing... mom and pop fish markets... tourism

the shortage effects everything down there

the drought messed up the spawn...... no water so the adults just stayed in their holes..

the shortage has nothing to do with the crab boil craze

most of those crawfish are those restaurants outside of Louisiana are getting supplied from overseas

and most people around here don't even get crawfish in their crab boils

I am going to have to disagree with you, because that money they turned away from the government could have helped subsidize some of the losses. Also, the other elephant in the room is the salt water intrusion. They knew this was going to happen and it’s happening right now. They are going to beg the federal government for a lot of money because that’s going to be the bigger disaster.

Yes, I keep saying they need to be more terrified of the saltwater coming up the Mississippi.

Well you niggas need to go tell the cacs who voted for this idiot governor to focus on more important shit.

This is NOT Black folks concerned about this shit, yes I'd love a pound of crawfish but I'm not about to bitch about it, hurricane season is coming.

Yo, I’ve been beating people over the head from a long time about that bullshit. I say OK when the shit hit you in the ass I don’t wanna hear you crying about it. I told motherfuckers in Florida that with the insurance, bullshit and hurricanes and now that shit is eating them alive. Sometimes people have to learn the hard way.
