You know a film has reached a certain status when it's being lovingly referenced in a Cornetto Trilogy movie.

When Hot Fuzz's small-town policeman Danny Butterman opens his Grayskull-like vault of DVDs and holds aloft Point Break and Bad Boys 2, he's only got one question: "Which one do you want to watch first?"

Bad Boys was released in 1995 and its blockbuster sequel followed in 2003, with the action-packed buddy-cop movies notching up $622.1 million worldwide. Having returned a hefty profit on the $149 million combined budget (with the sequel costing almost seven times the original film's), surely a third film was inevitable?

It's not like everyone involved hasn't been trying. The on again/off again rollercoaster ride that is the Bad Boys 3 production schedule has seen its fair share of casualties along the way. Yet despite what Martin Lawrence said in 2017, Bad Boys 3 – AKA Bad Boys For Life – looks like it is now definitely happening...

Bad Boys 3 cast – has Will Smith signed on?
Lawrence has always been up for starring in a third film, even when it looked like Bad Boys for Life wasn't happening because of Will Smith's busy schedule, saying: "I'm there, I'm ready right now. If they wanted to do it, I'm ready, but I don't have control of that. That's the studio decision."

Similarly, Smith has always seemed happy to return to the franchise, if only he could find a gap in his workload.

Well it seems like he's found that gap as Variety reported on October 1, 2018 that Smith had signed on to reprise his role in the threequel as Detective Mike Lowrey, but Lawrence has yet to agree terms although we doubt he'd turn it down.

Bad Boys 3 writer and director – will Michael Bay return?
In 2013, writer David Guggenheim was lined up to work on the third film in the action franchise. The Safe House scriptwriter officially entered talks to tackle the screenplay for Bad Boys 3. "He's working on an outline right now. Hopefully we'll get him started on a screenplay shortly," Jerry Bruckheimer said six months later.

At that point, Bruckheimer was still producing the movie, but Michael Bay had not been expected to return to direct for a third time. Bruckheimer later admitted he did want Bay to return if that was possible.

The Grey director Joe Carnahan then became attached as a possible writer and director, working on the draft script from Guggenheim. Depending on who you believe, Carnahan suddenly quit over scheduling trouble or "creative differences" – and since he wrote the script as well, Sony was suddenly looking for a new director and possibly a new writer to rework the screenplay.

It didn't take Sony too long to find a writer – albeit unnamed at that point – as confirmed by Bruckheimer in late 2017: "We have a new writer on it who's working on it right now, so that gives me encouragement."

Since then, the news has been even more promising. The long-awaited third Bad Boys movie is seemingly back on track, with two new directors lined up. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have directed episodes of FX's Snowfall and are also attached to Beverly Hills Cop 4.

Bad Boys 3 release date
For a time, the long-awaited sequel was pencilled in for a February 17, 2017 release by Sony. Suggesting that timeframe was realistic, in October 2015 Smith said: "There is a very, very, very strong possibility that you will be seeing a Bad Boys film within the next 12 to 16 months."

A revised Bad Boys 3 release date saw the film set to hit cinemas on November 9, 2018 before it lost its release date again, at the point where Carnahan suddenly departed.

With El Arbi and Fallah now signed on to direct, Sony has confirmed a January 17, 2020release date for Bad Boys for Life, with Variety reporting that production on the movie could begin in early 2019.

Bad Boys 3 plot – who is the bad guy?
No plot details have officially been confirmed for the third movie, but one source suggests it will see Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) working as a private eye after falling out with his partner Mike Lowery (Smith). Lowery is apparently going through a midlife crisis as a bachelor who finally wants to mature, while dealing with a new, young, cocky-but-loyal partner (although that loyalty is not reciprocated). When Burnett returns to the fray, he finds a bond with the younger man.

The leaked plot details claim Lowery and Burnett are brought together once again when a skilled Albanian mercenary with a vendetta issues a death warrant against the pair in retaliation for the death of his brother. Now the two renegade cops must work together once more to bring him down.

Bad Boys 3 production – the long and winding road
A Bad Boys threequel has long been in development, ever since Smith called for a return back in 2008. Since then Lawrence has confirmed a number of times that he's keen for the project to move forward, providing regular updates that Bad Boys 3 was still on the cards.

In summer 2017, Lawrence reckoned the action threequel wasn't going to happen, especially since Smith was going to be busy with Aladdin. "I don't think we're going to get one, not the way everything's turning out," he admitted.

However, producer Bruckheimer confirmed later that year that Bad Boys 3 was still being developed: "Well, we've been developing it for I don't know how many years now, and we had a period of time where it got pretty close and then it drifted away a little bit, and hopefully it will drift back again," he explained.

With two new directors on board, a budget reportedly set at over $100 million and a proposed 2020 release date, it seems as if this pair's wild actions are finally making their way back onto our screens.

Bad Boys spinoff – Jessica Alba on the beat
While Bad Boys 3 was checking into development hell for a long stay, a separate but related project was quietly building. LA's Finest was a female take on the Bad Boys franchise starring Jessica Alba and Gabrielle Union.

Union was set to reprise her role as Special Agent Syd Burnett from 2003's Bad Boys II, having joined the LAPD in Los Angeles. There she is partnered with working mother Nancy McKenna (Alba), with their different lifestyles and approaches driving the action in the show.

The show was only at the pilot stage before NBC announced it would not be going ahead with the project. However, the show's producer, Sony Pictures TV, is reportedly in talks with Charter Communications to pick up the series. That would help boost Charter's number of scripted series.

Bad Boys 3 trailer
There's no trailer to speak of yet but if the first one doesn't feature car chases, explosions and Lowery and Burnett rubbing each other up the wrong way, we'll eat our hat (disclaimer: hat may be made of cake).

Going by the Jan 2020 release date, we'd estimate at least a teaser by July.

‘Bad Boys 3’ Coming Together as the Revival Plot Thickens at Sony (EXCLUSIVE)

By BRENT LANG and JUSTIN KROLL

Sony Pictures is close to greenlighting “Bad Boys For Life,” Variety has learned.

Reuniting Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as two of Miami PD’s most infamous officers has taken years to pull off, but a new draft of a script appears to have met with the producers’ approval and it looks as though production on the sequel could begin in early 2019. The plan is for the third “Bad Boys” to be in theaters by Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in 2020. Smith is on board to reprise his role as Detective Mike Lowrey. Lawrence has yet to come to terms, but the comic continues to circle the project.

Sony declined to comment on specifics related to negotiations or even address the possibility that the cameras will soon be rolling on another installment in the series. However, in an earlier interview the studio did speak to Variety more broadly about its vision for several key franchises.

“If we’re going to make another ‘Bad Boys’ after 15 years, it’s got to be next-level great,” said Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch.

Panitch’s team is keeping the details under wraps, but the studio believes that screenwriter Chris Bremner (“The Wedding Ringer”) has delivered the right mixture of action set pieces and laughs. Bremner is the latest writer to take a crack at the film — David Guggenheim and Joe Carnahan have also made attempts, with Carnahan on board to direct at one point. He’s now handed those duties off to Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who are best known for directing episodes of FX’s “Snowfall.” Michael Bay previously oversaw the Bad Boys franchise, but Panitch thinks the new team is the right fit.

“These guys are amazing,” he said. “They loved the first movies, but they’re not afraid to change things up.”

Panitch said making another “Bad Boys” would have been inconceivable without the key actors, but bringing back the original stars isn’t the only way that studio has been revitalizing older franchises. Sony’s problem is not unique. The studio is punching up against Disney, which boasts an arsenal of Marvel, Pixar, and LucasFilm that gives them control of series such as the Avengers, Toy Story, and Star Wars. It has fallen to Panitch and Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman to go through the cupboards and try to find ways to reintroduce franchises that in many cases are decades old. That can be difficult, since older properties can sometimes look dangerously out of touch.

One of their first experiments, the 2017 “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” was a major success. The decision to cast Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, as well as to inject video game elements into the picture, paid off with a $962 million gross. That’s a strong result considering that 20 years separated the film from the first “Jumanji.” Of course, not every franchise has benefited from a reboot. Sony’s attempts to reboot “Ghostbusters” with an all-female team of paranormal investigators failed to ignite, earning a disappointing $229 million on a $144 million budget.

Analysts say it can be difficult to find the right formula for revisiting older films or series. A successful reboot is equal parts inspiration and luck.

“There are certain benefits,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with ComScore. “There’s built-in recognition and affection for a brand and you know the premise has worked in the past. But it can’t seem exploitative or overly cute either.”

In the coming months, Sony will release reboots of its “Charlie’s Angels” and “Men in Black” franchises, and is hard at work developing a spin-off of “21 Jump Street” that will focus on female undercover cops.

“The north star for us is wanting our movies to feel different, not done before, not recycled,” said Panitch. “Because of the volume of streaming content out there and television content, we spend a lot of time around here talking about a movie’s theatricality and making sure we believe it achieves cinema worthiness.”

It has also meant embracing diverse casting. The upcoming “Men in Black” reboot finds Tessa Thompson cast opposite Chris Hemsworth. Likewise, the Elizabeth Banks-directed “Charlie’s Angels” reboot features Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska alongside Kristen Stewart. Banks’ “Charlie’s Angels” will inevitably lean into the female empowerment angle more than the McG-directed 2000 film (it’s unlikely a character will be introduced dancing in her underwear as Cameron Diaz did in that film).

“Elizabeth Banks is very clued in to what young girls and women are interested in,” said Panitch. “We live in a world where a woman is running the CIA. We didn’t want this to be an anachronism. Elizabeth wanted the mythology of Charlie’s Angels to evolve.”

One idea that has been abandoned is to have the “Men in Black” and “21 Jump Street” franchises overlap in some kind of mashup. That pitch from Chris Lord and Phil Miller is no longer on the front burner. Instead, Sony is focusing on finding the right female comedians to give send back to high school with badges. Rodney Rothman, the writer behind the first two “Jump Street” films, is writing the script and will direct.

“We think that there’s something fun about keeping that irreverent spirit of ‘Jump Street,’ but maybe having it be told through a female undercover cop point-of-view,” said Panitch. “We’ve had enough male buddy comedies. The script is really funny and has a freshness to it.”

To be fair, Sony isn’t just reviving old favorites. The studio is also trying to create new franchises, whether its last spring’s “Peter Rabbit” the low-budget thriller “Searching,” or the upcoming “Venom” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”

When it comes to raiding the vaults, Panitch and his team have tried to find one compelling idea that can justify dusting off aging series. In the case of “Charlie’s Angels” it’s giving it a grittier spin. With “21 Jump Street,” it’s leaning into a more feminist perspective. It’s unclear what the big idea is with “Bad Boys 3,” but Panitch says there will be one.

“With these movies you have to have one big idea for the film,” said Panitch. “In some ways, this big idea is ultimately more important than the brand itself.”

Michael Bay ain't directing?
I can't believe it, but I'm think I'm a little disappointed at that.
The man is bat shit crazy and probably a pyromaniac, but his directing style made those first two. Especially the second movie and that way over the top but still somehow fun highway scene.

They need to play it a little more realistic and with some humor and serious dramatic acting. I think it could work and it would reflect their age now

Long-awaited ‘Bad Boys’ 2nd sequel to shoot in Georgia

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are going to be in Atlanta soon to shoot at least part of “Bad Boys III,” which is currently titled “Bad Boys For Life.”
The movie is currently in pre-production, according to the Georgia film office. It’s set to shoot from November through February. Some reports say part of the film will be shot in Miami as well.

The original “Bad Boys” in 1995 was a hit, generating $65.8 million in domestic box office revenue. The sequel “Bad Boys II” in 2003 more than doubled that take, finishing at $138.6 million.

The sequel has been in the works for awhile. Sony announced two “Bad Boys” sequels in 2015 but there have been obvious delays. Michael Bay directed the first two.

He is horrible when it comes to atmospheric continuity. The angle of the sun and lighting are all over the place in his flicks. It is almost laughable because it changes drastically in the same scene. I am shocked that he hasn't been called out on this.

And the way that black actors (in his films) appear to be drenched with sweat in every scene when compared to their white counterparts is damn near criminal. They look like they have several layers of Vaseline applied to their skin.

F@ck him!

Curious to see what he will pull in today's climate of movies. Think it will do really well.

He's a much bigger star than what he was back then.
