Police knew that shit too. I would read their statements and you can tell they were even laughing at this shit and trying to keep a straight face.
Truthfully they were probably nervous as hell because if they called him on that shit too early everyone would have accused them of ignoring his assault since he's gay and black.
It had to be frustrating as hell for them to hold their tongue watching this play out knowing he was full of shit.

The ONLY way this works is if the brothers were out to get the little gay boy for some reason and he REALLY had NO idea when he got jumped and reported them. When the Police surprisingly tracked them down, they were probably shocked as hell and figured out an easy out for themselves... blame it on the little gay boy.
