Ruby Rose’s surprise exit from the CW series “Batwoman” stemmed from an ill fit between star and production.
According to multiple sources, Rose was unhappy with the long hours required of her as the series lead, which led to friction on the set. It was thus decided by her and the network and studio, Warner Bros. Television, that they would part ways.
Reps for Rose, Warner Bros., and The CW declined to comment.
Rose’s time on “Batwoman” marked the first TV starring role of her career. She previously appeared on Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” and has appeared in supporting roles in several films to date.
Given the sudden nature of it, speculation has been rampant as to the reason for Rose’s exit from the series. It was speculated that it had something to do with pain associated with an emergency surgery Rose underwent for two herniated discs,
but a source familiar with the situation tells Variety that Rose’s decision “had nothing to do with her health or injury.”
Rose has also been open about her mental health issues in the past. Back in October, she posted on Instagram “I’ve struggled with mental health my entire life.” She went on to say that she had attempted suicide multiple times and had been hospitalized at different times in her life.
In a statement issued announcing Rose’s departure, the studio, network, and Berlanti Productions said they would be seeking “a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”
“Batwoman” was renewed for a second season back in January. The show centers on Kate Kane, the cousin of Bruce Wayne and an out lesbian who assumes the titular mantle of Batwoman to protect Gotham City.

CW fans were stunned when it was announced this week that Ruby Rose would be leaving Batwoman, a big deal because…she’s the one playing Batwoman. The announcement came just after the season 1 finale with season 2 greenlit a long time ago, so why would she just walk away?
According to Variety, the reason is both simple, but somewhat confusing as well.
It was not due to health concerns (Rose recently suffered a severe back injury) or harassment (Rose was previously chased off Twitter for being a lesbian actress playing a lesbian superhero), but rather something a bit more basic.
Variety’s sources say that Ruby Rose was not thrilled with the long hours required as a series lead, which led to “friction on set.”
CW shows do run longer than most series these days (Batwoman season 1 was 20 episodes), and Batwoman specifically is a show that obviously shoots a lot at night, which can no doubt be disorienting.
And yet the counter to this is…I mean, you’re a lead in TV show, long hours are sort of how it goes. and she clearly wasn’t the only cast or crew member working this long. So it is possible perhaps there was more going on here, but this is the reason stated.
Rose’s departure is such a big deal for the show that Batwoman will have no other choice but to re-cast Kate Kane entirely instead of writing the character out. The showrunners have already said that like their first search, they will again look to cast an LGBTQ actress to play the LGBTQ role, something that they personally feel very strongly about. I have not heard any shortlists yet, but there are no doubt a lot of great known and unknown actresses to choose from who will kill for a rare superheroic part like this.
We simply almost never see recastings of leads like this outside of very, very extreme circumstances, like Spartacus’ Andy Whitfield being replaced after season 1 because he had to fight a cancer diagnosis (which he ultimately passed away from).
As for Rose, we don’t know anything about her future plans as of yet. Before this she showed up in several action films from John Wick to xXx, and originally burst on the scene with a role in Orange is the New Black. This whole situation still just seems very strange because she seemed so overjoyed to get the role of Batwoman back when she was first cast, but I guess playing the part in practice did not end up being something she enjoyed enough to work around the hours.
Batwoman, as a show, has been a bit hit or miss this first season, but I think it’s gotten better over time, and has featured some pretty stellar performances from main villain Alice, Rachel Skarsten, who is obviously staying. Not to speak ill of the departed, but Rose wasn’t…quite my favorite part of the series as Kate Kane, so I will be curious if the new actress brings a different energy to the role.
We will likely hear more about casting soon, so stay tuned for that.

Ruby Rose wanted off Batwoman — and no one was going to stand in her way.
Although the actress’ sudden, surprising departure from The CW superhero drama after just one season was framed on Tuesday as her choice and her choice alone, sources confirm to TVLine that the split was — at best — a mutual one.
“It wasn’t 100-percent her decision,” concedes a source close to the show. “It was a breakup. She wasn’t happy working on the show, and did that make her fun to work with? No. So everyone decided it would be in the best interests of the show, and for all concerned, if they parted ways. It just wasn’t a good fit.”
According to an insider, Rose — coming off the features John Wick: Chapter 2 and The Meg — was distressed by the long hours demanded of a lead TV role and did not acclimate well to life in Vancouver (where the show shoots). Batwoman marked the actress’ first full-time series gig, following her debut as the Scarlet Knight in the Arrowverse’s December 2018 “Elseworlds” crossover and a short arc on Orange Is the New Black.
In a joint statement released Tuesday, Berlanti Prods. and Warner Bros. Television confirmed that Rose’s iconic role would be recast — and with another LGBTQ actress. “[We] thank Ruby for her contributions to the success of our first season and wish her all the best,” the two companies said. “The studio and network are firmly committed to Batwoman’s second season and long-term future, and we — along with the show’s talented creative team — look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”
Batwoman Season 2, like many returning CW series, is not slated to premiere until January 2021.
Rose landed the role of Kate Kane/Batwoman in August 2018, following a brief search for an out LGBTQ actress to portray the famously gay vigilante. But within a week, Rose had shut off Comments on her Instagram after a wave of backlash.
“Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be batwoman’ come from — has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read,” she posted. “I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’ how do y’all flip it like that?” She added that the time since her casting had been a “rollercoaster,” and that she would take a break from Twitter to focus on work. “If you need me,” she signed off, “I’ll be on my Bat Phone.”
Last September, Rose shared (with a graphic video) that she had months prior undergone emergency surgery after herniating two discs while performing stunts on an unspecified project. She said the injury came close to severing her spinal cord, leaving her in “chronic pain.”
