The Biden administration announced on Friday it would automatically forgive $39 billion in student debt for 804,000 borrowers.
The relief is a result of fixes to the student loan system’s income-driven repayment plans. Under those repayment plans, borrowers get any remaining debt cancelled by the government after they have made payments for 20 years or 25 years, depending on when they borrowed, and their loan and plan type.

More from Your Money:

Here’s a look at more stories on how to manage, grow and protect your money for the years ahead.

In the past, payments that should have moved a borrower closer to being debt-free were not accounted for, according to the Biden administration.
“For far too long, borrowers fell through the cracks of a broken system that failed to keep accurate track of their progress towards forgiveness,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.
To bring people over the line for forgiveness, the Biden administration counted payments for borrowers who’d paused their payments in certain deferments and forbearances and those who’d made partial or late payments.
The announcement comes weeks after the Supreme Court struck down President Joe Biden’s sweeping student loan forgiveness plan, which would have delivered relief to about 37 million people.
The Education Department will notify eligible borrowers in the coming days.

It will take 48 hours for BGOL to discover the Republican AG’s asking corporations to knock off hiring non whites. And the Moderators are going to let “black posters” who will obfuscate the point and allow those ideas to develop root on the forum.

House Republicans seek 80% cut to federal program for students from low-income families
90

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives want to dramatically slash funding for Title I, the long-running federal program that sends money to schools based on the number of children from low-income families that they serve.

A bill advanced by a Republican-controlled House subcommittee on Friday seeks to cut Title I grants by 80% or nearly $15 billion.

BREAKING: Kari Lake has been ordered to pay $122,000 after a federal judge REJECTS her “frivolous” lawsuit trying to overturn the 2020 election. Oh it gets better: Not ONLY was Lake skewered for rejecting her loss to Katie Hobbs, but the judge also ordered fellow MAGA candidate Mark Finchem and lawyer Alan Dershowitz to pay penalties too. Lake filed multiple lawsuits seeking to overturn her defeat, including one listing Finchem as a co-plaintiff. Finchem, a member of the Oath Keepers extremist group, lost his race for Arizona Secretary of State, a position that would have given him power over the administration of elections in a key swing state. The federal judge skewered Lake, Finchem and Dershowitz for filing “false, misleading and unsupported” claims about the election in their lawsuit. Dershowitz tried to downplay his role in the litigation but the judge held him accountable. The 65 Project, an advocacy group behind efforts to discipline attorneys associated with attacks on elections, has filed a bar complaint against Dershowitz.
