You are right 100% but I also think the Ukrainians are playing a little game with this as well. They make legit plans to attack Moscow knowing that Europe/US won't agree. They actually want to and would attack Moscow but the compromise position is now gear/support way beyond what US/Europeans were willing to agree to initially.
Crimea is wild because we all know it is a target and we all know that losing that is not only a huge blow to Russian ego but potentially threatens Putin's grasp on things. The crazy thing is that the Russian plan for defending it seems stuck in the 1940s since they apparently still don't fully get the technology gap between them and NATO
