Unsure if the prosecutor offered a plea, but going to trial is risky even if you are confident in your victory... In my opinion, it likely is why the vast majority of cases don't make it to trial.
Too many variables that you don't control. Competency of your counsel, temperament of the judge, the jury, etc.. Regardless of your innocence, the prosecutors sole purpose is to convict you even if they have to make shit up or coerce people.
3rd degree assault is a low bar to meet. Despite the videos and evidence, he could have easily been found guilty by a jury if there is evidence of injury and it was just the two of them involved. I'm not surprised at the outcome and do not believe he is an abuser or should have lost out on all the opportunities he had.
Horrible situation this brother found himself in, and like others have said here, whether the woman is white, black, foreign.. whatever.. in my opinion, this can happen to any of us. If you think just picking the right woman is the solution, good luck, but it's not.
