For me the difference between Prince and MJ was that MJ belonged to the world. Prince belonged to black people. Hear me out.... as a teen MJ seemed to reach a global audience. He was played on all the pop radio stations and white folks loved him. PRINCE ON THE OTHER HAND...He was played in heavy rotation on the local black stations. At least in my city. He was the one who spoke to the funk. When he left the majors and had slave on his face it spoke to poor people. Poor black people. I know I may be reaching but truth be told, MJ was played on Z-93. Prince was played on WDAO. Those that are from my town know what I'm taking about.

it wasn't even that fully. not only did they NOT sell out. they actually OWNED. that's what did it. lots of artists don't sell out but in the end there's nothing they can do but be on the shelf and let their career die or keep working

prince was his own man. you can't do anything without his permission. and he didn't need them on top of needing his permission. the copyright act that expired giving him the rights back to his earliest works from when he was first signed just passed too.

mj not only owned his shit he owned all of their favorite artists shit too

aint no more to it.

As everyone mourns the loss of Prince, so too must the president of the United States. President Obama released a statement today on behalf of himself and his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama, saying that the world "lost a creative icon." Read the full statement below:

Today, the world lost a creative icon. Michelle and I join millions of fans from around the world in mourning the sudden death of Prince. Few artists have influenced the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly, or touched quite so many people with their talent. As one of the most gifted and prolific musicians of our time, Prince did it all. Funk. R&B. Rock and roll. He was a virtuoso instrumentalist, a brilliant bandleader, and an electrifying performer.
“A strong spirit transcends rules,” Prince once said — and nobody's spirit was stronger, bolder, or more creative. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his band, and all who loved him.

Prince Has the No. 1 Song and Album on iTunes Today

Just 45 minutes after news broke that Prince died on Thursday, he reached No. 1 on iTunes in the album and song categories. "Purple Rain" is currently the No. 1 song on iTunes, with "Little Red Corvette" at No. 2, "When Doves Cry" at No. 3, "Let's Go Crazy" at No. 5, and "I Would Die 4 U" at No. 10. His greatest hits album The Very Best of Prince is No. 1 on iTunes. That's just one of the many ways Prince is taking over iTunes. As of this writing, the soundtrack to Purple Rain, The Hits/The B-sides, and 1999 place second, third, and fourth on the top albums, with Sign O' the Times at No. 6. The video for "Black Sweat" is No. 2 in the music video category. The film Purple Rain is at No. 17 on the movies chart. Everyone in the world is probably playing Prince on their iTunes right now: blasting it in the office, listening to it on the subway, or having a goofy dance party in their rooms. It's a testament to how much his music moved people.

I'm damn near 40 myself. My parents right at 60...Prince was a well KNOWN artist but he wasn't necessarily the type of jernt to get no ack right at da neighborhood spades night if you catch my drift. Most folks assumed he was into men because of his image.

Man.. gtfoh.. nigga you wouldn't have left your bitch alone with Prince...and not a muthafucka you knew would either. People always thought dude was "weird".. never heard anyone calling him gay.

This may surprise a lot of folks but, most black folks born in the 50s (same age as Prince) were not IN to Prince's music.
Prince been looking bad for years...he knew he was on his last legs. Dude coulda had terminal cancer or some shit for all we know. But TPTB will slander him with the monster to tarnish his legacy.

Nigga what fucking planet are you from? Every muthafucka I know born in the 50s is sick over Prince's death and loved his music.

Most folks assumed he was into men because of his image. Y'all forget how severe homophobia was back then...granted, R&B groups started rocking eyeliner, makeup and soft curly hair by the mid-late 80s but...Prince was a trend-setter. He got the most shit for his look which took away from the impact of his sound, especially down South.

Aside from "Do Me Baby" his first singles didn't get as much attention as Rick James' singles. Purple Rain brought a lot of folks around...Kiss and 1999 brought even more conservative blacks around but by then he had changed his image and other artists were wearing makeup and heeled boots.

If you ask me, Michael bleached and started wearing eyeliner in 1986 to emulate Prince (light skin envy or self hate), not because he had no damned skin disease. All them Jacksons was some self-hating mofos.

Just my personal opinion. MJ could have just as easily wore brown makeup on his hands neck and face to even himself out. I also found it weird that MJ named both of his sons PRINCE...despite his claim that it was his grandfather's name or whatever.

MJ claims he rejected a Captain EO feature-length movie but, I don't think he could handle being compared to Purple Rain for his own musical film.

If I'm not mistaken, Prince said that "Bad" was supposed to be a duet with him and Michael. I would have loved to hear that.
