Debate: Damon Wayans Criticizes 'Dave Chappelle's Specials': "Are They Speeches Or Specials?" Too many specials?

He's only talking about the Duke Ellington SPEECH he gave. That wasn't a special, that was a speech he gave as they wanted to honor Dave by putting his name on a building. It's not his or Netflix fault that folks watch everything the man does.

In that speech Dave said respectfully he's the best of this generation. So you know a lot of his peers are going to get in their feelings.

I don't mind Dave's style because whether Damon think it's more of speech talk it's still very thought provoking & humorous at the same time. A lot comedians couldn't be successful with that style.

Dave could easily get back to the joking style like the Kevin Harts of the world and still run laps around them.

He’s not wrong
He is wrong....

That last SPECIAL...isn't a special at all....it's an acceptance speech where he was being honored....

The problem is most people are about as deep as a mud puddle and don't understand subtlety and nuance....

All they see is Dave talking about guys and trannys

It's not even about that....it's about being able to artistically express yourself without being canceled....it's about free speech....

We are our own worse enemies

To try to box Dave Chappelle in as just a comedian is disrespectful. Dave is a orator of the highest class.

He might be one of the few people who could make reading the phone not only funny, but also interesting a.f.

I don't get your reply cause you also call the Duke Ellington video a speech.

If a person doesn't think they're the best at something I ?uestion why you're in said profession! Damon Wayans should think he's the best comedian. Kevin Hart should think he's the best comedian... T.I. should think he's the best comedian!!!

Comedians are very fragile emotionally people so getting in their feelings is not an issue

Let Dave get it while the getting is good cause he realizes that they won't love him forever and when that day comes I believe he'll be at peace with it and his actions when it's all said and done.

Bingo.

See?

Now that's funny!!!

Why do we have to categorize and define why and what that is?

Damon hating.
He is. I think he and others took offense to Dave referring to himself as great and his special as better than anything else out during the "speech". Damon kinda alluded to this at the end by referencing his own work and comparative greatness.

Yeah I caught that.

Funny how sensitive comedians are.

Dave can have a lot os specials because he has a lot to say and he's able to turn it into jokes! Dave has the ability to look at a situation, break it down and see the absurd/funny in it like no other comedian has been able to do before. Instead of hating on him Damon should appreciate his art form. If you are not intelligent enough to see what Dave is doing you should just shut up so your ignorance won't be detected.

He's an artist, so take from it what you will and leave the rest. You're making up rules that I've never seen codified anywhere and stating them like they are scientific facts. Sure you can define a comedians role however you wish, but he isn’t bound to your personal definition of comedy. Even if we give you that arbitrary measuring tool if entertainment is the goal you fail your own logic by questioning Dave as an entertainer.
The receipts from his specials paint a distinct picture of an ultra successful entertainer, on both the right and left, almost inexplicably.
I did say IMO...never said its a rule that all need to go by.

But I used the sarah silverman example as a point about what people see as entertaining and humorous verses something thats not. Clearly the lgbt community doesn't find his latest stuff entertaining and they have as much right to push back on that as we do with black face. Do you agree with that?

I like Dave; but I liked the skinny funny as Hell Dave of 20 years ago a lot more. The older Dave has gotten a lot more preachy and philosophical.

Seems how he's handled all the respect and adulation he received for walking away from Chappelle Show and big bucks for artistic reasons has caused him to tailor his comedy in ways that come across as "I am now the shit" and you must rotf laughing.

In my opinion too often lately his act lately seems more like that of Lenny Bruce's than the Dave Chappelle I enjoyed so much. :hmm:

Always happens when you get huge the crabs come out

Usually that would fly but not from Damon Wayans

He's been in HUGE movies
Chappelle has had 1 iconic show which is wonderful
Wayans has 2 and quit a 3rd cause he ain't need to work on it anymore that was headed toward syndication.

He's incredible at stand up

so don't dismiss him as just a crab

He can have all that and still be a jealous crab. Doesn’t matter what he did before he ain’t got it like that anymore and probably thinks he deserves the same accolades as Chapelle. Mike Epps also dogged him saying he’s not from the streets so he should t be doing certain jokes. All these niggas are haters

That video’s actually 3 years old, they just retitled and posted it to look like it was recent for views.

These latest specials weren't joking joking joking.

Dave changed his energy though bro.

Sinbad is not Richard Pryor.
Seinfeld is not Chris Rock.
Bill Burr is not Patrice O'Neal.
George Carlin is not Redd Foxx.
Robin Williams is not Eddie Murphy.

These are all different comics with different styles and different energies.
Just let Dave, do Dave... :dunno:

Man, comedians hate on one another worse than rappers.
There is NO way that’s true. Comedians seem to be like boxers talking shit to each other. He’s an OG and long out of the game and has seen several iterations of comedy. It’s a critique and not an incorrect one. Some comedians can’t do a new special every year. I imagine it’s really hard to come up with new and killer shit. What’s funny varies. Most of Chappelles specials aren’t funny, just clever or bold. His last two weren’t funny at all. The Juicy Smollet and the Beyond Meat lines were hilarious. The rest was preachy and recycled.

Dave's body of work is what changed. Track his comedy and his speeches and you will see that in 4 years it's been more speech type of comedy and less laugh out loud jokes, so Damon is right. No harm, no foul.

George Carlin had 14 HBO specials.

Dave Chappelle has had four Netflix joints.....
My favorite two comedians right there and number 3 ain't no where close to those two. Carlin and Chapelle don't tell jokes, they see life in a unique way, and break it down into humorous observations.

In my opinion Damon didn’t need to give his opinion on his specials because it comes off as hating.

Actually it was hating, talking about him putting out so many specials and are they really “Special”!

Then told us to come see him perform to decide what greatness is.

That's valid.

I think Dave changed with the times. When Dave was skinny life was simpler. Between skinny Dave and the Dave we have now:

The Chappelle Show incident
Several incidents of police murdering black people
The rise of alt-right and Nazis
A select group of white men switching to trans women to keep being racist but still act like the oppressed group and how they control the narrative
Trump as president and all the shit he brought with it
Global pandemic
Probably a few others I'm missing

He's always been critiquing the culture in his stand up but it's been a lot more serious to him and many others

Yep. Chappelle transcended from comedian to social commentator with a sense of humor years ago.

I brought up Carlin because his social commentary was something masses enjoyed and I can't recall anyone complaining about "another!" Carlin special on HBO.

I miss Carlin's specials and hope Dave can make as many as Carlin did, whether it is with Netflix or HBO or whomever.

Damon Wayans needs to shut the fuck up.

Do you laugh at his shows or not is the determining factor of whether its comedy or not.

Using this metric George Carlin wasn't doing comedy.

No, not even close. It's like you're comparing a group of construction worker's cat calling to a group of robed klansmen performing a lynching.
