On the real, this is a thread about old mofos who don't want to look at themselves as old so they blame the previous generations for looking old. Just ask a 20 year old, do you look old?

Let's be real, folks....
I look very young for my age, to the point where people think I am lying.

Everybody isn't lucky as you, bruh. People out here fighting gray hairs, diabetes, high blood pressure, and knee problems.
You're right, when I first got diagnosed with high blood pressure I change my diet and started working out hard and it helped a lot because I no longer drink or smoke, the worst I do is eat edibles. But like some have pointed out, we take care of ourselves better of ourselves today, and another factor that we overlook is that we have better cameras with much softer diffused lights, to combat those harsh high contrast shadows that can make you look older.

I finally got my diabetes under control without any meds, like you I watch my diet. It's all about being mindful of what you put in your body. I treat my body like an exclusive night club and my mouth is the entrance, you can't let any food into the club....., you gotta turn half the folks away. So, the quality the food is important, not any junk on a regular basis.

If this was the 1912's they may have given you a pack of Lucky smokes, a swag of gin, and some opium laced with coke cola with real coke, and three years later you'd be wondering why you look a hundred years old.

Went to the court about 2 weeks ago. Youngins was calling me "unc"... that's when I knew that I probably look older than what I think lol

"Unc" was all this Columbia Dude and this Sista who used to work at my gig called Me.
They were like I was like this Cool and Eccentric Uncle who does his own thing.

But folks never believe Me when I tell them I'm (now) 59.
Co-Workers and Customers tell me I look like I'm in my 30s.
I tell them I've kept My youthful looks at the expense of My sanity.
Or if I want to be a real Asshole and make some Social/Political/Racial comment.
That dealing with Racism has kept Me young all these decades.

But I will say that way too many Black folks, especially Black Women are looking really older than they are today more than ever.
Too many young girls out here with sagging bodies and old-looking faces.
And they're not even 30.
Peeps just don't care about body maintenance these days.

And it's more about the people posted here looked more "Adult" than "Old".
There's a difference.
But that's always been an issue for Black Folks.
Especially Black Men.
When one considers our age/look dilemma.
A society that initially treated Black Men as Children ("Boy", etc)
But then sees US as Adults when it comes to Crime and Police Brutality.

Shit, when I was 5, my grandparents all looked old, and not just in that everybody is old to a little kid way. They looked old, dressed old, etc. This was when they were in their early 60's.

For women that old hair dye was part of it, giving that blue tint. For men, back then when you started losing hair, you for the most part went George Jefferson/Maurice White instead of cutting it off.....that didn't help. Also I think diet and SMOKING played a part. Smoking was a whole lot more popular for people who were born like, pre-Korean war. Mufuckas chain smoking with no filters.

I was at the gym the other day and was having a convo with one of the female trainers...young chick..mid 20's
I mentioned in our conversation about doing something in when I was in my 20's...
she stopped and was like "you ARE in your 20's tho!" I was like nah....and then she started guessing....32? 35?...
I finally told her I was turning 45
Her knees buckled and she grabbed my arm and just blurted out..."my god you're so fucking hot" lol
Nobody believes me when they hear my age.
Been lifting weights religiously since my teens....keeping active watching my diet, no smoking, rarely drink. meditate, hydrate...try to keep my body in an alkaline state
It's true that if you take care of your body for the first 50 years.....it will take care of YOU for the next 50 years.

I know this is a small and hand-picked sample, but what do you guys think?

I think no. There's not much if any difference between then and now. In the video, the reason the high school kids looked older is because the styles of hair and clothes that was popular then is what you see people's grandparents wearing now. The same with many pics of adults. Seeing them in old fashioned looking clothes in black and white can trick us into viewing people as older compared to how our 2022 brains see the people of today. Thank you though for an interesting topic.

Many of the sample picture you provided when you made your comparisons aren't balanced. You did acknowledge that yours was kind of a small handpicked sample. But in a lot of cases you hand-picked very dissimilar pairings. With more balanced pairings, the line blurs regarding how people of a long ago era look compared to people of the present era.

instead of comparing Gucci Man at 42 with Dr. King at 39, Compare Cab Calloway at the same age as Gucci

Comparing LaWanda Page, a very plain looking woman of that time who's dressed up like an old church lady with a glammed up nice looking Mary J. Blige? C'mon bro. how about this instead:

Mary J Blige at 51

You compared Roman Reigns with Sherman Hensley, who like John Amos was balding and had makeup people add grey to his hair to make him look older so he could play a character who has a grown son? How about this instead:

The Lebron vs Hank Aaron comparison? How about this one instead? They pretty much look around the same age to me.

You compared Jean Stapleton, a singularly unattractive white woman pictured played an older working class dowdy housewife with a professional portrait of Mariah Carey, a beautiful, glamorous sista. That feels unbalanced. How about comparing hers with a professional picture of another beautiful glamorous sista who was the same age in her photo?

Everyone knows Elvis at 42 was about to die from fucking his body up from his drug addiction and overeating unhealthy shit to the point of obesity and health problems, compared to a 49 year old healthy Eminem (who is likely dying his hair and beard brown being that he's in his 50s).

How about instead, a comparison with a 51 year old of days past?

The flaw in these comparisons are some photos are people in character vs actual individuals not a fair comparison. also
we're using our 2023 lens to judge individuals who in those time were probally considered looking young and fresh to their peers.
